WAY TO GO MAN!!!
NOW JUST ARROW HIM!!!!;) |
RE: 5-Official Team Rut Hounds Thread
Well, I decided to give rattling another try yesterday, and boy was it working! I rattled in 4 different bucks that I could have easily put an arrow through. Unfortuniately, none of them were any of the big boys I was after. It didn't help that the neighbor was riding through the woods on his quad most of the day![:@] I am pumped to get back out there Thursday morning! Anybody else having any luck? Good luck guys!!

ORIGINAL: mnhuntr_82 we have our work cut out for us, one team has 638 7/8 inches. that is impressive. good luck team 3 good bucks will put us right up there so it is far from over yet . :D The army of orange has been running a muck in my hunting spots but they haven't gotten many of the bigbucks. That season ends this Sunday !! ![]() I don't know if we will eventry bow hunting much until it is over. Just too open here to be hiding in the cattails with all the rifles banging away. Our area has seen a lot of pressure. Late season is a great time to hunt as the bucks are feeding heavy after the main rut. Throw in some cold/snow and we probably will see our best bowhunting of the year. I am looking forward to seeing the crowds going home for another year so we can finally hunt in peace.Tyler and I havebeen running around gaining permission from more land owners for late season bowhunting since we haven't been hunting much. So far no one has said no. :DThings are looking up for us. Brett Good luck on hammering a big boy. Sounds like it is only a matter of time for you!! Shane Good luck on your late season. Find the major food sources but huntthe staging areasclose to the bedding areas if possible.A guy will have to hunt smart now once themain rut starts winding down. While there still will be a few does and fawns being bred... the big boysmainly will be concentrating on filling their stomaches and surviving in December. Rut hounds Now that a guy isputting more clothes on to stay warm... make sure you practice withall your gear on.Check your bows over good and all your other gear. We beendoing just that while we wait for therifles huntersto go home. Also just a reminder. When we kill our bucks... the buck, you and your bow needs to be in the picture. Be safe and good luck!! RE: 5-Official Team Rut Hounds Thread
It does seem to be just a matter of time. On a high note, I usually see deer running around at night, but lately I haven't seen many. I'm hoping this means that they are only moving during the day right now. We are having a nice temperature drop today/tomorrow, so I'm hoping they should be moving pretty good tomorrow morning! I only have until about 11am to hunt tomorrow, so I want to make it count! Friday they are having an antlerless season that runs through Sunday. I can bowhunt durring that time. I'm hoping it won't come down to hunting for the biggin after Thursday! All I know is I'm going to try and hit it hard this weekend until I get what I want!
Tim, Sunday will have come and gone before you know it! You made a good point about checking your gear and practicing. I've been trying to practice a few times a week when possible with my gear on. I personally don't notice any difference in my shooting, but it's good to practice. Everyone... I think we are going to put up some numbers this weekend! Lets get it done! Brett |
RE: 5-Official Team Rut Hounds Thread

RE: 5-Official Team Rut Hounds Thread
Just got a call from Mom. Her and dad were out in the driveway, and my monster walked through the yard and went down in the woods in the direction of my stand!! I think I am starting to feel a cold coming on!! I might need to go home sick!! :D

RE: 5-Official Team Rut Hounds Thread
After sitting home all day today, I can't take not hunting. The hell with the rifle hunters. Got the next 3 days off and even though it will be a zoo around here with a lot of desperate rifle hunters ( last weekend ), we will be bowhunting. Can't kill them if you are sitting on the couch.
Tomorrow morning I will sit out in the open on a knoll so Tyler can hide in the low ground ( cattails ). That should keep the rifle hunters from taking pop shots in his directionsince they shouldsee me. A lot of road hunters in that area !! Not much for cover for me but is do-able. Least Tyler will get some good hunting in if nothing else. Got a game plan for the afternoon. The spot is decent for smaller to fairbucks. Take a gamble thatthe drive hunters will push in something bigger during the afternoon. It was pounded hard last weekend but no one should have been in there since. Good luck guys!! Tim |
RE: 5-Official Team Rut Hounds Thread
Good luck Tim! Hopefully you will get it done! I took today off from hunting after not seeing a thing from 6-11 on thursday and not seeing anything 6-noon and 2:30-dark yesterday. Full moon you know!! I just can't compete with a full moon! I have 2 new employees starting this week that I have to train, but I am going to try to take a day off on maybe thursday or friday. Shotgunners start running around on Saturday. I am also going to try to do some sitting from 3:45 till dark any of the other days. Hopefully something will work out. I have been seeing buttloads of deer after dark though! I was counting on antlerless hunters kicking some deer up yesterday, but I don't think anybody was doing that in the area! It sucks getting skunked 2 days in a row! It kind of makes you discouraged! Good luck everyone else!

