Headin downstate in the a.m til Sat morn to dump off my little one, then will be scouting hard the rest of the weekend! Come on Monday!!!!! Can't wait

Mottz 04-14-2011 03:55 PM

Just looked at radar and my hunting area is getting pounded right now. And it sounds as if it is going to last through tomorrow. But they are saying upper 60's and sunny for the weekend. Hopefully 2 days of crappy weather gets them all excited to get out and be frisky on the nice days!

Mottz 04-14-2011 04:43 PM

Before I forget to ask again, is anyone a big addict to trail cams? I have 6 of them that I just put out last week. Seems like I add 1 or 2 a year. If anyone does, lets see some pics.

zubba 04-15-2011 05:17 AM

Good luck to anyone heading out this weekend. I will be out tomorrow with a buddy. The wind & rain are supposed to hit, but were going to give it h#ll anyways.

@ Mottz about the trail camreas....yeah, I'm addicted. Me and my buddy hunt a couple farms together and between the two of us, we have 5 Bushnell Trophy Cams, 2 ScoutGuards, 2 Cuddybacks, and 1 Moultrie. We really like the Bushnells. Good trigger speed, good quality, and excellent battery life. The ScoutGuards are similar except the remote sucks ass.

Mottz 04-15-2011 06:39 AM

With that many cams it sounds like you can surround an area pretty good. I have 3 Moultries, 2 Scoutguards and I just got a Uway that is out on its 1st run now. Anxious to see some pics from that. I like using video modes on them but any contests out there want still pics. I see that moultrie is coming out with some mini cams that might be worth looking at. It has a plot watcher feature to it.

DTC 04-15-2011 08:32 AM

Season starts Monday here in MO, I am sure looking forward to it.

Mottz 04-15-2011 01:32 PM

Mottz 04-16-2011 08:36 AM

If you called the hens in, I'm sure you'll get that tom to come in sometime. Keep at him mud. The future holds a downed bird for ya!!

mudchicken1012 04-16-2011 06:08 PM

no birds wanted to play in the rain in am and worked this afternoon .so didnt get back out ... trying private spot i hunted last year and had hens come in.hope a tom is in area tomarro

Mottz 04-17-2011 09:02 AM

Birds are killing me. Sat up real close to the roost and they decided to fly to the other side of the creek which is heavily flowing since our last storm. Had some strutting to every call but they wouldn't fly over. Then they all took off running for an unseen reason. Few minutes later I seen a guy and his dog walking around on the neighboring property. Never did catch back up to them.

j76 04-17-2011 10:42 AM

Well the Bro-in law was nice enough to give me first crack at our honey hole! made the drive this morn to take a peek and talk to the land owner. Here's a couple pics i took while out there. :jaw:

And yes, these were takin today and the season opens tomorrow!!! Land owner claims he has over 50 birds that frequent the prop but wind and rain yesterday and 40 mph wind and snow today is keepin them hidden, but the opener is supposed to be light wind, partly sunny and in the low 40s. So i would think they would have to be all over tomorrow. Signman53 and myself will be leaving here at about 3:30 am to get up there befor daylight, hopefully by this time tomorrow we will be puttin a bird up for ya guys, wish us luck, we are definately gonna need it!!!!!!!!

kellyguinn 04-17-2011 11:11 AM

Well I'm back and again with no dang turkey. The weather put a hurtin on the hunting. We started off with 40 mph winds with gusts up to 80. I think all the birds were blown south to TX...

I did have one this morning come to about 60 yards but would not come in. He just gobbled and headed to the green fields and then off thru them. Hopefully I can get one or two chances closer to home before the season ends..

j76 04-17-2011 11:11 PM

Ok I'ts 3 am, 32 degrees, no rain, no snow, and no wind! Got an 1 hr and a half drive and a half hour walk, HERE WE GO!!!

zubba 04-18-2011 11:46 AM

Just checking in. Although my season doesn't open until Wednesday, I went out with a buddy this weekend. Seen birds, but tough hunting conditions. Between strong winds, rain, snow, and temps in the 30's....the birds were hiding out. Heard a few gobbles, but nothing like a warm spring day.

