As a couple of others said, with the right shot placement it will work on most of those species. None of those animals are considered "thick skinned" so you should be able to do it just fine. That being said, I would use a .338 or a .375 on a brown bear, I wouldnt f-around with a .270 on a 10 foot bear.

Grizz hunting I would imagine is probably the most dangerous hunt most guys will ever go on, this side of the atlantic anyway. Should I ever be fortunate enough to hunt them I would take something much bigger than a 270. No need to limit myself on a once-in-a-lifetime trip. I saw a moose fall to a lesser caliber than a 270 so IMHO good bullet and placement a given your 270 will work fine for anything else.

if i was restricted to only 1 caliber rifle for the rest of my life, it would be a .30-06. game animals from coyote to elephants have fallen victim to this caliber for the last 100 years.

p.s. last time i checked, elephants are slightly larger than bears.

I agree the .30-06 is probably the best 1 gun all around, but when talking multiple guns I'd take a .270 over the .30-06 and have other bigger rifles for the bigger stuff.

I think the .270 would do it all decently, superbly on some, decently on others, not for the big bears though, personally I wouldn't have less than a .338 on the big bears.

If you're going for deer etc...for now, I'd say get the .270 over the .30-06 and later on figure out which magnum you want....

As of right now I'm gonna get the 270 but i also know that this won't be my last rifle that I buy. As far as how often I'm planning on hunting griz or most of the others I'll probably have something bigger. Just wanted to get some opinions.

The 270 is a fine round for everything you mentioned with the exception of Grizz.
I lived and hunted in Alaska with a 7 mm rem mag. I was a kid and didn't know better.
Now I'm being told by all the experts that I was way under gunned.
30/06 is the standard. I'll take the 06 over the 308 even though I use the 308 on deer.
But not on Elk. I have a friend that has taken all his Elk with the 308 though.
Moose? I don't think so. But in Europe Moose are taken with the 6.5x55.
Go figure.
The 30/06 covers nearly the whole spectrum of big game in North America.
In Alaska it is the most commonly used round. As is the 300 Win Mag, and the 338 Win Mag.
You can find those three in just about any store up there.

Good Luck.

I agree with all of the above. .270 is fine for deer sized animals and adequate for elk if you use a premium bullet and load. Shot placement and knowledge of trajectory is most important to someone going for an elk. The shots can space out a bit in the west and a bullet with flat trajectory and a load ofenergy is best for elk.

You know the saying "size dosen't matter" well it dose.So when you throw game in the mix over 800lbs and tooth and claws also.I would say go with biggest caliber you could shoot.
The 270 is a fine deer rifle IMHO(although I like the 25-06 better) it has worked on lots of big game. It's not my choice for elk or moose I like the 280 Rem as a min. 30-06 is good also. But when BIG BEARs are tossed in there I would like alittle more punch.I would say at a minimum 300 H&H(30-06 also) and the 300 Win Mag.

Jack Occonor once wrote that the lowly 35 Rem was a good Griz gun with 200 grain Core-loks,you know I will just take his word for it and stay with my 338 Win Mag or 416 Rem if and when I go after griz.

So to answer your question is the 270 Winchester big enough as a all around gun? In my eyes NO but you don't have to take my word for it,if you think it is then go for it.Let us all know how it turns out.

Oh and if you are planning on hunting in Alaska and Canada ALOT go stainless and synthetic.

Good luck and safe hunting.

A 130tsx out of a.270 @ 3150 would go clean through a browny just the same as a 300 or larger magnum.By the time your able to go grizz huntin you'll hopefully have killed many head of other game with this gun so you can decide if you think it's enough rather then just asking us.

Good luck,

Brett
