We are looking to utilize the tillable land for income and the timber, of course, for harvesting mature bucks!!
I have always had the dream of owning my own piece of land and am now trying to make it a reality, save....save....and save some more!!
Why you ask Ron?? Any suggestions or tips??

Hunted this morning.....was quite the fiasco. Got out there and was getting partially dressed as usual when I realized I forgot my boots!! In a desperate attempt, I asked my dad if he would happen to have an extra pair but to no avail, I had to wear my slippers hunting this morning. Needless to say, my feet were a little cold and most of all, WET!! First off, I mentioned to my father that I always have trouble finding this tree stand the first time every year.....and sure enough, I had trouble. I ended up walking about 100 yards too far and had to back-track. Allthe while my feet getting more and more soaked in the dew-drenched grass. When I finally made the last 50 yard jaunt up the hillside and approached the stand, I set my scent lok facemask/hat combo on the first step until I got my bow hooked up and a couple things out of my pack. Of course, in all my thoughtfulness this particular morning, I left the hat/mask on the bottom step of my 20 foot climbing stick. So I now have cold, wet feet and my face sticking out like a sour thumb! Im not happy. As soon as I reach the top I get things adjusted in the tree, hoping for my luck to change. I prepare to put my leg in my scentblocker pants and here they come, a herd of deer come sauntering in under my tree, couldn't see them, but I knew they were deer. Right under my tree, but I couldn't make them out. So now, I must sit silently and let the, what sounded like, 8-10 deer pass under my tree and out of my world before I can attempt to achieve warmth!! After sun up, the action halted and I had no deer sighting until on the way back to the truck, a doe and yearling were feeding on the edge of the beans, and due to having basically socks on, very quiet footwear I might add, I was able to stalk into bow range, but really had no need for more venison. Was a very interesting morning, and oh yea to top things off, my dad, after I had warned him to stop leaning back so far, knocked my bow off the back of the atv while we were getting undressed and it bounced like a rubber ball off the nearly concrete soil!! No damage thankfully, and just thought I would share one of those mornings when nothing seemed to go right! Happy Hunting and don't forget your boots!!!

Wow that is what I call a a fiasco morning. lol Wet feet but at least you still had a chance to take a doe. You see more deer than I do these days. I would wear slippers if I could see that many.

Yea, a bad dayof huntingis better than a good day of work!! Cliche I know, but it was so fitting I couldn't resist!
I love the sport to much to not enjoy even the, seemingly, worst of days. Cold front is coming in middle of next week, so I had better get it together!

Ihave turned away from the idea of joining a club and have now focused my attention/budgeting on going in with my father and purchasing a farm. It is a real dream of mine to buy a farm and build a cabin style home on it by the time I am 35 years old. So far, after a lot of careful planning/budgeting and figuring, my father and I feel like we will be able to look into buyinga farm in about 5 years. Would be sooner if the next two years werent going to stall me, asthe wife andIhave to save for her new vehicle. How many of you own property?? Any tips??
I hope that within this 5 year time frame, the land prices will slip downward and will make the property that much more affordable. With falling cash crop prices this may be possible. Right now the land in my neck of the woods50% M/L tillableand 50% M/L timber sells anywhere from 3000-3500/acre. I am hoping that by the time we have saved the down payment+ about a 20% emergency fund, the prices will hopefully be down to 2000-2500/acre. Fingers are crossed! Wish me luck, and again, any tips or suggestions for me??

Brad,
I totally forgot what I was going to say, sorry.
This Saturday was a great day to say the least. It started out ok. I didn't forget my boots or anything so I had nice dry feet. Got up in the stand about an hour before daylight. First hour goes bye and nothing. Suddenly I hear a buck grunt from up in behind my sons stand. I get up and get ready. I can see my son and glass him to see him still sitting with the bow hanging. I was about to call him on the radio when I see this buck standing 10 yards beside him. The buck knew something wasn't right and keep on checking him out. Eventually the nerves got the better of him and he left there and worked his way to me. He came in from a difficult angle and when he got into a shooting lane, I pulled back, but couldn't get full draw. My back arm was being stopped by my saftey strap. I had to let him go. He was a big bodied 7 point. He looked very familiar to a 199 lbs. 9 point that was taken in that area 2 years ago. As soon as he left the area, about 10 minutes later I had a basket 6 point come in. He was a young deer so I left him cruise thru. As soon as he bounded out of sight, I heard another grunt, look to my right and see another buck (nice wide 6 point) coming in. He was headed for my son, but turned left and came to me. I drew back and waited. He stepped into the lane and damn if there wasn't some bush covering the lower portion of the vitals. I figured at 10 yards I can put it in the top of his lungs so I aimed a little high. Loosed the arrow and the buck dipped down. I watched my arrow skip of his back and sail in the ground. He turned and walked away. Not ten minutes later my son calls on the radio and said theres another buck 25 yards from you to the right. I look over and can't see him. There is a huge tall mess of grape vines and briars that go up about 20 feet and thick. He is on the other side and walks away. He was followed by two doe right after that. At about 10 a.m. I got down out of the tree, went over to make sure I didn't hit the buck. Arrow had only hair, no blood. I cleared out that bush as well as some other limbs that may cause some problems. I talked to some other guys that I hunt with in that area. The one guy said he saw over a dozen deer, one was the 7 point and another buck that made him look tiny. The other guy said he only saw 4 deer, but all four were buck and 2 of them were bruisers.

Wow Ron, what a morning, sounds like you had a blast! That's what its about, I don't measuremy personal success by kills, just the ability to get out there and enjoy the wild. Now don't get me wrong, I am aftertrophy bucks and am constantly obsessing about smacking one, but Ienjoy the hunt whether I see any or not, love to be out there!
Deer movement is peaking here now that we have finally got some cooler temperatures, so I will be out after them this weekend!
good luck guys!

Good pre-rut activity!Took my wife out yesterday morning and had a buck grunting behind us and does running around before first light. Saw several other deer late in the morning up on there feet as well. Good friend of mine saw a MONSTER buck chasing a doe and two other decent 3.5yo bucks all-out fightinglast night! So to say the least, I am excited about tonights hunt! Good luck everyone!

sounds like you had a good day. I hope your evening hunt was just as eventful. With the cooler temperatures, I hope we have a productive day like last week. We should be able to tell on the way there. If we see deer on the way there, then we usually see deer that day.
