Well I stuck a buck at 655 this evening I hit him in the shoulder so I snuck out of there at dark and im gonna let him lay over night so hopefully we will find him in the morning.
|
Great job Sean!!!!! Hopefully he is down and we will be looking at the pics real soon. Good luck finding him. Good luck to everyone else out there. I will be going out in the morning hoping to nail another doe if I can get off work early enough. If not i won't get back out until Monday.
|
I hope he is too bud he will be the biggest buck to date. I have been freaking out about it the whole night. so far I only got 4 hours of sleep tonight I will be surprised if I get any tonight. I have been going over and over the shot in my head and how much penitration my arrow got i hope i find him.
|
Sean, you must have at least a little information you can give us. How many points? How wide? How tall? How much mass? What do you think he might score? Broadside, quartering away, quartering to, how many yards? The suspense is killing me too. You going after him at daybreak?
|
I forgot to ask, do you have any trail camera pictures of this buck, or is this the first time you saw him?

i have 5 pics of this buck he is a management buck he has a lot of mass throughout he just lacks the points on his right side. first i am a terrible story teller but i will try and tell the story.first i will talk about this field and what i was hunting in this field is a creek that's about 60 yards wide with a wheat field on each side a big crp and wood lot or the back. of it we have this stand setting in about 25' up in the V of a evergreen that's over looking 2 major trails. great little spot there's 4 deer that i was hunting in there this year 3 big tens one being over 180" and then this buck that i shot last night. so i pull up in the farmers yard get out of the truck get everything together spray down chase away the farmers dog about a half dozen times. get half way across this wheat field realize i for got my camo face paint walk all the way back to the truck grab it spray down again. walk back out across the wheat field pick up my bow when i got to the water way that leads into this stand and look up in the corner of the wheat field about 40 yards from my stand there is a doe and a fawn. the doe pins me so i freeze and we stand there looking at each other for about 5 mins she finally starts feeding then picks her head up really quick to see if she can catch me moving. she starts to walk across the field towards me so i nock a arrow finally i give up and just start walking and just scared her off thankfully she didnt blow and stomp witch i was afraid she was going to do. i finally got in the stand and get setup about 430pm finding that that seat cushion is no longer there. so i had to sit on my jacket the whole time witch is really uncomfortable. i set there for 2 in a half hours without seeing anything so i get the phone out text my buddies and the wife seeing what there doing to pass time. i get on the here and as i am typing "there are no deer in kansas" i hear something look up and see this buck 10 yards from the tree behind me licking a branch and milling around. so i put the phone in my pocket in my hss. grab the bow draw back and find out theres a little branch that is hitting my arrow so still at full draw i stand up work my butt so i can sit on another limb that is behind my stand. that will let me clear the little branch i put the pin right behind the shoulder and touch the release. and i guess i pulled the shot to the right from being in a really awkward position and nailed him right in the shoulder. he was broadside to me he grunted really lound and mule kicks runs under my tree and goes 25 yards stops and stands there then lays down for probably 10 mins. then stands back up tail going side to side real fast goes into the tree row and i didn't see him anymore after that so i sat there until dark grabbed a light out of my pack leaving my bow and everything in tree climbed down a sneaked out of there. so hopefully he didnt go to far bedded down and expired pretty close. i will be out looking for him around 9 or so this morning.
|
I went out this morning and it was the first time I did not see a single deer. The lull coupled with the high winds I'm sure didn't help matters any. We are waiting Sean. I really hope you have some pictures for us. Hope to hear an update soon.

