RE: Team 14 Thread
Good luck MJR10, call in a big one for her! I can't get out til April 30 here. I'll hopefully get out a couple of times in RI before May 5th when CT starts. I'm going to miss the whole first week of the CT season because of work.
|
RE: Team 14 Thread
I hope to call in a good one for her, but get the big one for me the following thursday on the opening day and add it to the team score. I can't believe 6 out of 10 people have added birds for the team and I haven't even been able to get out other than scouting....

RE: Team 14 Thread
Season starts in the morning for us Hoosier hunters. I hope to have a big 'en on the board tomorrow night! I can't wait!

Great bird!! We're laying the smack down on these birds this spring!

RE: Team 14 Thread
I can hardly wait for Wednesday! My season is finally starting! I just sprayed down my camo with tick spray to be sure it will be dry by Wednesday morning. I put in for vacation Wed thru Friday, but not sure if I'll be out all 3 days. I have the weekend too so that makes 5 straight days for me to pick and choose which days to go out. I put in for tomorrow afternoon too, gonna drive to CT to pick up my license and tags. A stop at Cabelas might be in order too since it is close to the CT DEP office. Unfortunately, I'll miss the first week of the CT season due to work, but I've got 3 killer spots lined up if I can afford the gas to get there...

RE: Team 14 Thread
Just thought I woudl add guys, we are currently in 3rd place and that is without the 7 extra points that SouthernStrut's bird adds to his previous best from this contest, as well as the 67.75 points from my bird. If you add in ourextra 74.75 points that haven't been reported, that would put us in 1st place........we just haven't reported it yet because of bullshooter being gone.
Keep laying them down guys!! We have a really good shot at winning this thing!! I'm headed to call on Friday and Saturday for buddies in PA this weekend, and then the following weekend have 3 weeks to try and fill my two tags in NY. If I'm lucky Imay be able to top the one I have now. |
RE: Team 14 Thread
WTG Southern!! Man you are laying them down!

RE: Team 14 Thread
Well, my opener was uneventful. The birds were pretty tight lipped here, but I did find one hot on the roost. I saw some movement and thought I had him coming, but it turned out to be a bunch of deer that hung around for a good half hour or so. Rest of the morning was a washout. I'm blaming my new cabelas turkey lounger, lol. That thing is a pain in the butt to cary around, but your but will thank you for it. That thing is just too comfortable to sit in when you should be moving. Think I'll give that same spot a try tomorrow morning, then I suppose I'll go to workFriday since they're calling for rain. I'll hit it again on the weekend.
|
RE: Team 14 Thread
Uneventful for me most of the morning. Boxcall Willy on the neghbor land was trying to start a forest fire with his call I think. He was callin nonstop. I think he shut them down. I moved to other side of my property and called in a Jake at 11:30 and let him go. Then on my out of the woods I had a bird going at 11:50. Tried to setup and hunted until 12:05 trying to get him in...Can only hunt till noon so I snuck out of there and will go back after him tomorrow....
|
RE: Team 14 Thread
Yesterday was even slower than opening day. Very tight lipped (beaked?). I didn't think I'd even hear a gobble when finally I had one gobble a couple times on the roost. I got as close as I could without tromping thru thick stuff in the dark but I guess it wasn't close enough. He gobbled only a few times on the roost, then after fly down, nada. Spent all morning trying to locate something and did a bit of blind calling to no avail. Unfortunately, due to time constraints of my buddy, I'll have to hunt the same area tomorrow. I'll go elsewhere on Sunday if we don't score. I'm holding my best hope for CT, but I'll miss the first weekbecause of work. I'm the only one who hunts my honey hole in one spot I have there, so I'm thinking next Saturday will be my best bet for scoring the way its looking.

