Tuesday I spent most of the day at the range tuning up and sighting in several rifles. I have replaced the rear sights on my two Bobcats with Marbles adjustable sights and am in the process of getting use to them and getting them sighted in. The first thing I have discovered is that they are taller than I thought, thus making the POI higher than expected even at the lowest elevation. I made a few adjustments to the way I was aiming, like a slightly low 6 o'clock hold and was able to get 2 out of 3 shots on target and many times touching at 50 yards. Not too bad, so I guess I need to get a slightly taller front sight to get some consistency.
I also roughed in my inline with a load of 80gr of 777 and a 250 ShockWave for my 12 year old to use on an upcoming deer hunt. I have it sighted in for 2" high at 100 and shooting groups of around an inch or less. This should work well for him without hurting his shoulder. I also tried some PRB inthe inline. This is the first time I have tried them in it and was suprised at how well they worked after switching from .015 to .018 patches. I started at 60gr of 777 and it hit close topoint ofaim but grouped about 4 to 5 inches at 50 yards. I moved up to 70gr and everything tightened up nicely. I was getting groups around an inch and they were printing within a half inch of where the 250 SW's were at 50 yards. I tried a few shots at 100 yards and the first one printed right next to the 250's group, I thought, wow, this could be interesting. Unfortunately, the next two spread out to about a 5 inch group. It could still kill a deer but it was not as tight as I had hoped. I'll have to try it again to confirm theresults as the wind was starting to pick up when I shot the group so it may have had an impact on it.
All in all, it was afun day of shooting and I got several things accomplished that I needed to do. I still have some work to do on the sidelocks but the other guns going on the hunt are working well and will be ready for final sight in when we get to our destination.
