Im still with ya buddy lol, not much else to do since my season is over. I have the same forecast up here as you do down there. If i was a betting man, id bet the deer are going to be on the move tonight before that cold front comes in tommarrow. I hope you stick a nice one. Good luck.
|
Today was the last day for our Gun Season. Our 2nd Archery Season comes in the day after Christmas, for 2 1/2 weeks. I am heading back out to Ohio for there 2nd gun season. I hoping to get an evening bowhunt in out there before it opens on next Saturday. I'm not planning on giving up any time soon. Archery doesn't close in Ohio until February 2nd I believe.
|
Good luck guys, I'm still trying to get out even though it won't help the team any. Mottz those plaques are great! Have ya thought about making them to sell. The rage one would go over well, I would even be interested.
|
My hunting area is just plain deserted! I didn't see any at all again. And I even sat in a stand that I haven't even been close to all season. Trail cams showed zilch also. I don't know but I only have til the 31st. I plan on sticking it out since I haven't missed a weekend since Sept 15th. So anyone else out there that hasn't got one, you need to because I am having a hard time pulling my weight. I'm hoping that we remain this team next year cause I'm having a blast with you guys chattin all the time.
Kelly, I had thought about selling them but I didn't know if anyone would be interested. One of my good buddies is a well known taxidermist and he asked me also if I was interested in selling some with his euro mounts. Plus, I'd never know what to charge for stuff like that. Gimme some time and maybe I'll whip one up for ya. I'll have to see if I still have the stuff. |
Sorry to here about that ryan, Its one thing to see deer all the time and just not get a shot, but is another thing not to see any at all. I feel for you.
I will agree with you that this team is freakin awsome though, Its great that we B.S. alot lol. Well i got my buck skull boiled today, My first one and didnt mess up, I was even able to save all the spiral cartilage in the nostrils lol, he looks perfect, now i just have to whiten him. |
I don't mess around with those euro mounts. Would be alright sittin around drinkin cold ones while watching it boil but I just pay a guy $50 to do it. Post some pics up when you're done!
|
They are pretty easy just time consuming and messy. My last one had a injury that took out his teeth on the right side. Not sure if he got a antler up the nose or shot. I'll try to get some pics up if it.

here's mine before whitening, i also took a pic of my elk, the bull would look better if my wife would quit stacking her scrap booking crap around it lol.

That looks really good Kelly!
Marty, yours are looking good also. But you may want to do something with those curtains:happy0157: |
I know, i think they are original with the house lol, my basement looks like a 70's disco room , but i just bought a new pickup last week so the whole updating the house thing is going to have to wait.
|
Idk if anyone is hunting Ohio or not but this year has been bad for me. my trailcams are showing deer but it is all night time. i havent hunted in over a week and i still am only getting a few daylight pics of some does.... This has been by far the worst year of hunting i have ever seen. During gun season, we killed 4 coyotes and 1 doe????? and only seen 6 deer, and we drive the crap out of our neighbors farms and ours.... something is wrong and i hope the DNR looks into it.
So i hope i can at least put a doe down for us and my freezer. |
Whats up fellas, sorry Ive been absent here lately, Ive been hunting hard here in Illinois. Im still on the hunt for one of our hit list bucks. Im not gonna quit till one of them have my arrow pass thru them. Ill get on soon to update the thread & let you folks know whats going on here in Illinois. Yall be good & happy hunting.
|
good luck jason, hopefully you can get one of those illinois monsters on a scorecard!!!
|
Any new word from nebraska or illinois? I have one more doe tag to fill with a rifle. Season opens up again at the end of the month. I cant decide which rifle to take though. My Hawken style .54 muzzleloader or my 7mm with the new hot reloads i have worked up for it? Which one would you guys pick?
|
Howdy fellas! Ive updated the thread & re-calculated the scores.
We're leading the contest with 735 2/8 points, with Team Buck-U trailing us in 2nd with 657 7/8 & Team 8 trailing them in 3rd with 557 6/8 points. Team 1 is in 4th place with 544 6/8 points & Team 6 in 5th with 504 4/8. With the primary rut over & deer moving into their winter patterns, the number of entries will likely slow down. But the caliber of deer may be just as good. Any good entry can change everything, so if youd like to keep this lead & win this years contest I suggest you get your asses out there & kill some more deer.:D Ive been hunting like crazy in hopes of scoring a world class buck. Through the rut I passed on so many smaller bucks that Im kicking myself for not arrowing one already. But Im going to hold out till I arrow my 150+. I still have 5 1/2 weeks of bow season to hunt here & after scheduling everything just right, Ill get another good 20 days afield, so Im not going to panic yet. Instead, Im going to utilize my game cams to pick up on their winter feeding patterns & set up an ambush. If it doesnt work out, Ill end up taking one of the smaller bucks on the property, but Im not giving up just yet. I hope everyone is having or has had a great season. This has been an interesting contest with a great team & Id like to see us win this thing so we can do it again next year. So Jesse, get your ass out there & put a doe down. :happy0001: |
I hope you get him jason!! A 150+ whitetail for me would be a far away dream, theres not even many rifle hunters around here that have taken one over 150. But, from what i hear, anything is possible in illinois.
|
hey yall i as well am sorry for the absence, gonna hit it hard in the am..

