Phil from Maine 04-17-2013 09:55 AM

I did some more scouting this morning as well. I am trying to figure the best location for my blind when our season opens up.. ( less than 2 weeks now) I did see a total of 5 long beards.. 2 of which gobbled up a storm while I took their pictures..

It is good to hear from you.. Adirondack Al..

Good Luck snapper with the young fella.. Turkeys here move around quite frequently. They appear to almost always go right back to where they started though..

Here is a pic of the 2 gobbling up a storm in the road this morning.. I just hope I can find one of them when our season opens..

Phil looks like the best place for your blind is right in the bed of your truck lol. they move around here too but usually they are in the same general area for roost. it is not bad when it is just me and i can move and know what to do and it is not to hard to be quiet and make things work but when you got a boy and his dad along and neither of them have ever hunted turkey it is a different game.

Phil looks like you found a good spot. Is that private land or do you have to beat someone else to that spot?

Good luck snapper, that would be awesome for you to get birds fired up and close and a bonus would be for him to get a shot and kill a turkey. I like youth hunts so I can practice and check out all my equipment and set up.

j76 here are the stats, wgt 15.4 lbs
beard 10 1/4 "
lft spr 1 1/4"
rgt spr 1 1/16
I love to hear them gobble, When do you get to go after them?

thanks Adirondack AL, May will be here before you know it. Hopefully the weather gets better for you guys.

I am routing for all of you guys, especially now that my season is over.

Well snapper you would be about right at times LOL but, that would take the purpose of the hunt out of it.. Just road riding is not anyway to really enjoy the hunt.

John that is private land that is open to the public. It is paper company land as well a an easement for power companies.. A natural gas pipeline and a power line runs along this area. They create a field full of grass and brush that our wildlife enjoy each spring. This runs for an almost straight line of 83 miles. This gets traveled pretty hard during our hunting seasons. There is no sure fire way of trying to get a head of them. They will come in if they see a turkey out there some place. You can be calling them and some of these so-called hunters will try and call them away from you. In a case with a friend last year a guy drove his truck around my friends in order to drive up where he could just jump right out an blast a jake.. So it will be getting tough right off the bat. I travel farther back with less pressure and walk out where they power/pipelines leave the dirt road. These are the areas I concentrate on where on one can just drive by and put you at risk when doing foolish acts. Here is a pic of an area where some will be travel threw and almost certainly be ready for just gunning..

Setting up off to the right of this is almost certain some one will come along and mess your hunt or simply just start shooting to try and get one. I keep my safety in mind when turkey hunting in this type of area..

Thanks Bornagain! I'll get him posted.
2-3 inches of rain here till Sat mornin, as long as the weather clears up after that Monday could get interesting!

Ok, Dtc and Bornagain64 Have a couple of awsome scores for our team! That gives the rest of us something to shoot for!!!!!!! Good luck guys!! Lets see if the rest of us can top em,......or at least come close!!!

I think I may give up turkey hunting for a little bit. I have another critter in mind to hunt. And that is that stupid groundhog that said spring will be early. We are forcasted for 3-5" of snow tomorrow with 40mph winds. And then 50's before Friday. Talk about making a crappy, muddy mess to go out in. Maybe if I get tomorrow off because of the weather I may try and sneak down and try and find those gobblers in the storm. Maybe I can sneak up on them. If not then muddy fields here I come.

Phil from Maine 04-18-2013 01:53 AM

We call that kind of snow Mottz fertilizer snow. As it does not last long and it helps to knock the frost out of the ground. Then you will see all the green stuff start growing. I truly hope you have some great luck out on your next turkey hunt..

I do not think I can beat either one of the scores our team has right now. But, I will be trying to. We just do not have all the farms in my area so they are purely wild turkeys. There is a lot of them still staying in the woods right now due to no green grass or clover out in the lines yet. For those that were feeding them around their fields the flocks have pretty much left now. Also the fact that the feeding of turkeys has to stop by now ( by law ) until after the turkey season is over. Those dirt roads are getting traveled more so the turkeys are moving back as well. But, they are still there..

Mottz 04-18-2013 04:07 AM

I agree Phil, we can use any moisture we can get but gosh dang it, its turkey season. But its feeling more and more like deer season. I'm not going to give up though as now I want to get a bird close to the size of those birds that have been shot. Very impressed with the way the team is getting things taken care of. And plenty of time to go.

Phil from Maine 04-18-2013 05:22 PM

I agree Mottz our team is doing great right now!

Just to think some of us are still waiting for our season to open up.

I hope I can help it out as well. I do not see any reason why I shouldn't be able to. But, I also have my doubts about getting any as big as those though. Hopefully one will show up with a couple of beards on it. Then my score can help lift us up some more. I will be trying for 2 birds when my season opens up.
