CVA Wolf
#1
I'm looking for information, good or bad, on the new CVA Wolf break open 50 cal. rifle. I won one of them in a raffle last weekend and just picked it up today. It looks pretty cheap in some respectsand it's barrel is made in Spain. The manual claims it can handle 150 grains of powder but I know my shoulder can't especially as light as this rifle is. The manual also warns about using bullets weighing over 300 grains, too. It claims that this rifle is actually made with the powerbelt bullets in mind and highly recommends them. Does CVA have some connection with powerbelt bullets? The rifle swings up well and feels pretty well balanced. The accessories that came with it; scope, scope mounts, scope rings, and sling are probably worth more than the actual rifle would cost. I could only find two reviews on it on another site andboth were positive about it's accuracy.

My understanding is it is their entry level break open. If you get it in a New Frontier Brand it is called a Beartooth Magnum. If the Spanish barrel issue does not bother you, it is a entry level rifle at best. I personally would not buy one, but many of them are sold. Just read the manual and do not exceed any of the loads.
I had a chance to help a person sight a Beartooth in and 85 grains of Triple Se7en and a 245 grain Aero Tip Power Belt did real well. The kid even stopped a deer in its tracks at 30 yards with the set up as I finally found out first hand. He said it came walking down the trail and he said (he's 15 years old) I was shaking so badI could not get a bead on it. Finally the doe stopped and he calmed himself. He said he never even knew he fired it until the rifle belched and the deer was on the ground right now.
They will kill deer and are fine for most ranges we encounter. Good luck with the rifle.

I don't have any actually experience with the wolf but I do have the same instruction manual here. The manual actually only says not to use a saboted bullet weighing more than 300 grains, they don't provide any information as to what the max conical bullet weight or powerbelt weight is. And yes, BPI (the owner of the CVA brand) also owns Powerbelt bullets.

I SHOOT THE BEARTOOTH MAGNUM IN 45CAL. THIS
IS THE SECOND YEAR USING IT. SO FAR I'VE TAKEN
1-TURKEY AND THREE DEER WITH IT. I SHOOT THE
225GR. POWERBELT AERO-TIP OVER 2-50GR. 777
PELLETS & THE NEW REM.KLEENBORE PRIMERS. I
AM NOW TESTING THE 245GR. HOLLOW POINT
POWERBELTS TO USE THIS SPRING ON A WILD HOG
HUNT. BASICALLY YOU WILL HEAR GOOD AND BAD
ABOUT THESE ML BUT THEY WILL SHOOT POWERBELTS
WITH DEADLY ACCURACY. I HUNT MOSTLY RIVER
BOTTOM LAND HEAVY FOLLIAGE SO THE LIGHT
WEIGHT FLAT SHOOTING 45CAL WORKS FOR ME.
GOOD LUCK WITH WHAT EVER CHOICE YOU MAKE.

I picked one up last Summer at Cabelas. I'm new to ML and didn't want to sink a bunch of money into the sport before deciding whether I liked it or not. Anyway, I shoot 80gr. of Pyrodex RS w/ 240gr. Cheap shot or 240 XTP sabots. I feel comfortable with it out to about 125 yds. Most shots would be less than 75. It's light and easy to tote. For what it is it's not a bad gun. My son will probably inherit it in a few years and I'll have to upgrade ;-).
By the way I've been lurking for the last 6 months on the site and have found a huge amount of helpful information. Thanks to all the frequent posters.

Thanks fella's. I think I'll keep the rifle and give it a shot, no pun intended. Eladamri is right with CVA and Power Belt bullets being the same company. I just saw a packaged deal at Dicks Sporting Goods where a CVA Wolf was packaged with the 295 grain Power Belt hollow point bullets. I think I'm gonna try the hollow point 245 Power Belt's that I currently am shooting from my Ruger 77/50 muzzleloader. Don't really need the extra 50 grains for Virginia deer.
Again, thanks to all the replies.