I'm headed to Ohio tomorrow morning. I'm going to check the trailcams and get an evening bowhunt in. Gun season comes back in on Saturday & Sunday. I'm hoping I can put one down this trip.
|
Good luck Scott, we'll be rootin for ya bud.
|
Thanks Jason, I need it this year. Good luck to you this weekend too.
|
Best of luck to all of you guys this weekend!!
I went and took my blind down this afternoon. I took my shotgun along with me and ended up getting 2 pheasants, should have had my limit but i couldnt hit the house from the living room lmao, but it was fun either way. I have spent so much time bowhunting these last few years i think i have forgotten how to shoot a shotgun. |

You should definetaly knock down a down a doe jesse. The way i see it, if you ever think you have too much venison, just make more jerky lol.
The only doe i killed this year i gave to a friend. I am saving the 2 bucks i got for sausage and jerky (except for the backstraps). Gonna try to get a doe with the rifle in a couple weeks for steaks and roasts. |
Even though I'm guessing I wasn't going to see anything, I am still a little disappointed that I did not get out this last weekend. But there may be a little help on the horizon for me. Weather is calling for 4"-6" of snow Wednesday. Finaly a little moisture and if the snow sticks around, I'll be able to see some tracks of where the activity may be. Not giving up quite yet.

Last day of Muzzleloader season today here in NY. I did sign up for a special doe hunt in January to reduce population in a county south of me. Get out there and kill a doe Jesse! I see Team 3 put another 25 pts up there.
|
BTW...A big kudos to Jason for keeping the participation up on this thread! If you add up the scores of our bucks and divide by the number of team members we only average 53.2" of horns per member. This shows the importance of participation. I like how you layed out the first page with our scored entries as well. Nice to have an attentive Team Captain!!!

You hit the nail right on the head imo!!! Jason has done a great job as team captain and i would like to keep this team for next season so lets continue to "Whack em and stack em" lol. That slogan works for deer too right lmao. Too much duck dynasty in my free time i guess.
Thanks for the kind words gentlemen. Now, unless you want me & my 2013 team kicking your asses next year, ya better get out there & kill some more deer. :D |
lol, jason from ny and marty's hands are clean, its all on you guys now!!! But seriously, even if team 3 gets a small buck we are screwed.
|
Well guys, I had opportunity this weekend on a buck but I just wasn't going to shoot him. He was a very busted up buck. His right beam was broken off just past the G1.
I want to see him next year. He was a 3 year old. Our 2nd archery season comes back in on the 26th for 2 1/2 weeks. I will take a doe then and I'm still holding out for a buck. I feel bad. I have been entering bucks in the contest four straight years in a row and we lost our lease this year and everything changed. I'm not giving up though. |

Luckily I worked it out & Ill be hunting Thursday thru Monday. Now that the herd is back to some regularity again I want to be afield as much as possible. Ill be posted up on food during my evening hunts & between the ag fields & the bedding during my morning hunts. The extended forecast for central Illinois is predicting some bitterly cold temps this weekend so Im pretty confident that I can arrow a good buck. Good luck yall & happy hunting. |
Something has got to show sooner or later scott, just keep at em. I have had years when it seems like there isnt a shooter buck in the woods, but there is always one that seems to show up, sometimes my part doesnt always work out but then again sometimes it does.
|
yeah not sure if the nex 2 days are gonna be worth a crap a far as hunting goes. Epic blizzard tonight through friday morning. Talking 14-20 inches of snow and 45 mph winds! Yikes!!! Stocked up with food and drinks and gonna ride her out. Thinking that the picked corn and bean fields will be a major draw once the storm blows through. At least it wont be bitter cold but that will definitely be a LOT of snow..... Any ideas? Im guessing the food source will be the place to be to power down a doe....
|
Thats where i would be heading after the storm, but when the snow is too deep the deer around here seem to stay in the little bit of timber we have and eat the moss and foliage off the trees. Either way, i feel sorry for the poor sob that has to drag a deer through that much snow lol. Note to self- bring a sled!!!

I'm fixin to head back out and try my luck this weekend before the storm hits. I can't help the team now but I'll post some pics if I get luck. Good luck to everyone still out. Have a merry Christmas.