I will be back out later this week or next weekend, going to watch the weather. Good luck everyone.

j76 04-18-2011 06:12 PM

Well my seasons over. Will give details and pics tomorrow, got to get to bed.

Sorry guys. Didn't go down. Had one huge Gobbler come into our set up, but in high wind, deke started spinning, and he left running spooked. Tried to hit him on the run, at 50, and put the spread over his head. By not staking the foam deke down, like I know to do, I maybe cost me my biggest Tom ever. Rookie mistake, and I'm not happy about it. Will be after them again on vacation starting Sunday for 9 days. Have 4 tags to try to fill in 9 days between Kansas and Iowa. That's going to be a challenge.

Does that mean you got one? If so, let's see the pics.

My season opens tomorrow, but the storms moving through aren't going to play well for me. Might sit out tomorrow, then give it a shot Thursday.

Well Jay, at least ya seen him, that had to be a thrill!! 4 tags in 9 days!!!! Sounds like it would be a fun problem to have!!! Good luck to ya!!

j76 04-19-2011 08:24 AM

Well, temptation got the best of me!! Sorry this is'nt more impressive but the way the rest of yesterday and today went combined with the crappy weather forcast we have coming, i now think it's a good thing i took what i did when i had the chance!!

We went in to this spot blind yesterday morn, as daylight started to break we had a ton of gobbling on the roost just a 100 yrds or so in the woods behind us. They hit the ground and went quiet for a bit then a couple started back in. My uncle started calling and a hen that was with them started calling back, within a couple minutes we could tell she was close in behind us. Spotted a string of birds coming around and out to the right of us a bit and could see it was about 5 jakes and 6 or 7 hens. They hit the feild and swung around and crossed about 20 yrds in front of us and 3 of the jakes went right to the dekes on our left side. We planned on just letting them walk but as they left the dekes and walked away right out in front of us i noticed the one had a double beard. I've never got one with a double beard, really didn't want to wind up having to hunt till the last minute of the last day like last yr, and with scouting going as poorly as it has this yr was really doubting i'd get another chance like this. So i peeled him. After i took him i was kinda regreting it, but after hitting a couple other spots this morn trying to get my uncle one, the outlook is pretty grim, not much happening anywhere!! With 6 inches of snow on the way, my descision is looking better by the minute!!

17lbs 3 oz
3 1/4 and 3 1/8 beards
1/4 in spurs (nubs)

zubba 04-19-2011 09:35 AM

Congrats j76. We'll take it for sure. Some gobblers aren't much over 17lbs and the double beard will help make up for the spurs. Congrats again.

Agreed. We needed the score. Glad you got it done. The weather has been brutal all over all of a sudden.

mudchicken1012 04-19-2011 03:28 PM

congrats j76 its a gobbler .im still after them here trying again in am if my car dont break again and put me out for 2 days .got the sticker also .hope to help team score tommarow gl all who are still out.

kellyguinn 04-19-2011 04:02 PM

Congrats.. I'm with ya. If a jake would have stepped out I would have taken it as well.

Mottz 04-19-2011 05:07 PM

Very nice j!! A double beard is great. Remember this also. This is a team but its also personal. If you are happy with what you take, we will be happy for ya. At least you're not going on 5 weeks with nothing to show like this Mottz guy. We need that guy off the team:confused0024: I still have til the end of May so don't count me out quite yet. And good luck to everyone out there whos goin out!

Iowa Jaybird 04-19-2011 06:43 PM

Well we are one short. I checked on Gobbling Buck's posts, and evidently he doesn't know he's on this team. He thought after he was too late to be on team 13, he wasn't on another team. He had some computer problems. He has already shot a bird, and we could have used the score. I take it Signman is still with us?

j76 04-20-2011 04:23 AM

Jay, I have tried every possible way to contact Gobbling Buck and have heard nothing. Yes, Signman is still with us, I'll keep you guys updated if anything happens with him. He has till the end of the month to get it done and I know he will do his best. He could have popped a jake when i shot mine but held off for something bigger, hope it pays off for him!

Thanks for all the comments guys, thats by far the biggest jake i've ever shot...if that counts for anything.. I do know he will taste great and was an exciting hunt!! Signman did an excellent job of calling, he had the one hen fired right up and sounded exactly like her!!