RE: Team 14 Thread
Just back in from Mo. Killed 2 longbeards, I have to get some sleep and unload. I will post up some pics tonight.
|
RE: Team 14 Thread
Okay guys and gals I will keep it short. Drove 14 hours to get out of the truck to gobbling birds. I killed my first at 1030 on the 23rd we had been in camp less than 2 hours. He was a good heavy 2 year old. 23lbs, 10 1/2 beard and 1" spurs. Number 2 came on the 28th. Hecame from the roost to the gun after only 6 calls. He was also a nice 2 year old. 20 lbs 9 1/2" beard and 1" spurs. There were a total of 3 of us in camp and we killed 4 birds. Some of the locals did very good as well. I saw more men hunting this year than ever. I saw 4 guys in two hours one morning, all were from out of state. Guess the price of gas has not slowed the turkey hunters...
![]() ![]() One of the locals killed two with multipul beards. ![]() |
RE: Team 14 Thread
Okay team 14 we should be up in first place now with my two birds. Something like 391.125 for a score...
|
RE: Team 14 Thread
NICE! Great lookin birds! Good work Bull! Sorry about not stepping in and turning in scores like I said I would, I thought you were going the first week of May, this week, and I've been tied up trying to study for finals. Hope it didnt mess us up. But again, WOW,nice job in Missouri!

RE: Team 14 Thread
Congrats y'all, keep em coming......;)[8D]:)

RE: Team 14 Thread
My season went from bad to worse. Heavy rain this past weekend. Got out Sunday, got wet, didn't hear a single gobble. Took a break to go get some coffee and ended up crunching the bumper on my truck. Today is BEAUTIFUL. Its the CT season opener and I'm stuck at work. I won't get out til Saturday, I'll be heading to CT. Things have to turn around!
|
RE: Team 14 Thread
Yeah it'll turn around RI. If you go back and look at some of my posts throughout my season here in Bama, I was pretty discouraged. Taking my buddies and having them miss good birds, being stuck in school on gorgeous days, raining every weekend, and stupid mistakes on my part. But hey, it turned around the last few weeks of the season and I ended up with 3 birds......(One extremely ugly bird) haha:D. Your luck will change, keep at it RI, at least you still get to hunt!!! Today was my last final, so no more school, but no turkey season! I have nothing to do but cut grass and drink beer.....which aint too bad of a deal! Good luck RI, let us know how it goes! Good luck to everybody else! By the way - Do they have all our scores in??? Seems like that one team has way too many points for their amount of birds. Just wonderin'

RE: Team 14 Thread
Pulled the trigget on my #1 PA bird this am. He came with another longberad, they looked like twins. Gobbled good on the roost, they hit the ground and It was easy to hear them drumming the entire way.It took over an hour for them to come 100 yds. They came to about 30 yds and I let him have a load of #6 shot.. It was a great day to be in the woods. I could hear 4 other birds gobbling, one was coming from another direction but he was just not quick enough to get a ride in my truck. 21.50lbs 10.50" beard 1" spurs. ![]() |
RE: Team 14 Thread
Bull nice strutter! I hope to tag one out in the last few days. I have 80 acres all to myself.....I have them figured out i think, but sounds like ran on Wed-Thur, but Friday and Saturday look good.....
|
RE: Team 14 Thread
Bullshooter layin em down!! WTG man! My season is over! At least I got one (my first) on the dirt. Good luck everyone else!!
|
RE: Team 14 Thread
Been a rough start to my NY season so far. Birds gobble on the roost and then sut right up as soon as they hit the ground. I have only been able to call Jakes in so far. Had a few mature birds fired up, but I can here the hens with them too and can only close the distance to 75 yards or so. Frustrating..My luck has to change sooner or later. I am going out every morning before work....
|
RE: Team 14 Thread
BULLSHOOTER!! That's how its done right there! I knew you were a slayer when you showed us that string ofabout 100 spurs! Man I wish I could try to get another, I'm already wishing it was March 15, 2009! Hey MJR keep it up man, like you said your luck has to change, it will! Good luck!

