Tuesday was a bust. Wednesday dawned with hope and beautiful weather. We had watched a large group of turkeys go to roost and I was able to set up really close where they supposedly always flew out. Well I was greeted with thundering gobbles but today they flew to the east and got no closer than 80 yds. One satellite tom got in range joining the group but I passed on him (stupidly). They all worked away.

I regrouped and was met by my friend who suggested we check the farm where I have killed a bird each of the last 3 yrs (we hadn't seen much there this year). Long story short, we spied a group of birds near where I've had success before. He dropped me off to work them and he had something to do. As I was making my first move to get into position, his truck spooked them and changed my plans. They moved! I had to make a very quick hook move to get in front of the group. Made a quick call and a tom appeared. He saw me as I saw him and I had to make a quick move. I knew the gun could do it so at 52 yds he went down. Done and tagged out at 740!

Whats the stats on bird 2 blackheel

turkman1 05-03-2013 03:15 AM

Great job to all the hunter that kill turks.

Does any one know what place we are in???? I hope we all get a big Gobbler

blackheel 05-03-2013 03:51 AM

You scored both birds. Pg 30 has bird 1 at 66.25 and pg 32 has bird 2 at 65. I should have 3 birds total with my first overall bird being the one Doetrain scored.

bald9eagle 05-03-2013 04:31 AM

Can I ask a favor of you guys? I probably won't be back around for a long while so you guys don't need to reply.

On the morning of April 30 I lost my hunting buddy. Caitlyn Martin, my 17 year old daughter, was killed in a car wreck. Her sister, Alison, is alive but in a coma with severe head injuries. I don't want to ruin anybody's time but do me a favor. While you are sitting in the pre-dawn woods waiting for that first gobble say a little prayer for Alison. She needs all the prayers she can get.

Carry a youngster with you. Teach them about God's bounty and all he has blessed us with. Thanks guys.

Arrowmaster 05-03-2013 05:21 AM

baldeagle Im very sorry. You and your family will be in our prayers. May god bless you.

blackheel 05-03-2013 06:12 AM

Bald9eagle - been praying for all of you since I heard yesterday evening. We lost a newborn daughter who was my son's twin 4 springs ago. When I delivered her eulogy I spoke of the spring woods, in fact here is what I delivered
"One of my loves is spring turkey hunting. There is just something about a spring morning as the Earth comes alive. That transition from dark to dawn, from cool to warm, from whippoorwills and owls to cardinals and wood thrushes and the anticipation of that booming gobble all while soaking up God's glory is just the best. I'll never forget Christian's spring morning with us as the sun came up and shone into Kelley's room. The few mornings I got out turkey hunting this spring, Christian was alive with me when the sun came up." I carry a laminated photo of my wife with our 2 kids right after birth in my turkey sling. She's with me on every hunt.
I hope the peace of the Lord wraps your family and gives you a hedge of protection in these difficult times. Please know that my family will be praying for you.

SouthernStrut56 05-03-2013 07:44 AM

Matt, my family and I were so sorry to hear about this. My wife has family in Danville (your wife actually teaches my wife's cousin Jackson), and I know that whole area and surrounding communities are mourning your family's loss. We are praying for your daughter and for the strength you all need to pull her through. I'm not sure I have the words to say at this point, but I know everyone is praying that God continues to heal your Alison and that He provides you all with everything you need to get through this. So sorry for your loss Matt, and if there is anything we can do as team mates and friends, you know we are here.

EFH 05-03-2013 10:51 AM

Matt, me and my family are keeping you in our prayers. I know no words to say that could begin to help, but I do know you have another family here with your turkey hunting brothers. When I first came here my father had just passed and these guys reached out and embraced me like we had been life long friends. I just hope you know how much these men care about you and that our hearts go out to you. We are here for you brother.

turkman1 05-03-2013 03:14 PM

Here he is.......26lbs....9.5 inch beard......both spurs 7/8

The hornaday's with the winchester,,gave him the burnt chicken head look...

blackheel 05-06-2013 05:05 PM

Today's bird will forever be known as the horseshoe bird because I had one with me today. Got to my spot at just before 5 am. Walked a mile in. Heard nothing, saw nothing. Gave it until 7:50 and decided to take the long way out (1.6 miles to the vehicle). Tried some calling and couldn't strike anything. At the last intersection before I would turn towards my vehicle I looked left and nothing. Looked right and there stood a longbeard in range! He ran a few steps. I took a half a step and saw another male bird and 2 hens. They ran, my bird took a couple of steps and jerked his head up. Wrong move! Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good!

20 lbs 10 15/16" BROOM and 1.25" and 1 3/16" SHARP spurs.

blackheel 05-06-2013 05:16 PM

blackheel 05-07-2013 05:31 AM

Been praying for Matt and his family. They've weighed heavy on my heart.