Well this is my second year bow hunting (I have been shotgun hunting for 15yrs). I smoked my first deer this morning. at 7:20 this morning 3 doe's came out of the timber and walked into the farmers entrance to his field 15 yrds to my left. I really couldn't tell which one was the biggest so I picked the one that I thought looked the oldest and put the pin just behind the shoulder and let it fly. Well the rage did it's job! The Doe ran about 65 yards into a crp field and died underneath a small tree. So I finally have my first kill!
On a side note. I could have shot 1 of 4 small bucks opening weekend but they were really small and I didn't want to waste my first buck on a 3 pointer. And I didn't think you guys would be to happy about it either. I really hope Sean steals my thunder with a big Kansas buck! |
Congrats on ur first bow kill bud we wouldn't have cared if u shot the little buck if ur happy with it kill it. But a little update on the deer I shot it last night at 6:53pm I let it lay until 8:15am so I gave him 13hrs this morning I found my arrow I got about 7" of penetration I started tracking it there was no blood at all besides where I seen it bed down then get back up. But I started just walking the deer trails I went about 80yds and I ended up bumping him out of his second bed went over and therewas some blood there but I backed out and I will look again. Tomorrow for him if I can't find him then I guess its back to hunting
|
well i went back out this morning and walked the whole creek out and finally found him about 700 yards from where i bumped him yesterday morning. he has 13pts not as big as i thought but i will take him after all this work. i think i will go ahead and put him on the wall score wis i'm guessing 110 he is a management deer that needed out of the herd. i will have pics up in a while.
|
I will get the measurement all wrote up but surprised me came out to a non typical score of 142 5/8 with 13 points
|
Got out this morning, saw 5 does, one solo that just came running by.. thought forsure a buck would follow but nothing. Then I turned around an hour later, had two right under me, saw me move.. caused a ruckas... One came back, but it was the smaller and I let her walk... O well... prolly shoulda took that doe anyways..
|
Been out a few times this fall havent seen anything, i got 20 days off starting thursday ill be hunting each day. Hopefully I can help the team out! good luck all!
|
ok i finally got the computer to work with me here is the buck that i shot oct 14th i found him this morning after i walked the creek i found him about 700 yards from where i bumped him on oct 15th kinda of funny last year i shot my buck on oct 16th this year i find my buck on oct 16th. depending on how you score him if you add the tip to tip messurement greatest spread and inside spread i will get 142 5/8" but if you just add the tine length mass and inside spread you will get 114.5" so depends on the scoring sheet on what he will score.
here are a couple pictures of the deer and some random pictures that i took while sitting in the stand. this is a picture that i took about on hour before i shot my buck do you see the smiley face? i shot the buck at the lower right hand corner of the mouth. ![]() here is a picture of my bow the camcorder is a Kodak play sport witch i forgot to turn on before i shot my buck. ![]() this picture i was trying to get my camera on my phone to be quiet when it took pictures i got tired of my head cover so i went rambo on them lol ![]() here is me with the buck ![]() different angel of the buck ![]() me and my nephew with my buck ![]() |
Congrats on your deer Sean and Joe! Man, we are scoring some real bar setters! Way to go guys!
The elk hunt this past weekend went pretty well. My sister and I divided two Kentucky rifle hunters up-she took one out while I took the other. By day's end on Saturday,I placed my hunter in sight of 22 elk-three bulls and 19 cows. He missed a 5x5 bull at just under 200 yards. This morning, I had him within 30 yards of a young button bull for a good ten minutes. We were waiting for something with real antlers to show up...it didn't happen and the youngster walked away. An hour later a shot echoed across the mountaintops. A quick check on the radio and sure enough my sister's hunter landed his first elk. It's not the biggest, but it was definitely earned! We spent the rest of Sunday packing elk 1-3/4 miles back to the truck. Luckily it was all downhill! ![]() I have two more weekends of elk hunting and then I'm back to concentrating on deer...ya'll are doing well! Keep up the good work! Cole, I'll get your avatar to you today! Remember to pm me your email adress if you haven't received your personalized avatar. Does anyone besides me have a feeling A11-In is going to win this contest? |
Will

That is a pretty cool looking buck. Great job on sticking with it and recovering him. Great job there on the elk too. That is pretty sweet. Prime time is coming boys, get out there and good luck!!!!!

We are off to a great start! We need to keep the pressure on. I see that a few of the other teams have taken deer and some of them are pretty nice. We just gotta keep at it and get in the woods as much as possible. I will be back in the woods this weekend. Hopefully the temps stay down and the bucks start moving.

