I'm going on a elk hunt in 05. I'm planning on using my Win. Model 70, in 30/06. I've been developing a load for the hunt using a 180 gr. Nosler Partition. Accuracy has been decent, averaging a tad over 1". Velocity is around 2750 fps.
I have a lot of confidence in the Partition bullet.

180 gr. Nosler partitions are excellent slugs. We've killed elk, deer, grizzly and black bear, moose, caribou, and mountain goats... all with the same load. They dropped the bear and the moose like a ton of bricks.

Don't overlook the Barnes Triple Shock either, that bullet holds together very well. Four nice little petals. I had a friend shoot a 160 grainer out of his 7 mag at a 1/2 inch steel gong, and when we found the bullet, the thing was 158.5 grains, all the way through. The Nosler will do well also.

My husband used the exact bullet you described to take down a 280 class 6x6 on his 1st ever elk hunting trip this past fall. SO, my "unbiased"
opinion would be that it seems to be a decent choice.
