Geez I have seen moose shot with 270 and up, unless you use a rapid expansion bullet or hit heavy bone the damage is not great! I'd stick to the 180's you have worked out now and put in the bread basket...only loss will be a little bit of intercostal rib/flank meat which amounts to little less ground but nothing worth worrying about!

I'm guessing they are only going to be about 300 lbs so I'd never go with anything smaller than a .300 just because of potential bear encounters.

a calf should weighs around 150- 170 lbs or so, at least the one i got did.

We are talking a calf moose right! B/C 150-170 lbs calf would be extremely small - unless your talking fully dressed hang weight(hide off, etc)!

yeah thats what i meant after it is dressed, sorry i didnt clarify that, but i still dont think a calf would weigh 300 lbs, cause the 2 point bull i got this year weighed 330 lbs after it was dressed and hanging.

Once you add guts, hide, legs and head a calf will be 300lbs(plus) on the hoof.

My bull last fall was in the 500 lbs range (hanging weight) and he was not the biggest in the forest either. They are 1000lbs animals when mature on the hoof, so calves weighing 300 would be not out of the norm.

I thought BC had the bigger species of canadian moose...LOL!
