RE: 5-Official Team Rut Hounds Thread

That is how my afternoon hunt went!!!! I couldn't get down in the spot I wanted to huntwith the wind. Watched a 135 - 140 class 4pt be king on the hill with 5 does/fawns in that spot. Tried rattling, grunting and the " can "to no avail. Got the does attention but the weeny wouldn't budge !!!

Had a doe and fawn sneak behind and offer no shot.

Then if fate wasn't stabbing me in the back enough... I ran into the Big 5pt on the walk out. He was chasing a doe and and the chase took them 20 some yards from my parkedtruck and then 25 yards from me. It was too dark to shot. The kicker was I talked myself out of bailing outof my hunting spot earlyeven though it was pretty dead. Boy do I regret that!! He sure looked awesome when he skylined himself 40 yards from me and stood broadsideso pretty for 20 seconds until the chase was on again with the doe. If I had gotten back10 minutes earlier !! [:@] [&:] He is a150 class buck and the one I passed onlast year. The 4pt actually had a bigger body but both bucks were good sized.

Hopefully tomorrow goes better!!

Tim

Good luck Tim on tomorrows hunt! Sounds like your right in the middle of the action. Cold out that way? Kinda warm here. I snuck into a ground blind tonight and rattled. The only thing I saw was a cow and calf elk. No whitetails..

Troy

Was a perfect day as far as temps. 20 this morning and a high of low 30's. Tomorrow it warms up a bit. Mid 20's for lows and mid 40's for highs.

We are going to gang up on the two bucks in the afternoon. I will be able to get in to my spot early afternoon. Probablyhead in about 1 PM. Got a lot of crawling to do to get into the spot. After school, Tyler is going to hunt right off the road ( 50 yards ) in a cattail slough they skirt and tryto catch the big 5 after hecrosses the road. Bunch of does hanging on the north side of the road ( probably the buck's core area )that crossinto the boss's disked cornfield. I want a better look at the big 4pt and to see what else is roaming that area.

Wind is wrong for the big bodied brute in the morning. Going to hunt another area where the narrow, massive, high side 5pt calls home. Haven't been in that area at all yet. May be in for a surprise and will be interesting to see what else is running around there. Was hoping the neighbor's got there corn off as it would be a real hot spot. As of yesterday they hadn't... hopefully they made some progress today. This spot is the only major bedding area in the big chunk of acres once that corn is gone.

2.5 days tell the lead starts flying... got to get it done!!! The pressure is on!! :D

The high, massive, narrow 5pt you saw. Not sure if Tyler showed youhis sheds or not from 2 years ago. They went 60 and 58. I dig a picture or two up if I can real fast. The other ones no... we didn't scout those areas this summer and don't have any sheds to them that I know of.

Brett

I wished they would fall in my lap!! Had the big 4 pt at 75 yards . He was trailing a doe and fawn. They went into a draw. The doe and fawn came out but keep looking back. Must have been another doe in there I missed seeing going inas he didn't come out. I pushed it as much as I could but there is no cover to get in the draw to hunt it. Will move on to another area. Too bad ashe is a good buck for a 4 pt. I would let the air out of him in a heart beat. He is in the 140 range.

Tyler hunt was a bust also.

Well the morning hunt was good except for the wind swirling on me. Had two bucks go by but not what I hoped for. Was a good spot as the does were going by also. I was hoping Mr Big would show up following onebut no cigar.

I had a doe get behind me but couldn't turn for a shot. Just too noisey and she was standing broadside well under 15 yards. The wind was swirling about and I got lucky she didn't catch me. Then another doe and two fawns come in. Theyheaded right at me. The little patch of crap I was hiding in was pathetic at best but the spot to be. At roughly 12 yards, I knew I was dead so I drew back very slowly andmanaged not toget busted. At 6 yards the wind hit my back and her nose shot up. I needed her to take one more step to get a good shot. She took the step and I let her have it. Love those shotchip shots!! :D

She dropped in sight. Waited a couple minutes then went out to check her. Ducked in another spot that was a bit more favorable for the damn wind. Was hardly 5 minutes and a young buck came in. He stopped and checked the dead doe out for a couple minutes then walked by under 10 yards. Why it couldn't have been a big buck. [:@] Ended up seeing another 3 bucks not in range but not what I wanted anyways. Very good buck movement this morning.

Here's the doe...

Nice doe Tim, it's just a matter of time before one of the big boys makes a mistake ;).

I'm heading home this weekend to get one last hunt in before our regular season opens. With a cold front moving in and the rut starting to heat up, the combo should make for a good weekend. Hopefully I can put one on the ground for Team 5! I'll keep you guys updated. Best of luck to the rest of you guys!

Shane, congrats on getting yourself a doe!

Patrick, thats a nice looking Tom you got there! Congrats!

My weekend of hunting was a bust!! I got out on Saturday morning with a dang hangover[:@], but I was sure that I was going to get out there!! Saw a small 2x2 early that stuck around for about 25 minutes. Durring this time, I saw the nice buck I have been after chasing a doe! They were both in full sprint! Once the 2x2left the area, I decided to sneak back to my stand that is in the deepest part of the woods. That was the direction that the buck and doe went anyway. With they still being some frost on the ground, the leaves were very quiet, so I didn't hardly make a sound. I climbed into the stand, and not 2 minutes after that, I started hearing grunts. It was a decent buck that was walking in my direction about 70 yards out. He got behind a tree, and I never saw him again. It was like he disappeared!! Ended up getting back ahead of the 2x2 and he stuck around for about 5 minutes again! Saw 1 more doe, and that was it before I had to climb down and go to work. Didn't have a deer in range except for the 2x2! Sunday I could only sit till 9 because I had to go to a sporting clays shoot. Didn't see jack!! On monday I went to my other hunting spot and was on stand by 12:15. Sat until dark, and didn't see a thing!! I'm getting a little frustrated!! I just need a good doe to walk in front of me so I can at least whack something!! I am pretty much out of deer meat!!!

Good luck everyone!

Brett,

Dont get too down on yourself. I kinda know how ur feeling right now, went out 2 days last week which are is usually the best time to go out and didnt see a single deer either of the days. I was beginning to wonder what the heck is goin on. I believe the luck will change though, just keep hunting hard for that big one.

Well, I am already planning my late season strategy. I still have confidence on getting one of these nice bucks that are around. The areas I hunt are bow only, no guns at all. Will be a good spot to hit ince the shotguns start going off! Best of luck to the rest of you. Lets get it done!!

Well, after this mornings hunt, I am faithful again! I saw a variation of bucks and does, 10 total. I saw the biggest buck that I have ever seen on my parents property. He was a tall what looked to be 11 point. I try to just look at the rack once and see if it looks like a shooterand just focus on the deer after that. This way Idon't get shakey! He was within 20 yards but he never offered a shot. I was a little dissappointed, but at least he had no idea that I was there. I'm praying that he will be back again tomorrow morning. Whats the likelyness of this? I don't know. I noticed a scrape that every buck that I saw today checked out, so I'm guessing he could be back tomorrow. Good luck everyone else!!

Brett
