I' ll be huntin' Blackies here in northern B.C. in about 2 weeks and will be useing my Marlin 1895G in .45-70 stoked with 350gr Hornady FN and enough Re7 to spit ' em out at 1900fps. Bears go down FAST when hit hard with that combo! If I was thinking of over 200yrd shots, then it' s my Win. M70 7mm Rem Mag with 160 gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claws at about 3100fps. Take your time and place your shot to take out the boiler room and that bear is yours. Good hunting to you!

Sounds like you will hunting on a bait stand. If that' s the case then I suggest you use a big-bore 45/70 , 450 Marlin or a 444 Marlin. Also use a good scope because the best bear seem to come in--- right at dark. I used a 30/06 with 180 grain bullet on my bear hunts here in Colorado, back when it was legal to bait. To be honest any deer cartridge will work, 300 savage, 35 remington, 270, 280 etc. I don' t think I would use a 243/ 6mm.
You want to anchor the bear on the spot if possible. Break the shoulders and tear up the heart/lungs. It' s been my exiperence that the bear will bleed only a short distance then stop. I think the hair mats up & acts like a blotter. Its no fun looking for a wounded bear.
