Important to note that the first year was a real eye opener for a lot of reasons. We were 3 good seasoned deer hunters from the east and with no experience with hunting elk. It was actually kind of funny when we started to scout because none of us knew what to expect. We heard bugling and saw some elk. We tried out the calls and saw that it wasn't rocket science...just hunting. We adapted both physically and mentally. The hunt was far harder that what we were used to due to the altitude. I live at 118 ft above sea level and getting acclimated over a short time to hunting at 10,000+ feet was tough. We all scored as Rob said with 2 cows and a nice bull. We hunted the next 4 years with almost as good averages as the 100% first year. Getting back to the whole point of the post….I go for the hunt not the kill. If I get to hunt and not kill it is still one of the best times of my life. When I score….it is better than best. Personally I have taken 4 elk in 5 years. If I am lucky enough to hunt another few years and never take another animal….I still am way ahead.

Yeah, you guys are above average. You don't do that without good instincts. I don't need to wish you good luck next year. You don't need it.
I'm a meat hunter. By hunting season i'm out of meat, and my dog is looking at me funny. He loves elk. So, I work hard to fill the freezer. So far, me and the pooch haven't gone hungry.

We can always use good luck. Nothing wrong with being a meat hunter. I do it all the time. Nothing is better than elk meat. Although the 2 muleys Rob and his daughter took last year are pretty tastey. Especially hers since it was way bigger than the old man's

and the other numbers are low as far as #'s of meat per animal. I shot a yearling last year and got 120# and that is only due to some waste being in a hurry.
All of my buddies from TX would be HAPPY to pay the $354 to get any elk. Why all the griping?
