Default Osceola Down

2 Osceola s down! Doubled up with my brother today. I called them in using a call I made and a Hooks Executioner mouth call.

Got to the spot before sun up, started to sneak in at first light. We heard him gooble, he was about 100-150 yards out. We set up quick thru out Delilah, my dsd decoy, and started some soft calling. They never gobbled to any of my calling and they started going away. My brother is not a turkey hunter, this was only his 3rd time hunting, so I had to try and keep him cool and explain things as I could. He heard them gobble way off and wanted to go after them. I would do some yelps and cuts every 10 minutes, but did not call that much at all. After about 20 minutes I heard some cackles , so I cut and yelped with the mouth call. 5 minutes later I heard some cuts a little closer, so I cut and yelped with the mouth call again.
The hens were on there way, and I was hoping the gobbler was with them.
The Gobbler was with them and he had a buddy with him. The gobblers went behind a clump of trees about 3 yards behind Delilah, I did a couple clucks and purrs with the mouth call and they spun around and looked at Delilah. I did a couple more and they started heading right to her.
Birds down, flopped around a few times and we had 2 birds on the ground. Took some pictures and packed up , we had about 1 1/4 mile walk out, headed for the truck by 8:00 am.

John

While I have always seen pics with the beard and spurs and a tape rule I have never seen all with bird weights. Some do not have the scales to show that. It was always generally accepted by stepping on a set of scales without the bird and then with the bird to get your best estimate. If that part of it has changed then someone should let us all know..

Congrats again John!

While our season does not open up until April 29Th for me with youth day opening the 27th up here. I took a drive this afternoon and saw 2 flocks of turkeys with the biggest being around 15 birds or so. The other had 6 hens and that was it. It was a clear sign of them breaking up and starting to move around now. I tried calling to the bigger flock but no gobbling as of yet. I drove up past them around 5 miles or so and on the way back I saw a tom standing in the side road. I stopped the truck and tried doing some calling. He gobbled back and after a while started walking towards the pick up with me setting in it. Finally after a while he stopped up and would not move ahead anymore. It was great to watch him do that and now has me worked up waiting for our season to start. He was a decent size bird but with a fairly short beard. I am guessing his beard to be around 7 inches maybe?? His spurs looked to be around an inch or so and I am guessing he is most likely a 2 year old bird because that area had around 3 or 4 jakes there last year. Anyways where he froze up and after a while decided to head back into some brush. I could hear some cutting going on while he was gobbling. I did not see any of the other turkeys though. When he started to strut his tail never spread out not even once?? So I am guessing they will be in full swing in another couple of weeks.. It should be great hunting up here then..
Here is a few pics to share with you all.. Good Luck and happy hunting! Stay safe!

He would not come in any closer..
