antelope vs 25/06 ammo suggestions
I drew a Montana antelope tag this year. Just wanted to get a feel for what others thought for an ammo choice. I was thinking btsp or partitions. all opinions welcomed....thanks in advance

I use the 100 or 115 grain Nosler Ballistic tip for everything. Anything much lighter than that would be intended for varmits and may not perform with any degree of consistancy. The 100 Partition would be a good choice as well. I think the 25-06 is at its best with 100 grain bullets unless you move up to elk. At that point I would go with the 12. Partition or the heavies X bullet in that caliber.

The 25-06 shines on Antelopee's,it's a classic.I have killed goats with everything from 85 gr bullets to 122 gr.
I realy like the 115 gr to 117 gr bullet for the 25-06 here in Montana it can buck the wind fairly well(wich in Montana a 40 mph wind is a breeze).I can sight in my Ruger #1 or my M77 2 1/2 high at a 100 and it put me just about dead on at 300,with a top of the back hold out to 425.The farthest I ever killed a goat was 489 paces(about 450-460 yds I geuss).
I shot one 2 years ago witha 300 wsm that I don't know how far but there was 6 telephone poles between me and him so that roughly 600 yds.Thats how I gauged my yardage anyways and it worked hit him low in the chest and piled him right on the spot.
You picked a good caliber for you Montana hunt have fun and maybe I will see you out there.

Most any conventional bullet designed for hunting in 100-120 gr. will work well for antelope. Out to 300 yards the trajectories of flat base vs. boat tail are very much the same. If you intend on shooting past 300 then I would look to the Nosler BT in 100 or 115 gr. These weights are available in factory form from Federal.

I would say to try a variety of bullets in your rifle. I would stay in the 100 grain area and stick to bullets that expand pretty rapidly. Antelope aren't very tough to punch a hole in so you're going to want your bullet to do the most amount of damage while its in there. The main thing is using a premium bullet that shoots well out of your rifle. I would think that the Nosler partitions would be good, the Winchester silvertips, or the Remington Core-loks. You can't go wrong with a classic.

In my limited experience of killing antelope I found that they are quite easy to kill and that a partition bullet is not necessary unless that bullet flies particlarly well for you. Shoot whatever your rifle prefers, the goats will never know the difference.
