RE: Official Team Bone Freaks Thread (3)
Brad,
I totally forgot what I was going to say, sorry.
This Saturday was a great day to say the least. It started out ok. I didn't forget my boots or anything so I had nice dry feet. Got up in the stand about an hour before daylight. First hour goes bye and nothing. Suddenly I hear a buck grunt from up in behind my sons stand. I get up and get ready. I can see my son and glass him to see him still sitting with the bow hanging. I was about to call him on the radio when I see this buck standing 10 yards beside him. The buck knew something wasn't right and keep on checking him out. Eventually the nerves got the better of him and he left there and worked his way to me. He came in from a difficult angle and when he got into a shooting lane, I pulled back, but couldn't get full draw. My back arm was being stopped by my saftey strap. I had to let him go. He was a big bodied 7 point. He looked very familiar to a 199 lbs. 9 point that was taken in that area 2 years ago. As soon as he left the area, about 10 minutes later I had a basket 6 point come in. He was a young deer so I left him cruise thru. As soon as he bounded out of sight, I heard another grunt, look to my right and see another buck (nice wide 6 point) coming in. He was headed for my son, but turned left and came to me. I drew back and waited. He stepped into the lane and damn if there wasn't some bush covering the lower portion of the vitals. I figured at 10 yards I can put it in the top of his lungs so I aimed a little high. Loosed the arrow and the buck dipped down. I watched my arrow skip of his back and sail in the ground. He turned and walked away. Not ten minutes later my son calls on the radio and said theres another buck 25 yards from you to the right. I look over and can't see him. There is a huge tall mess of grape vines and briars that go up about 20 feet and thick. He is on the other side and walks away. He was followed by two doe right after that. At about 10 a.m. I got down out of the tree, went over to make sure I didn't hit the buck. Arrow had only hair, no blood. I cleared out that bush as well as some other limbs that may cause some problems. I talked to some other guys that I hunt with in that area. The one guy said he saw over a dozen deer, one was the 7 point and another buck that made him look tiny. The other guy said he only saw 4 deer, but all four were buck and 2 of them were bruisers.
