Homemade sub-bases...you guys ever try this?

your picture posting is not going so well. If you upload the picture to a photo web server like Http://www.Photobucket.Comand then take the Http address and put that in the photo image link it tends to work for me...
I'd like to see this picture myself... greed or selfishness... you call it

Cayugad,
I don''t know what was going on but "yes" Iam having problems and it's frustrating when you don't know what's causing it.
Anyway I was able to post a pic a lil bit ago, and I didn't do anything different.....go fugure.
Anyway here's the pic of cutting the Winchester AA's w/cigar cutter. Or at least I hope this works....I'm gun shy now!

Excellent... Thanks. It came through nice and clear. And that fits nice and snug in a .50 caliber... I guess I have to get a few of them too and give that a try with some different things.

I have a couple packs of the MMP Sub bases on their way to my house right now, so I thank you for the offer but will try them first. Also I have a friend who is a trap shooter and reloads a lot. I think he shoots a 28 gauge for dove and pigeon hunting, so he would have some I could get.... thanks again.

Hey Encoreman - Ever try cutting the wad just ABOVE the cushion section of the wad instead of below it as pictured? To put it differently, simply cutting off the petals of the shot cup at the cup base. Wondering if the cushion section of the wad would improve ML conical performance. Just a thought.
Also, I'm assuming that the pastic of the 28 guage wad is softer than the plastic of a high performance ML sabot since (on average) shotguns operate at a little lower velocity than MLs. Right? Then it would seem likely that the 28 guage wad base would expand more and engage the barrel rifling more than the sabot. Right? Have you ever recovered any of the 28 guage wad bases to determine how much they're engaging the rifling?
It would seem likely that the more the wad base (or sabot) expands and engages the rifling, the less gases would cut past the projectile upon firing, and hence the more accurate the projectile would be. Without ever testing this concept, what do ya think?
Just thinking of the MMP picture of their spent bases in the link I posted awhile back. In particular, I was very impressed with the expansion and depth of rifling marks and was wondering if the 28 wads would behave similarly.
I gotta try this out before archery season kicks in shortly.

Hunter John,
To tell you the truth, I've done very little experimenting with the AA sub bases. It's been awhile since Ishot these but what little I did use them, my accuracyseemed toimprove some. I looked to see if I documented any of my results and I can not find anything. I must not have been in a serious mood when Idid this, because I usually keep good records.
I'm starting to drift back to shooting my 50cal. guns again and if the weather straightens out this weekend, maybe I can give it another try.
I never gave it a thoughtto cut the petals off above the wad cushion
I read about using the AA wads on Toby Bridges web site @hpmuzzleloading .com He had a picture of the wad after the petals were removed and the cushion was not attached.
Archery season starts Oct. 1st in Illinois and I know where I'll be after that.Keep us posted on your findings.

Encoreman - Thanks so much for responding.
Archery season opens Oct 15 here in NYS so I will have very little time to experiment with some of the loads we'ver been kickin' around on this sight lately. However, the 28 guage wad thing is definitely something I want to try.
Best of luck to you during the upcoming archery season. You folks have some big ones in Illinois I hear...to put it mildly!