Mottz, Kelly, and Mud, keep at em guys!!! I think the weather all over the country has been terrible this year and makes it real tough! My Dad will be up tomorrow and I'm gonna do my best to put him on his first bird. My Bro in-law is on team 4 and if he don't get it done by the weekend might try to get out with him next week and try to video a little bit.

Well we had thunder, lightening and snow last night!! lost power from 11pm till 7:30 this morn and now for some reason i have no water!! So I went from sittin in the sun Monday afternoon huntin turkeys to climbin into a crawlspace in a snow storm!! Sometimes life just aint fair!!! Well, I better get down there and see what kind of a mess i'm gettin myself into, wish me luck guys!!!

zubba 04-20-2011 05:35 AM

I will see if I can find a way to contact Gobbling Buck too.

My season opened today and I have until May 15th. Weather was crappy today, but should be nice tomorrow. Planning on heading out then. Hopefully the birds cooporate. Good luck everyone.

zubba 04-20-2011 05:39 AM

I believe Gobbling Buck's name is Jay Clement and here is his phone number: 205-280-3670. I will try to call him today. Has anyone tried this yet?

I got to shoot this big ole MO gobbler off my jake mobile decoy. It was one of the coolest hunts I have ever had. He weighed 25 lbs, 10 1/2" beard, and 1 1/8" spurs. Can't wait til next Monday to get back out there with DTC Jr.

j76 04-20-2011 07:05 AM

Awsome job DTC!!!!!!!! Congrats! That will really help the team score!!!!

I already called him...was kind of calling blind. A woman answered and I asked for Jay. He was gone. I said "I have kind of a weird question for you. Is Jay a avid deer and turkey hunter" She said "Oh yeah". I said, "Good, I think I have the right person then" LOL. I got to give him a call in about a half hour. Then I should hopefully have his bird statistics to add to the team. Will let you know what I find out.

zubba 04-20-2011 07:17 AM

Atta boy DTC. That is a dang nice gobbler. He will score nice. Congrats on a fine bird!

j76 04-20-2011 07:30 AM

Wow DTC Thats a hoss!!
Your score is 25 + 11.25 + 11.25 + 21 = 68.5
If I got it figured right with mine and DTC's That should put us in 3rd place....I think!
If Zubba can get Gobbling Buck on here we will really be jammin!!!

I start Sunday in Iowa, but the weather looks like it's going to suck. Looks like I'll be setting up a blind Saturday night for the first time in 2 years. I plan on hunting the same spot on private for the week season 3 and 4, and off to Kansas if I fill both tags.

Mottz 04-20-2011 05:22 PM

Awesome Job DTC!! Contest isn't over and we have plenty of time. Hope to hear some good news from you zubba. Good luck!!

I had a close call today. I'm working a few miles from my hunting spot and I knew I'd have some down time waiting at work so I decided to grab my gun. We drove by at 8 am and seen 2 toms and a hen in the field. Went to the job and about 11:30 broke away for a noon time hunt. Me and another guy walked in and seen these 3 in a lower pasture. 1 big tom for sure. So we tried doing a sneak and got pretty close but the creek was between us and them. Tried doing a back sneak and came up and they were gone. Ok, so it wasn't that close but it was exciting trying to get them wearing a tshirt and blue jeans. 1 good thing about this though. I know where they roost and now I know they don't stray too far away from it. So it was a good scouting trip none the less!

Iowa Jaybird 04-21-2011 03:19 AM

Sounds good Mottz. Sounds like we have a lot of hunters out in the next week. Hopefully we can have some good luck, and make a run in this contest.

j76 04-21-2011 04:36 AM

Well my dad will be up in a few hours with my little one, which means will have to wait for the wifey to get home befor we can do anything. Have a 120 acre cedar swamp we will go look at, it has a couple good toms that frequent the prop but they are really unpredictable. Been out there a bunch of times scouting and think i've got it narrowed down to a pretty small area where they seem to hang out, so tonite will be just pretty much a scouting trip for the morn. A good 6 in. of wet sloppy snow on the ground is gonna make it hard to find fresh sign but we will see. We only have a short break in the weather so it looks like are only chance will be tomorrow. Really want to see dad knock down his first gobbler but lookin like its gonna be an awful tough task to accomplish.
