Curious which 30-30 you got? Win. or Marlin?
Look at it this way:
Handgun hunting is very popular and legal in most western states. (Elk country). And the .44 mag is probably the most popular caliber.
So to compare the .44 mag to the 30-30's energy in foot pounds at 100 yards, the 30-30 still has at least double the knock down energy as does the .44 mag. So is the handgun too small? I think not.
According tho the Federal balistics chart . . .
i.e.; 30-30 / 150gr / @ 100 yds: 1358 ft. lb's.
" " / 170gr / @ 100 yds: 1355 ft. lb's.
.44 mag / 180 gr / @100 yds: 485 ft lb's!
" / 240 gr / @ 100 yds: 713 ft. lb's!
Considerably less, and yet very deadly.
Go with the Hornady LEVERevolution in 160 gr. Very nice groupings.
And as always . . . practice, practice, practice.

The underpowered 30-30 strikes again.

I got a Winchester Model 94, it was made in 1968 and it is the Buffalo Bill Commeritive Edition. It's a very nice piece and I'm glad to have it. If I was deer huntingback at home(Texas) I wouldn't even think twice about using it, I used one all my life growing up. I just thought it would be cool to try and take an elk with it. I bought some 170 grain Remingtons I'm going to try and shoot it this weekend. Thanks for all the responses. Bryan

What I find interesting is many say the .243 is too small for elk. Yet the .243 delivers more energy than a .30-30. So if you're saying the .30-30 is ok for elk, you're saying the .243 is as well.

Can they kill and elk.... sure. But they deserve more respect and a larger caliber. I'd start at a .270. But the .300 WSM is my choice for elk.

How are you going to send 170 grains of lead down range with a .243? I'm not knocking the .243, I have a Rem BDL and love it. It's just that your statement makes no sense at all.

They deserve more respect???If you think they deserve more respect, drop the 300 WSM and pick up a bow. The 30-30 is an awesome gun, I love shooting them and if you're accurate with it there is no reason why you can't hunt elk with it. Hell I'd hunt elk with my 243, I'd limit my range but I could easily punch a hole in the heart with it.

I think that a 30/30 would do fine on elk if you keep in mind the limitations of the rifle. The 30/30 has taken more game than any other rifle in the world.

In this day and age, there are many "better" cartridges than the .30-30, BUT, stop for a minute and think of how many tens of thousands of elk have been killed with the 30-30. It is fine as long as you use it within it's limitations.