Good luck arrowmaster. Some friends just got back from northern KS and they said it was tough - cold, wind, and unusually spooky birds. Hope it's not that way for you!

doetrain 05-07-2013 04:51 PM

Well Team I must apologize for letting you guys down yesterday and my heart really aches for Matt and his Family, which we all agree is far above what happens with the contest. Never the less I took Matt into the woods with me yesterday and all I could think about was getting a bird for my Brother and Team Mate. About 1:00 I heard a faint gobble about 500 yards away and behind me, every time I would call a faint gobble. I got up and carefully moved toward the area were I heard the bird. Crawled the last 20 yards after seeing him in a corn field an awesome bird which would have scored in the high 60's. I watched him and called softly trying to get him closer because he was 45 yards or so away but he would not budge. I aimed took the shot and missed badly, never even knocked a feather off him. Turkeys sure can run fast and he was gone in a matter of seconds not to be seen again. This really hurts after missing one Saturday evening as well, I guessed the distance wrong and nicked one in the wing. I have hunted at least once a day every day since the season opened and I would be lying if I said I'm really down after working so hard to help the Team and win it for Matt. I will be out everyday until the season ends Sunday. Please if your a praying man ask GOD to help me get a bird not for myself but for the Team and Matt. By the way guys you are doing a great job! I hope you don't haft to carry me to the end like dead weight, I'll do better these last 5 days GOD helping me. My wife and I as well as many Christian friends are praying and hoping that Alison recovers without any negative consequences. Please keep us up to date on her condition.

EFH 05-07-2013 05:17 PM

dotrain, you said bro! I'll be pulling for you the whole time!!

firelt72 05-07-2013 06:11 PM

I am a team 6 guy, but as a father of a 17 y/o daughter it hits home. I am also a paramedic and ff and have been there. My heart breaks for you and yours as does my family. We are Christian folks and will be praying. Arrow and Ethan, get me some info on the family and PM- pictures or something about the young lady. I want to do something special for him.

bald9eagle 05-08-2013 05:49 AM

I haven't read through the board but wanted to just give you guys an update. We laid Caitlyn to rest Sunday in probably the best service I have ever seen. It was perfect.

Alison is still in a coma and had a bad set back Saturday. Please keep her in your prayers. Good luck on the remainder of you seasons and God bless.
Matt Martin

SouthernStrut56 05-08-2013 06:04 PM

The Beard Bandits are praying hard Matt.

Press on in the Faith even though you and yours have suffered a dark Providence at this time in life. Be strong and of good courage the Lord is with you and will be your comfort in this time of mourning. The Lord bless and keep you in His peace and perfect love.

Hunted all day yesterday no birds anywhere. I had a yearling Buck in front of me for 20 minutes though so I did enjoy that while waiting for Tom to come by. Niether he nor miss Tom showed. My honey hole which I save for tough times in Memphis IN and where I got my 23lb. bird last year was over run with Trespassers. I found 3 blinds strung up in my favorite area and the foot traffic was on every inch of the 80 acres. So Memphis will not be where I get my 4th. Turkey this year, I have killed a bird there every year I have hunted. I'm at work ran out of vaction days and will get back out Friday evening and Saturday all day rain or shine for 3 last hunts for Spring Turkey. Sunday is the last day of the season, with Mothers Day and church in the morming I may get one last evening hunt in before the clock runs out. Wish me luck Team,I can't blame anyone but myself after missing 2 so far this season. Just maybe GOD helping me I will get one here at the end of a good season of hunting,I have had a rich time in the woods and I am thankful to GOD for the time I've had thus far. What a priviledge to be in this Country and do what we enjoy doing every hunting season, I enjoy the Forest so much and being able to have friends hunt with me makes it a great time. GOD bless the Teams effort, just maybe we will win and honor Matt with a 2nd. title this year. Later

SouthernStrut56 05-09-2013 05:44 PM

Very well said on both posts doetrain. It really is a blessing to be able to do what we do.

Now go out and get that bird this weekend doetrain!

Also, if some of you haven't been following Matt's updates over the past day or two, I'm happy to tell you that Alison has had a much better day today. Matt says to keep sending up prayers because God is hearing them all.

EFH 05-10-2013 02:48 AM

Go get em doetrain!

Had some hope on todays hunt when I spotted 2 Toms and a Hen 90 yards out in the field where I missed a bird Monday. One of them was the bird I missed he was sparring with a smaller Tom over the Hen. I watched for over half and hour before calling trying to figure out which way they were heading. They were moving right so I redeployed and set up my best Hen decoy trying to lure they new guy toward me. No dice they are most definitely call shy and I know one of them was shot at by me and who knows who else. I finally decided to crawl out to where they were since they would not come near any cover. I got within 40 yards but snapped a corn stalk nub the field was full of them and they were gone like a flash. So after sitting in the rain and crawling around on soaked ground I just came home wet and alone again. One more day with thank the Lord no rain will hunt from dawn to dusk Team Mates trying to help our total points. I will continue to give it my all that's all I know to do. Good birds are still being taken but not with ease. The young lady is one of my youth hunters I have taken out for 3 years straight. She got another bird on her own a 23lb. 11 1/2 Beard and 1 1/8 Spurs, I tried to get her on our team but Arrowmaster had a list of people ahead of her. This would have been one of our birds if she was on our team. The 2nd. picture is my buddy Mike this bird walked to him from 700 yards away without a call. He simply was set up were the bird was going it took 2 hours for it to get within 30 yards. Turkey Girls bird was taken without a call as well she was leaving the hunting area and heard him gobble she got the drop on him at 40 yards with a 20 gage. These guys give hope to me that I just might get one as well on the last day. Later

EFH 05-10-2013 06:00 PM

Good lookin birds there! Like how you stay after them till the end....I'm still pulling for you bro

DTC Jr 05-11-2013 01:09 PM