RE: Team 14 Thread
Well guys and gals, I am tagged out. Time to get the kids a bird or two. Here is how it went down this morning
Well I am not much on telling how beautiful things are, but this morning has to rank up there somewhere. I left work a tad bit early and was in the woods at 0519. As I stood listning to the world wake up I thought WOW am I am tired. But that was soon changed by a gobble. I moved within 80 yds and just sat and listen as 4 birds began tearing up the morning. Where I was hunting the timber is very mature, there is very little underbrush making it easy to see 200yds. My first 3 yepls were answered with I could only guess no less than 15 gobbles. And then the hens fired up, great I thought. I watched 7 birds fly down at about 100yds, 3 of which were longbeards, 1 jake and 3 hens. I watched as the 3 longbeards would strutt and gobble at every call. Twice the jake came looking for me, both time to within 20 yds. he would then fade back to the others. It was the hens that came looking with the 3 gobblers in tow. I shot the bird that seamed to gobble and strutt the most. With the hens at a mear 5 yds looking and feeding I pulled the trigger on a very good 3-4 year old bird. The shot was at 27 steps. He was dead when he hit the ground. I smiled and gave my thanks for my hunt. To say my 08 season has been good would be an understatement. I have taken 4 good birds, over 80 lbs of turkey with a total of 40"+ inches of beard. I have called up and watched 7 longberads die.The season is very young and I have made a bunch more memories. Now it is time to help and watch others enjoy the thing that I have loved for some 30 years. To everyone stilling hunting, do not give up, enjoy your time in the woods, store your lessons learned away for another day. And always remember " It could all be over in less than 30 seconds." The Fullfan 20.50lbs 1 18/ spurs 9.50 beard. ![]() ![]() |
RE: Team 14 Thread
Well, I called the landowner of my honey hole in CT to tell her I'll be by on Saturday. She confirmed that the birds are roosting right behind her barn just like they should be :) I've had birds come in on a string over there and I've had them so henned up that I've never seen them after fly-down. We'll see what Saturday brings. Congrats on a great season SouthernStrut and Bullshooter! You guys are turkey slayers! Congrats to everyone else who scored too.
|
RE: Team 14 Thread
Hey guys I tagged another longbeard this past Sunday which capped the end of it for me. Nice bird, but it won't beat the first one I turned in. So good luck to our team members that are still hunting.
|
RE: Team 14 Thread
Congrats Grizz, Great season! Way to lay the smack on em! Good work Bullshooter, you're a slayer sir! Congrats to everybody else who scored, we got a team of turkey maniacs! Keep it up and maybe we'll catch up and win this thing.
|
RE: Team 14 Thread
woohooooooooooooooo, y'all are some turkey killing fools.
|
RE: Team 14 Thread
Well team, my season has been less than stellar so far. Got to my honey hole on Saturday, not a gobble to be heard. The land owner said that was the first day she didn't hear any birds at all. That was after 2 days of steady rain tho... Hit RI public land yesterday, not a peep all morning. I'm going to keep at it and hit the woods when I can, but I'm looking for new tag soup recipes just in case.
|
RE: Team 14 Thread
Sorry to let ya all down but they beat me up here in Indiana.....This has been the worse season for birds I have ever been in. No gobbling, no Toms, hens everywhere.....Man I tried 11 out of 19 days. Rain, cold...The fact of the matter is I didn't get my bird. I had 1 chance this year and I blew it....My friend got his first bird A jake, I called that one in....He just walked in to the set up of dekes and dead jake. Oh well there is next year unless someone can get me out east and help me out :)
|
RE: Team 14 Thread
Well if finally happened this morning. It took 2 weeks or hard hunting but I connected on a good bird. I heard him on the roost and I set up between himand a field that I have seen him strutting in before. Or I assumed it was the same bird. When I heard him fly down I hit him with a few soft yelps and he lost his mind.He actually tried to circle me,and almost got behind me, but he gobbled one more timewhen he was to my left90 degrees and I still had enough time toturn on him. Made a few more calls and he came intoabout 30 yards. Benellidid thejob....
20.5 lbs 1" and 1.125" spurs 10.5" beard Score of 62.75 |
RE: Team 14 Thread
Congrats MJR, nice bird and sounds like ya worked for him!
later, CS |
RE: Team 14 Thread
Congrats MJR, great lookin' bird! Look at that nice thick beard! Puts us back in fourth, all we need is a couple more good scores! Who all is still hunting?
|
RE: Team 14 Thread
I'm still hunting, but things are S-L-O-W for me. Had one banging away on the roost yesterday, gone as soon as he hit the ground. This year they seem to just shut-up after fly down. I'll be at it again the next few days. There's still a couple weeks to go before my season ends.
