Dang, cut by my own teammate! Thats OK the wife and kids make fun of me too when I dont score.
Here are afew old hasbeen pics, pre 85, back when most though a scrape was something a Turkey did to find some grub, the best week to take off for bowhunting was opening week, and a buck grunt was something you did with your wife.
The one on the left is a KY 8 and right is a MI 10. A good year. The 8 grossed 140 3/8 and net 136 6/8" the 10 looked good when I shot him but not so good when you added him up, short brows, long g2 on one side short one on the other side and so on throughout the rack. I would have shot him anyway, I dont care what they score, as long as their big:D

Another good year, 2 in 2 days, KY 9 & 8, the 8 grossed 139 1/8" net 136 3/8". I think this one and the 8 above were from the same stock, same property. Drove by the place when I was down this year, Now its a freaking Game club!

RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread

Jim, as far as deer hunting goes I have been lucky enough to live in some states that have great genetics and soil content and not so much hunting pressure. Hell I seen over 20 bucks ina bean field in Kansas and only one of them, a 6 pt, would not make P&Y minimum. Where I dont think I have seen that many here in the last 11 seasons total! Im not saying that living in a state that has great whitetails is a given, but it darn sure increases your odds!
My neighbor is 72 years old and still manages to tag 2 good bucks for our area most years with his bow,yet he does not have one that would make book. He is in my eyes a great deer hunter.
Im not sure, but I dont think Fred Bear had a Whitetail Buck that would make book! ;)

I may have lied to you all earlier when I said I would not lower my standards in the late season. It was 0 when I got out of the stand again yesterday and I think I would have shot the first 8pt that come along! Spooked deer going into the stand and seen nothing except Ice forming on my mustache! Man this has been a cold Dec.

Thanks Jim, I willgive them a shot. I picked up some Hot Hands at the store today to put in my boots and mitts. I have noticed over the last few years this getting older crap has some drawbacks!

RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread

Well Silver, next time you see a decent buck you will appreciate him all the more. When I go thru dry spells, and we all do, the first spike I see I get all rev'd up. Getting older is another term for getting wiser, in some cases lol.

I had 3 buckscome5 yards frommy stand tonight. I was not not paying attention (this is where the old age thing comes in play I think) and they popped out 10 yards in front of my from some pines and were trotting at a good clip single file. By the time I got my bow in my hand, checked to even see what kind of bucks they were and how many were coming they were by me and I had no shot. One was a real nice buck I would have loved to have taken.

Jim, I have to check into those heat wraps, never heard of them. Your package was shipped also FYI

bawanajim 12-15-2007 04:40 PM

RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread

I started with the wraps after back surgery they are great. If you are tent hunting high country they are great in a sleeping bag also. I even keep one in my pack for emergency's [IE] a night stuck in the woods.

Diesel , thanks

RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread

Well Dad and I went out Saturday AM with the Smoke-poles. I live in OHIO but had never before Gun hunted Ohio (usually go to PA with the guns) I see why, holy cow, wall to wall hunters!!!

Early Morning I saw 3 deer no shooting opportunities. I had 1 nice doe at 15 yards behind a blow down, all I could see was her face! She exited straightaway from me, offerring no shot! So now it's 11:00am I head over to where I put Dad. He hadn't seen a thing. You know how it is when you put someone on a stand, you'd rather they get action than you. He liked the area and definetly saw the potential and the Trails, Rubs etc. So as we stand there talking (we had to be out soon, as we had obligations in the early evening) We are just talking about how to get out and should we work a hicky or just walk out! When I see a Doe running our way. I say "DEER"! My gun is shouldered, as she crests the little bluff. Dad pulls up also. She is quartering towards us,hard. I have some saplings to contend with. Dadwhispers "take the shot". Kabloom!!!!!.. smoke fills the air! It clears in time to see her runnng acrossed the hill. Dad does not shoot. He says you hit her good..he didn't shoot cuz he thought she was going down. We talked about the shot and it turns outhe had a better angle and a clearer shot. I didn't know that, at the time, and given the chance I would have let her come down more broadside. But he assured me the hit was good. We walked over to the spot UH-Oh lots of white hair mixed with the brown, I'm afraid I was too low. We start tracking, Blood! lots of it. Should we give some time??? Man with all these hunters..we better stay on her. We cross the creek. Blood is flowing hard, Dad was gonna try and circle ahead I call him down. She can't be far now with this blood. We cross the creek go up a slight rise where I expect she'll be. She apparently laid down big blood pool. But our haste may have jumped her. We take a couple more steps and BOOM a shot just ahead of us. Another guy finished her off..We tracked right to where he shot her. No biggie we congradulated him andtold him our story. He said he could see she was hit and didn't want a wounded deer running around. We agreed, shook his hand, congradulated him again and left! Sigh A tad low indeed. It would have done the job. But a better shot would have made the whole ordeal a little better. A fun day..and the spot I put Dad was indeed a good one!

RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread

Sounds like a good experience with Pops either way GR8. Would have been niceif the father and son tag team could have recovered the Doe but some of the fun is seeing the deer, attempting the shot, the anticipation of walking up to the where the deer was and seeing if you can find blood, and the tracking, ahh the tracking. The tracking isthe second most exciting part to me beside knowing the deer you have decided to take, offers you a shot, is finding the blood trail and the anticipation of following the trail in hopes of seeing that familiar white belly, or brown back, ar antlers sticking up. Sounds like good times.

RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread

To make a short story long every year I buy a gravity wagon full of corn from a local farmer about 5000 lbs. And at the end of our rifle season I start feeding the deer behind my barn, there is a mercury light on the pole bringing power to the barn and I can watch them from my house.
Well after months of scouting pics and two early seasons with no sightings or pics of anything worthy I didn't have much hope to see any good bucks after the seasons ended either.
But of course you guessed it last night I was helping my neighbor from the "neighbor cam pics" when my wife text's me about a giant buck behind the barn.Yea right a giant I'm thinking "sure'. So I get home and no giant deer,no any deer. Well about two thirty I get up to wizz and put some wood on the fire but first I check for the "giant " deer & yep hes there and a giant as far as this area goes, main frame 10 point very clean maybe 22-23 inches wide.
Where the hell he came from I don't have a clue but he was chasing a couple of doe fawns all over.
I will try for pics and with any luck some sheds.:)

Late season Flintlock Jim ???

bawanajim 12-19-2007 11:32 AM

RE: 10 - Official Team Germ Warfare Thread

I won't shoot him now. I feel after six weeks of bow season and two weeks of rifle he gets a free ride till next season. I will keep an eye on him and learn all I can, shed hunting I find invaluable at patterning a buck,if I can find his I will be as happy as if I shot him.:)

This corn thing is why I am so adamantly against baiting, one week of corn & I could set up 200 yds away and smack him tonight, its just not right and the deer deserve more. He is a great buck for my area and apparently by not killing all of my doe I have made him quite content to live here ,at least for a while. ;)

If any of you are interested in my property PM me and I will give you the area to look at on goggle earth.

Well I watched the buck for about an hour last night,I,m thinking 3.5 year old ,doesn't have much belly. g2's &g3's are both about 9-10 inches g4's are short3.5-4.5 maybe. His spread is impressive, 1.5 - 2.0 inches on each of the inside past his ears.:)

I am working on pics.

This buck next year will be a slammer.

I love owls too.. We had aMounted Great Horned Owl when I was a kid. (actually we had 2 one might still be on display at the Pittsburgh Zoo) Yeah it was illegal then too...hence the display, long story. (Bare in mind as a Youngster Dad didn't have anyone to teach him how or what to hunt, different times indeed!)

My grand father had a pole trap over his chicken coop ,as a kid I lived to get up in the morning to check for great horned owls.
They are far more plentiful than many believe. He hated them and wood chucks. But I really think he did more harm trying to kill them with an old single shot 12 gauge then either of them ever did to the farm.[:o]

I'm with you on the team also , I've had a great time.

It has been fun,and for you guys with youngun's its a very special time. There's just something about kids and Christmas that make everything else pale in comparison.

Bob are you and your father hunting over here in muzzle loader season? If so take a look on the west side of 60 south of 80 a couple of miles there were many standing corn fields, might be a place for a quick afternoon doe hunt. GOOD LUCK.:)

Andy The best of luck with your new projects I will be in touch.;)

Its been a while since we've heard from a few of youteam members I hope all is well. And Good luck late season.

I wish you alla Merry Christmas and the best New Year ever.

I've had a great time once again with yet another year of awesome company! Everyone be sure to stay in touch and I wish you all a wonderfull holiday season.

After polishing until my hands look like they've aged 50yrs the workbench is taking on a great look. Long story short, if you ever buy copper for this sort of thing. Hand pick it or you may end up with the top sheetof the stack which meens it's been rained on and beat up by what I can only guess is ratchet strap windmarks. Hell the underside was beautiful butwhen you buy from a roofing company who's soleidea of copper is gutters and the underside is what you see, I guess It's my fault for not pointing out the obvious.[8D]

Guys, I have also enjoyed it and I apologize for not being the best teammate this year. Although I haven't been on here as much as I should, I promise the dedication in the field was not lacking. I put in many hours in the stand, when I had the time off, but that is why they call it hunting. I haven't given up completely, I get off work the 26th, giving me 5 days to try and get one down with the bow. I will try my best to get something on the board for us.

I also want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and have a safe and happy holiday break.

Just thought I would share a couple more pics with you guys that I took from the bow stand:

Guys, its been a blast, seriously. I will miss the daily and weekly comradery with some of you guys and hope we all stay in touch. This is only for fun and no explanations needed as any one of us on any given day could have taken the trophy of a lifetime, the main thing is we hunted as a team and had fun doing it. I learned a bunch from you guys.

Well Guys Im as guilty as anyone for not posting regular, (and for that I apologize) But Im not done yet, I still have a few stories to tell :D.

What I would like to do is not only thank Bob, Andy and Jim for their many posts and pictures making a great base for the team thread, but the rest of the team as well for taking time to share their stories and families withs us throughout the season.

Oh Andy, If you ever do get to come this way to Bird hunt with me you might have to come all the way to Kansas, looks like thats where were going to be spending our hunting seasons from now on, Great Pheasant, Quail, and Prairie Chicken Hunting!

M&M looks like that deer rack might have caught the head while you were rubbing that bench! The room looks great.

Awesome pictures Millertime.

I wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and Safe Holiday Season :D

i havent been posting as much here recently, mainly because ive been busy. duck hunting and a few bow hunts occupies my time now. deer sightings have fallen alot for me since rifle season (obviously) and i wouldnt bet on me getting a deer but you never know, ill still be heading out, with does as my main target this time. been holding off for the colder weather after rut, now that its here i wanna stick a deer.

you guys have been great and i enjoyed reading the stories if nothing else. If any of you are ever in KY hit me up to shoot some bull or for some decent hunting and fishing action.

i cant help but dream of spring at this point. I wanna smack down some birds already, and it aint even 08 yet[8D]
