RE: Min caliber for Elk?
As always, great advice! Thanks for the tips and the renewed confidence in my 270. I was seriously considering buying or borrowing another higher caliber gun but It sounds like my little ol 270 will do the job.... I'll also take the suggestion and use the Nosler Partition's and leave my tree stand in the shed.
Thanks guys!
Kenny.

On Remington's website, the 150 grain nosler partition comes out at 2850 fps and has 1734 ft/lbs at 300 yards. Close enough to your figures. I would agree that you could go out to 300 yards, but would still only take the shot if conditions were right.

I have seen people do well with the 270 but I on the other hand have had too many long tracking incidents. So I went out and got the 30-06 and I have not had a problem since.

I totally agree that the .270 is more than enough for even big elk. I have used the .270 on elk since I started hunting elk and it has worked everytime. One large cow had a 140gr failsafe go through her right shoulder and exit right behind her ribs on the other side. Federal loads a 140gr. trophy bonded bear claw at 3100fps. and it's endorsed by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. If it's good enough for them then it's good enough for me.

Just curious bigbulls: did the bullet just go through shoulder muscles or did it break some bones when it went through the near shoulder? I have always just worried about my bullet striking the big bone of the shoulder and not penetrating much farther.

txhunter58. The bullet caught the front half of her shoulder bone and broke it and continued through the right front and left rear of both of her lungs and exited the other side. She didn't walk 6 feet from where she was standing when the bullet hit her. The failsafe is an awesome bullet but I am giving the Federal high energy TBBC 140gr. a try this year just because they are about 200fps faster than the failsafes and who knows I jsut might need that little bit of extra range.