On the evening of October 18th. I shot this doe here in Tuscarawas county, Ohio. Here are a couple pictures. What is going on with everyone else. Anyone seeing any rutting activity yet. I will try and get out Thursday evening, Friday and Saturday, Monday evening. Then my vacation starts and I will be off from the 25th of October to the 14th of November. Good luck to all.
|
Great doe Shawn! I only get to hunt on the weekends but it has been nasty here all week with rain and highs in the 40's. The forecast for this weekend is supposed to be sunny and 60 as the high so I am hoping this cold spell will have snapped them into action alittle.
I think the first weekend of November I will be going down to where I shotgun hunt to do alittle bow hunting and hang stands for the up coming shotgun season here in IL. Has Sean turned in his score yet? |
no i havent turned in my score yet i will here in a little bit though.
|
Anybody been seeing anything or shooting anything?
i put my deer on the score card and i added up the scores so far we are in the lead with 270" inches second place has 193" if someone gets a decent deer we should have a decent lead on everybody. |
I think if everyone can nail a nice buck between 110"-150" this contest is ours for the taking. We are off to a good start and prime time is yet to come. I know this weekend here in Ohio looks very promising. Just had some heavy rains and windy conditions which will be ending Friday afternoon. Temperatures are dropping and the pre-rut should be just about in full swing. Good luck to all!!!!!
|
please dont talk about the rut lol i'm hating the fact not being able to be in the stand and not being able to shoot another deer. i am trying to figure out some way that i can make it to texas or mississippi for a rut hunt in january.
|
Come on over and visit me in Ohio. I can put you onto several does to take out.
|
thanks buddy but that's the reason i'm not going out here is because i would hate to have a good buck come in and not be able to shoot it.
|
Congrats on another deer Shawn, you are a machine!
I'm still hunting elk for the next two weekends. I actually have 22 people coming to Colorado for our second rilfe season, all staying and hunting with me. We have a total of six bull tags, six cow tags, and six buck tags. I am anticipating about a 50-60% success rate. There will be some observers in the mix. I'll be back in the deer woods by the first weekend in November. So, for now, I will have to live deer hunting through you fellas. Keep the stories and details coming. I absolutely love reading everyone's hunts, whether they're a success or not. If you cannot shoot them with a bow, use a camera. Information gained can be put to good use down the road. Good hunting everyone! |
Make sure you post some good Elk pictures. I have always wanted to go Elk hunting and I just love hearing about it and seeing pictures.

Well, guess what happened to me Friday evening. I sat for 2 1/2 hours and nothing. It hit 7:00pm and I said it's time to get down. Then the fun began. I hear crunching to my left, crunching out in front of me. Legal shooting light is 7:07. I said to myself you better hurry and come to me. The crunching out in front of me I never seen. The crunching to my left was a different story. I watched and I finally seen the deer after about three minutes. So, it is now 7:03. I have 4 minutes left. The deer starts to come up the hill but he is angling towards me. He finally gets to a point where I can see his rack. This buck made my 144" buck look small. He kept angling towards me but was going to end up going behind me. He stops about 15 yards directly behind me. He stood there for like 15 minutes. The he trotted back the way he came for about 15 yards. I could not get down because I did not want to spook this buck from this area. We still have three more buck tags (wife, son, daughter) and I definitely do not want to blow this buck out of the area. He starts to walk off and I wait to get down until I can't hear him anymore. I finally get down like at 7:30. After I let my bow down and I climb down out of the stand I thought everything was cool. As I was unhooking my bow from the string I hear this deer blow at me. I think it was the buck but I'm not sure. It could have been another deer that was coming out of the bedding area. This stand sits just outside of probably the largest bedding area and most secluded bedding on our property. I just really hope I did not spook that buck. I am placing a no go on our 2 stands on this bedding area for about a week. I know a big mature buck will usually tolerate one time being spooked and after that if it happens again he will more than likely avoid the area for quite awhile. So probably towards the end of this coming week we will be getting back in there. If something similar to this happens again everyone knows to stay in the stand longer to try and avoid this. This is one thing I hate about evening hunts. Any of you guys ever experience things like this?
|
Yea i have had that happen before as long as he didn't see u climbing outta the tree i wouldnt be scared to go backing there the next day. All he knows is u was a funny looking coyote. But if he did see u climbing down the stand i would move it 20 or 30 yards in any direction

