Team 15... Spurr-fect
#151
The season is over here in Oklahoma. The bird I posted earlier will be my best effort for the year. Good luck to you. I hope I get to post some more big boys before we wrap this thing up.

This is not to put any pressure on anyone I'm just trying to keep track of who's still in the mix for our team:

Thinking about chasing some with the video camera this weekend. I saw a couple strutting in a field in southcentral Oklahoma this weekend. Our season ended on May 6th.
Come on fellow Spurrfect team members. Gimme some scoresto post.

My brother called me the evening before the last day and told me he saw three turkeys in his pasture just before dark. One of them was a strutting gobbler.I thought thatIwould spend the last evening in a deer blind where he saw them.I had a problem come up at work and couldn't get away early enough to go.He went back to check on his horses that evening and they were within 50 yards of the blind. He doesn't turkey hunt. That was kinda the way my luck ran all season

Any hope of us picking up two or three more birds? I'm going out during my lunch hour to the national forest just down the street. Hoping I'll have one come running in for a quick kill. I doubt I can add much to my score though, birds in VA usually are in the same weight range as mine and I may only be able to add an inch to bird and 1/4 to spurs. But I want one with a bow so I'm still trying.

Well my season ended this weekend. Friday evening on the way home from work I was planning on hunting some national forest property between my house and work. As I was driving I saw a gobbler just entering the woods. I pulled over about 100 yards away and tried to "sprint" up the mountain to get in front of this gobbler. There was a rise between us so he couldn't see me. After a while of steady upward climb on a 45 degree slope I was winded. I got to the top of the rise that seperated us and started calling. Never got an answer. The next morning I woke up 20 minutes late and had to force march up the mountain behind my house. Not as steep but I was hurting by the end. No gobbles right away but I did hear one well after light. It was downhill on my neighbors property. Sounded like a jake. Eventually he moved uphill but away from me. Silence. I had a deer walk by in bow range until it got downwind. It bolted back uphill and meandered within sight for a while. Just as I was gathering my decoys I hear another gobbler down hill on the neighbors property. This time it sounds like a tom and it sounds further downhill, as if in my neighbors yard. His house is empty most of the time as it's only 3/4 finished. I tried calling him uphill but he wouldn't budge. Eventually I decided to go downhill part of the way and see if he'd try to close the rest of the gap. I took a route that wouldn't be direct so he wouldn't be looking my way. Halfway down I found an ideal setup and tried calling again. More gobbles but he wouldn't move. I think here I made my mistake and tried to move further downhill and may have exposed myself. From my next setup I never heard another response. I stayed long enough to be sure he wasn't coming in silent and then moved on. Didn't hear another bird the rest of the day.
Ouch! 6th place.
