Cop pulls a hunter over for speeding:
" Good morning, sir. In a bit of a hurry?"

" Sorry officer, you should know there' s a weapon on my back seat."

Alternative:

" Sorry officer, you should know my hunting rifle is on the back seat."

If I' m this guy' s partner riding in the back seat, I hope he uses the 2nd declaration.

You know BJ to me you just said the same the thing twice in my opinion, don' t really see a difference. But even though I don' t agree with ya, I think your heart is in the right place and I commend you. We need more hunters who care about the big picture.

If I was the cop The word " weapon" does not tell me what is back there and it could be anything from a knife to a bomb. If the guy tells me that his hunting rifle is on the back seat, that tells me that this guy is on hes way home from hunting and most likley isn' t a threat.

I had a cop pull me over coming back from phesant hunting one night I told him I was phesant hunting and I had my shotgun behind my seat. He didn' t even have me get out of the truck. He only asked if it was unloaded. Had I told him I had a weapon behind the seat he probably would have wanted to see it or at least had a few more questions for me.

I' ve gotten pulled over several times with guns in my truck. I' ve always just said, " I need to tell you that I have three guns in my truck. A shotgun, a rifle, and a pistol." I' ve never once even had a cop ask to see them. I think as long as you tell them right from the beginning, the officers here don' t have any problem with it.

I' m sure a lot of has to do with where you live or are at the time and the individual person you are talking to. We don' t know what a person may be like on our first meeting with them. So what you say can have a lot to do with how they perceive you as a person.

LOL! Once for tinted windows (have had the same ones for at least five years, but it was a new cop and I think he was a little over-zealous, the windows are fine), and twice in one night for a faulty tail light. One stopped me going into Sweet Home on my way up into the mountains, the other got me heading out the other end of town. They thought it was funny. They said that' s what I get for driving through a dinky town on a Friday night with a good reason to stop me.
I spend alot of time up in the hills, so I' ve also been stopped alot by ODFW, but that' s never been a problem either. I live in a community that is very hunting-oriented, so I think most officers know odds are there' s a good chance if it' s a truck, there' ll probably be at least one gun!

Also, just to clarify my first post in this thread, I wasn' t talking about violence in relation to my hunting itself. I meant more that I am not a very big girl, usually hunt by myself, in some pretty remote areas, and always try to keep in mind the dangers that are there. Nature can be a violent place at times, and I try to stay aware of my surroundings at all times. I think that may have been taken wrong and I am sorry for not being more clear.

i was pulled over earlier this year for expired tags, and the 1st thing out of the lady officers mouth was " DO YOU HAVE ANY WEAPONS" . i told her just my tools,,,, but i carry my lock blade which is also my hunting knife. BUT I DIDN' T TELL HER THAT...

Don' t know that this contributes much to the debate, but down here we have GUN laws, no such thing as Weapon laws or specifically Rifle laws.
The licence I have in my wallet is a FIREARMS Licence, and it' s issued under the ARMS Act.
So guess there' s plenty of things you can call your shootin stick.
Which one is negative, is probably in the ears of the beholder.
Calling guns weapons is damn rare round here, usually the only time you hear them called that is on American cop movies..." Put down yaaw weapon" ...
For me personally it' s got a bit of a bureaucratic conotation..Armed Forces, Police etc.
I never call my gun a weapon, even though I have been in some hunting situations of self defence.
Maybe there' s an analogy with a tennis player calling his tennis racket a weapon, or a baseball player.

Not that this would ever happen, but if this world had never had a war, and people didn' t go around stabbing, beating, shooting each other the word " weapon" woouldn' t even exist.
