Default First deer with black powder.

I took my first deer with a black powder rifle lateFriday evening 10/14/05.

A small doe ( or so I thought ) came out to the bean field about 40 to 50 yards from my stand. I lifted my new omega loaded with a 250 gr Shockwave in front of two fifty gr pyrodex pellets. I put the crosshairs high on its shoulder and squeezed the trigger. Just as I shot; the deer leaned forward to sniff the ground. The bullet severed the backbonea little further back. As soon as I gathered my composure, I got down and finished the deer off in the head. It turned out to be a button buck; which dissapointed me, but there was nothing I could do.

I am pleased; nonetehless, to have shot my first deer with my new omega. The exit wound the .50 cal made was awesome. I am probably going to take it out again before the season over after I take a few with my 270 WSM.

Thanks to everyone who answered the questions I had buying and getting started with black powder hunting.

Congratulations on bagging your first muzzle loading deer. Those rifles do indeed put a world of hurt on a deer that is for sure. It is so hard to tell the difference between a button buck and a doe. I've made the same mistake myself more then once I might add.

They are both great eating and that is the main part.

Congrats. Success with a front-stuffer is something that not every hunter can pull off. Your attention to detail as you experimented with different loads before the season opened, learned the tricks of BP cleanup and proper care have served to add to the success of your first BP kill. Just about anyone can chamber a .308 and take a 250 yard shot at a deer and be successful...eventually anyway.

As for taking a button buck. Look, you did your best to identify the target and make a clean kill. When the latter didn't go exactly according to plan, you did your best to quickly take care of the animal. Every hunter has to make a finishing shot sometime in their career. Bottom line, now you have meat in the freezer. Yeah, you did ok in my book

Congrats again. Hope you took plenty of pictures with your first ML trophy!

hay bagman.... that's worth one at-ta-boy. no matter how many deer you get with your M/L it always seems neat to find something laying there after the smoke clears.

Kudos on your first deer. The more I see and hear about those 250 Shockwaves, the better I like them.

Your first deer with a ML, always going to remember that one.

I too have shot button bucks before, thinking they were adoe.
Everyone probably has.
I don't like shooting buttons but they do taste great.

You owe nobody an apology for the button buck. Only those who complain about not seeing any nice bucks should feelshame for taking a button. They are legal, and they taste good too.
Make good use of him.