Well I was able to get out and hunt last night. I was in stand by 3pm and it was dead until about 5pm. Out in the worked corn field a small buck apeared from the timber that borders one side of the field and worked his way toward me in the tree line I was sitting in. As he got closer I could see he was a small 6 Pointer. I decided not to shoot him but as he was hanging out under my stand another small 4 point popped out of the timber and these two baby bucks just hung out whithin 15 yards of my stand for about 30 minutes. They even sparred in front of me for a couple minutes.
So I wouldn't be tempted to shoot the 6 I didn't even pick up my bow. It was pretty fun to watch them. I just wish Dad would come out and play instead of the boys! Here are a couple pictures of the baby 6 pointer. |
Yeah, Saturday morning I had a 5 pointer messing around my stand for quite a while. I will now be going out again Monday evening. I will be trying to get another doe. I will be sitting in the stand I call my doe killing stand. It will be after another rainy day so if it stops raining when it is suppose to I'm sure I will be successful again. My last night of work is Monday night. Then I will be off for 3 straight weeks. I can't wit. It will be a great 3 weeks in the woods!!!!! Good luck to everyone else going out. Shoot a big one for the team!!!!!
|
I just talked with the landowner of one of the properties I hunt on. He told me about this monster buck he has been seeing every morning and evening. There is a low spot in his front yard about 80 yards away from his house. He said alot of does cross through this low spot both in the mornings and evenings. He said he has seen this buck hanging out in this low spot like 5 days straight now. I will be putting up a stand in this spot tomorrow and hopefully my wife or one of my kids will be able to nail this big boy. At the least it will be a great doe killing stand.

Some photos from this past weekend.
Right out of the shoot on Saturday morning, three of us walked up on a nice 5x5 and 6x6 mule deer. Sadly, none of us had deer tags. Then this little fella graced us for several minutes. We were hunting above treeline (about 12,700 feet in elevation). Up there, you feel like you are on top of the world, at least I do. ![]() Ten minutes later, young Tom Hill dropped his first elk. It's a bull calve but counts as an anterless elk. Tom picked this one out of a herd of 20 (three bulls and 17 cows). It was so cool. I stopped the herd with a sharp loud whistle. The three bulls were buried among cows (no shots whatsoever). The herd bull spent three minutes bulging back to me. When Tom had a solo animal without others behind it, he dropped the hammer. Check out the world below in the background. We spent most of the day packing meat back to the truck... ![]() We saw a lot of ptarmigan while walking about, what a cool bird. ![]() On Sunday, our first sit was a bust. I took Steel Sullivan and Michele Marks to a spot that either holds elk or not. When they are there, the hunting is good...you usually get a 500 yard or closer shot from a mere 13,500 feet above sea level. We moved back down below treeline for the afternoon hunt. Kudos go out to Michele. As a cancer survivor, she passed her hunter education exam with a perfect 100%. She wants to learn the art of hunting, I'm obliged to teach her. She hung with Steel and I for the entire weekend as an observer. Next year, She'll have her own elk tag! I look forward to the day I can help her call the shot. ![]() Michele, Steel, and I cut a fresh set of tracks around 2:00pm (there was about an inch of old snow on the north side of the mountain). We followed the five elk back up the mountain towards timberline-about a half mile. It was obivious a bull was among the mix. At 4:00pm, the three of us landed this young bull, we caught out feeding above the trees.:fighting0007: . With additional help, we had the meat stored back at camp by 8:00pm. |
Thats just awesome.
|
It's game time boys & girls! Team 13 just put up a really nice 170 buck to take the lead from us. I hope we can respond with a few more nice ones of our own.
I have noticed that some of our team really hasn't posted since they checked in. I hope they are still in this thing! If you quiet teamates read this let us know how your season is going. :pcwhack: |
Well the good news is, Ill be hunting alot more this season, the bad news is I lost my job haha, Amazing how hard you work for people and they throw you away for no reason, gotta love corprate. Been hunting every morning and havent seen anything, prolly goin out to the 100acre lease next week for at least a week. Huntings free, and I need to save $ and fill the freezer :)
