Is a 270 big enough?
 

I'm gonna pick up a ruger chambered in 270 win to use for kentucky deer and coyotes for now but eventually i'm going to go after mulies, elk, boar, bear (black or griz), antelope, or even caribu. My question is will this be big enough?

If I was going after the great bears, the smallest caliber I would use is a .300 Wby. Mag., .300 RUM, or 30-378 Wby. Mag. Good luck.

i have a ruger .270 and i love it. i use it on mulies, elk, bear, antelope and i will use it on a moose if i ever draw a tag. ive shot alot of guns andi still prefer my ruger over everything.

Big enough & good enough for all of those, with the exception of Brown Bear IMO.

IMHO, the 30-06 is a better "jack of all trades" rifle since it appears that is what you are looking for; however, decades may pass before you take on all those hunts and in the mean time your choices may change, so....probably no harm done.

The 270 Win was my first centerfire, okay on deer,not all that impressed above that.

For the big bears, I would use something bigger. The 270 will work if you use premium bullets and have very good shot placement. If I were you I would go with a 30-06, or 308. That will work for everything (maybe a bit too much for deers, and on the low side for big bears).

get the .270 for now. Later you may find you'll want to buy more guns...hopefully:D

I've used my 270 for basically all of my hunting and have taken sheep, moose and elk. I personally shoot the 140 gr Accubonds. I think you'll find that the people on this forum will be evenly split betwee a 270 being enough vs. not enough cartridge. Shot placement, knowing your limits and bullet construciton are probably the most important factors. I've seen guys with 300s or 338s think they have more leverage with shot placement by shooting a bigger gun.....not the case.

For brown bear, I agree with the others, you want to shoot the biggest thing you can comfortably shoot. Some outfitters won't even let you take anything less than 30 caliber. But then, how often are you gonna hunt griz?

Where there is smoke, there is generally fire.
Interestingly, no such smoke by moving up to 30-06.
