I shot a cow square in the front quarter from about 75 yards with a Barnes. Not the best shot I could have made but she wasnt exactly standing still for me. She only made it about 50 yards but I could not find a blood trail leading up to her. The front quarter was completely destroyed, no muscle worth saving. A friend on the same hunt used the same bullet (heavier grain) out of his '06 on a cow at 250 yards. He had the same complaint about no blood trail. He had a good lung shot and she still went a couple hundred yards through some nasty blow downs. Lack of snow made the tracking tough but I was expecting a better blood trail. This was about 7 years ago and I havent tried a Barnes since.

Fawn,
I have killed only one elk with a Barnes. I didn't think about it at the time, but I don't remember a blood trail also. It traveled about fory yards and went down. I knew it went down, because I saw it. But it still took ten to fifteen minutes to find it. In fact I practacally fell over it. Everything was covered with frost, including the elk. It was great camo.