Hang in there!! We are just having the time of our lives too. Thank God the rifles are done as of tomorrow night. Real fun getting pinned in a spot this afternoon by some slob that thinks he can drive off the roads and sit on a hill 1/4 mile away. First time in my life, I hoped the deer didn't start moving. Not sure if we will go out in the morning or not. Might just go for a drive and be a pain in the a$$ to the illegalroad hunters that are banging away in one of the boss's fields.I've got a date with Cabelas in the afternoon. The wife is going along to keep me from breaking us before xmas!! :D Need to pick up some pac boots for Tyler and I. Tyler also needs some insulated bibs and few other smaller items. Going to be getting cold now and we need to get everything in order for winter hunting. For now it looks like we won't hunt til next weekend. Muzzle loader season starts next weekend but that season is mild compared to the General Season. Hopefully the deer will be moving again. Tim |
RE: 5-Official Team Rut Hounds Thread
my deer woods has gone down the tubs. gun season pushed the deer out of there for the most part. work has made my bowhunting almost nonexisting. I'm going out tonight but don't expect to see a single deer. it skinks.

Not yet. Right now we are back to scouting/hunting to figure out the aftermath of rifle season. We went out last night in the wind and snow. Layered to the hilt and the wind still goes right through you. [&:] Figured one area out but the wind isn't right for it today. I am still thinking our best bow hunting is yet to come. Just need that wind to slack up a bit and get more scouting in to get the most out of it. Any more sightings on your big buck ?? Tim |

Bailey
Go get that Beast !! Post pictures when you get him !! I've got all of next week off so I will be hunting hard !! Scored big on getting permission from a certainlandowner. We usually justshed hunt his land but he wants more deer thinned out then what they were able to do. Lucky us !!! He has some good bucks roaming his land. I've got one more landowner to hit up. He usually lets us on after the General Season and Muzzle Loading Season ends, which they have. Even if he would say no, we are setting great. Looking forward to giving it heck !! Best of luck to anyone still hunting. Tim |
RE: 5-Official Team Rut Hounds Thread
Good luck to you Tim and Pat! I have been kind of laying low lately. Bow opened back up on Monday, but I haven't had a chance to go out yet! I did go out shotgun hunting first season on a different property and got completely skunked. It was a common theme for Iowa hunters durring gun season this year. They are giving us another chance to fill unused tags this weekend, so I am going to try and fill mine. Then I will be back out with my bow. I am going to be off from work starting the 22nd, and I am not going back until the 2nd! I've got some business to attend to in the woods! 3 tags to fill counting the gun tag!! I will get it done!

Good luck on filling your tag this weekend. It is nice having time off from work to hunt. This year has been so messed up for bowhunting. [:'(] Nice weather when we work...hot/muggy,rainy/ windy andnow cold/windyon days off just making it miserable.Nothing to do but tough it out though. Hopefully we catch a break over the next week. Good luck bowhunting !! Tim |
RE: 5-Official Team Rut Hounds Thread
I found a spot out of the wind today ( old abandoned farmstead/big shelter belt). Enough trees to do some still hunting. Snow was noisey!! Take a short step, slowly settle your weightand wait a couple minutes to take another. Saw seven deer. Had a very small doe at 15 yards. She was a runt but too long faced to be a big fawn. Had a doe and fawn at 30 - 35 yards but no shot at the doe.A forky come by twice around 20 yards. He just wanted to die.
Tomorrow is suppose to be real nasty with the wind. I might just go out in the morning and still hunt another farmstead that isn't abandoned.A big, fairly thicktree shelterbelt runs all around the farmstead. Deer might just hang up in there with the 20 -30 mph wind tomorrow. Normally the deer romp around in there just during night and head out of it before light. Might get lucky and be able to use this wind to my advantage. Got relatives stopping in so will skip hunting in the afternoon. Monday morning is suppose to becold but the wind finally dies a bit. I'll be huntingthat morning and trying to weenie a hunt in the afternoon. With my oldest daughter andthe wife's folks coming overthat morningfor a xmas get together, I am hoping to sneak out late afternoon. Tim |

The season is over for me. Even had a big buck rub it in tonight. He didn't come in till dark when I was leaving. Wind wasn't right to stalk him before dark. Sat and watched him for 45 minutes trying to " will " him in but no cigar. LOL
Yesterday I pulled a stellar stalk on a doe. Got to 20 yards but no shot at her vitals. She turned and headed into the cattails and ended the game. It was a good but stressful season. Seen quite a fewbig bucks but just couldn't get them in bow range. Deer Movement was very good but were tough to pattern as they were constantly changing how they moved through an area. Wind was constantly switching. That one made it the toughest with tonight being no exception. [:@] Funny how you have to aboutbeat the1.5 - 3.5 year oldbucksoff with a stick but can't get a shot at a big buck. [&:] Some day I hope to get good at it. This wasn't the year though !! [:o] Tim |
