"....I'm just thinking that the recoil on that .458 RUM would be enough to scare anyone, I mean, that's making a magnum out of an elephant gun that recoils almost up to 50 lbs.,right? I can't imagine that a human being could take the force of that kind of recoil, it'd probably blow someone's arm right off!!!! "Makes the 45-70 look like a pea-shooter...."
YG123,

STEP 1: OUT OF WILD ASS GUESSING AND OVER TO SPECIFICS

HUNTING:
-- What game have you hunted and where?
-- What does that game weigh, live weight?
-- Is that game thin or heavy skinned and is it light or heavy boned?
-- What rifles have you used to harvest that game?
-- What has been the largest rifle (period)you have experienced shooting?

RIFLES:
What was the recoil (pounds & velocity) of your largest hunting rifle and largest experienced?
-- You'll need rifle weight, bullet weight, and cartridge propellent (powder)weight...
-- Use a carefully adjusted bathrooms scale for the rifleand reloading manual for the balance.
-- How much did that rifle weigh?

STEP 2:
Well, we'll see if we get past step one.

7mmRM and7mmRUM I would use both of these on thelargest andmost dangerous game in NA. The 7mmRUM is more powerful than the 300 weatherby all so.The 7mmWSM is all so more powerful than the 300 weatherby. Can't go wrong in the 7mm Mag family. The best lead bullet magnuam family on the market I would say for any NA large game animal.

It would be more like 100 lbs as the 460 weatherby has 99 lbs. Tell us where you found the 458 RUM.
Here's the link, go to the left, under "More", click on"available chamberings", and it's on the left under ".458 Cal"

They also have listed a .358 RUM under ".358 cal."

I don't know where you are getting your data but in all of my books, the 300 Weatherby packs More ME than any of the 7 MM Mag family. Including the 7MM RUM and 7MM STW. They are close but the 30's hold a good edge in bullet weight. Any are plenty for NA though.

458 RUM,
A wildcat IMHO, just because someone cuts chambered barrels for it don't make it much to get excited about. I'd go with a 460 Weatherby over the 458RUM thingie, though I consider the 500A2 to be better than either one (and it is not even a magnum) both the 460 Weatherby and the 500A2 are SAAMI certified.

How long have the RUM calibers been around? Remington advertises in the 2006 catalog only the 7mm RUM, the 300 RUM, the 338 RUM, and the 375 RUM.

I wonder how these two didn't get promoted much, I would think that the .358 RUM would make a good cartridge, judging from the good things I've heard about it, but it didn't get much attention, obviously, because none of you guys had ever heard of it 'till now.

I was comparing factory loads. Once you hit 400yrds the 300 weatherby starts to fall below the 7mms. I was comparing the 180 300weatherby factory against the 7mms 175 gr. For big dangerous game animals.
But as you said they are close on most charts for reloading though.

300 weatherby at 400yrds 1902 500yrds 1561 300yrd 2298 200yrd 2755
7mmRUM20471764 2364 2718

But the velocity starts to drop below the 7mmRUM from the 300 weatherby at 200yrds.
