I might add, a wolf or a cougar could mistake you for a holstein cow or worse yet if you happen to cross paths with one of them range herferd bulls, you probably might want to hightail it out of there, you know what i mean.....

Robinhood, this is kinda like the trojan cow I built for hunting speed goats. You remember that one, the one that Icould not get out of my living room after assembly. If I ever do that again you could hide in the back half during breeding season.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Elkcrazy, remember you said i-- Could--be in the back half of your decoyduring breeding season, i think NOT, remember- most the time you are LOADED with methane gas, more so than the average person, you my friend are a walking time bomb, especially in small areas it is deadly, i hope you have explosive insurance, i will not forget the times where you won't even roll the window down,-- gee thanx,so i will pass, but thank you for the generous offer...

elknut,
i have watched your videos and the '05 elk season just cannot come quick enough, i can't wait to try out some of the strategies you have suggested in your videos, i have really learned alot of techniques that i have not even thought about using when you have that bull bugling or worked up....
I am curious if you have ever charged a bull?
I had a bull 2 years ago on this hillside and i could not get him to come any closer to me, so icharged him, bugling at the same time and breaking branches as i charged him, he reacted the same way and met me halfway, as he was attacking a tree i moved up the hill till i was within 20 yards but there was to much brush in the way to try to put an arrow thru him, so as i was moving forward he seen me and bolted, but what an adrenaline rusher to have a big bull come at you --charging and screaming at you at the same time...I am getting pumped just remembering this event...

Thanks for the info. Though I haven't gotten into elk hunting I do trully enjoy watching informative hunting videos. It sure beats all those promo tapes that pass themselves off as hunting videos.

RobinHood36---Good question??? You can bet your first born I've done that!!!!

On several different occassions I've felt the need to do this. I pick my spots as I do for many of the other methods I use per encounter. It's usually a herd bull & I can tell he's holding tight and getting figety at the same time, in other words he's fixing to grab his cows & run or the lead cow will take charge & do the same thing.

Rarely does the bull turn coward & run when you charge him screaming & breaking things on the way in. He will stay put and defend what's his, (his cows) especially if you put quick pressure on him & he realizes he can't round up his cows for escape quick enough before you get there. It can become quite a screaming match!! Nowadays when in that spot and am close but still can't see him, I hit him with the "Threat", yes I steal his cow, that pretty much ends the encounter!! <grin>

I also charge any group of cows I come upon. Of course I examine the situation when possible. If I'm spotted by my movement or whatever & I see they're nervous I explode right into the middle of them, when I can't see the bull. I then hit with a lip bawl type scream which challenges the real bull the right to keep his cows & at the same time it can call his cows away from him, this is the ultimate slap in the face to a real bull. If I feel he's hanging up, I don't get into a screaming match with him, which often results in no bull on the ground, I hit him with a level #2 of the "Threat" again that usually ends the encounter.

In both instances, you get a bull to "React" to the situation, this is key to getting him to throw caution to the wind!!!! No bulls sneaking in here, they come in pretty fired up!!!! <grin> You gotta love elk hunting!!!!!-------ElkNut1
