I went on a Colorado Elk hunt a couple years ago with three friends. Hunt costs less than $1000/person including gas/motels for trip and meals. Colorado has many diffeent areas that are set up differently according to types of hunts. We drove out and backpacked into the Flat Top Mountain Wilderness, and set up camp at 10,000 ft. You better be in shape to do this trip!!!!!! The air gets thin when carrying an 80 lb pack at that altitude. The next a.m. 3/4 of us shot legal bulls within an hour of each other. Then hiked down on the 3rd day to get pack horses to pack out the meat. Warning: The snow can fall 4 ft in 24 hrs. The temps drop to -20 F. You need warm clothes, light pack, light sleeping bag and light tent. It was one of the hardest things I ever did, but one of the most rewarding. A total do it yourself trip.

Corn,
If you read between Bird' s lines you' ll see he addresses the issue of risk.
Don' t forget to work risk management (what' s that?) into your trip plan.
Hope I don' t read about y' all in the Denver Post newspaper.
Good luck,

$200 to $250 each is the going rate for elk packing if you aren' t too far back in and more than that if you are further back in. Sombrero ranch will rent you a horse for $325 for the season plus a $300 deposit - you buy the hay and grain and use your own panniers. If you use the local meat processor, then that is another $200 per head. Out of state bull tags are $483.25 and out of state cow tags are $250.25. Haven' t paid for gas, food, or lodging yet.

Corn, I' d do your math on this one before heading out.

Never Go Undergunned,
EKM

You' re too late for WY Cdog. Have to apply in January to draw here. Yeah, that IS early... anyway, $410.00 for an elk tag. Comes with a fishing license too. There is also a drawing for reduced price cow/calf tags that go for only $160.00. A little tough to draw, but maybe the price is worth it. To me, any elk is a trophy. If you don' t use an outfitter, it' s tough to get one! I' ve never used an outfitter, but I' m finally starting to figure it out. Number 1 rule for a successful hunt....GET OFF THAT FOUR WHEELER! lol, it' s true!
