RE: 27-Official Team 27 Thread
I promise to keep the team posted on what is happening with the hunting as much as possible. It looks like I might be losing my main hunting area. This landowner has let me hunt for two years and he owns 7040 acres and has, with neighbors , another land locked 7000 acres more of public land. Unfortunately his land is for sale. There has been numerous mule deer been taken in this area that score around 180 to 200 inches. It will suck if he sells it because I'll be forced to look for more land.

RE: 27-Official Team 27 Thread
That stinks that you might be loosing access to that land. Be sure to take a monster this year!

Glad your all onboard randyshunting. Sucks that you could be out a spot so close to the season, but hopefully it will all work out for you. Good luck, and what Fergus said shoot a monster.

RE: 27-Official Team 27 Thread
Update---I have seen a few posts with team avatars on our thread. I have a few of the other HNI members making up a few for us. They have told me that we should have them in the next few days. Soon as I see them we can pick one as a team!!!

RE: 27- Official Team 27 thread
Any of yall gonna make us a cool team "avatar" to put under our names at the side?
Surely someone who demonstrates deer killin skills can also demonstrate some Photoshop skills as well...;) |

I think you might be onto something. I can think ofseveral guys that you should ban before they get a chance to take some big bucks!

RE: 27- Official Team 27 thread
Simply brilliant, ideas like this are why you are captain!!Not that we have any competition:D I would just not like to get the hopes up of people on other teams. We should start reporting pics of big bucks on cameras to the mods so FroMan can start the procedures in motion to get them banned. We can say it caused "emotional distress". Chris |
RE: 27- Official Team 27 thread
I am really starting to get fired up for my trip to the Big Horn mountains. The field tips have been replaced by Muzzy 100 grain broadheads and the practicing with them has started. Thursday the 30th is the big day to head out. That will give me a day to scout before the real fun begins. I wont shoot at anything that scores under 150. If I need to I'll stay longer to try to get a bigger buck. Shooting a smaller buck just for a score isnt going to happen.
Team 27 is going to be a top contender this year!!! |
RE: 27- Official Team 27 thread
I like the way that you think randyshunting. shoot a a buck that is not mature is not being a very good hunting. Even though this is my first year of hunting with a bow I will try not to take a buck that is under three years old. I go the same way with turkey hunting I wont shoot a jake.
|
RE: 27- Official Team 27 thread
I like the way you think Hick I have no doubt you will shoot some fine bucks because it seems you have the dedication, skills, attitude and instincts.
I do however have to disagree about not being a very good hunter for taking bucks under 3, I will try to explain the best of my ability(limited). I consider myself a "good" hunter not "great", but "good". I have taken one buck over 3yrs and had several within range or borderline, but decided not to shoot because of no shot, bad angle, low light or on the fringe of my comfort zone. I can find deer, set up on deer, make the shot and track. I am very concious of the outdoors, put the hours into scouting and practice enough to group grapefruit size groups at 30yds. I shoot equiptment that performs for me, keepmy broadheadssharp and am very scent concious. Here is the part where it gets hard to explain. I usually shoot a buck and a doe each year (foratleast the last 10yrs anyways), now remember I said I've only shot one deer over 3yrs. I've shotanything from a fork to an eight in those years. The years I've shot smaller deer I have passed up bigger???? Shot the fork and had passed up a 7 and 8 that were only2 1/2yrs and chip shots. Don't know why except sometimes a deer catches my interest and I just think this is the one I want. This next sentence isn't meant to sound mean or disrespectful to what your opinion is so please don't think I am beinga jerk. I don't care what people think about me or my hunting style or preferences. They are my tags (we get 2 + doe permits), time, money, and decisions. I hunt for me, it is my passion and my relaxation. I hunt whenever I can in almost any conditions. I guess what I am trying to say is that I have never shot a deer that I regret shooting so if I am happy with it so be it. I always get upset when someone degrades someone for shooting a "smaller" deer especially younger hunters. I think what if they were as proud as a peacock when telling their story and posting the pic and get replies that take away from their accomplishment and turn them away from this great sport?? I am holding out for a "trophy" on the federal hunt this year and next year in MN, the last time in MN I let some smaller bucks go and went home empty. Sorry for the rambling and vent, but I thought I needed to express my hunting style because others may be kinda like this. Again, I hope I didn't come off as rude becauseI didn't mean to. I really do like your expectations and goals. You have a great future in huntingand I hope you takethe biggest deer of your life this year for the contest:D Chris |
RE: 27- Official Team 27 thread
Well, it looks like I will be able to get a 2 week jump on the season. My original plans were for the Illinois opener on October 1st. Thanks to another HNI member I might now have access to some land in Wisconsin. Thus giving me a September 15th start!!!

|
RE: 27- Official Team 27 thread
Hicks--- Glad to hear that you got your bow fixed. Good luck on your 3D shoot.
|
RE: 27- Official Team 27 thread
guys I'm leaving for caribou tonight - be gone 12 days or so - I won't be checking in for a while
my thoughts on deer hunting differ from ya'lls a bit first off, your personal choice of weapon really influences how you hunt, from the way you hunt all the way through to the size of bucks you set your goals on. Don't beleive me ? Take an osage stave and make a bow from it, pracitce all summer with cedar arrows going 160 feet per second and then try to go out and shoot a 4 1/2 year old buck or older as opposed to the same hunt with a rifle instead. Huge difference. Also, shooting one of the bigger bucks onprivate property in Ohio will get you a 160-170+ buck, shooting the biggest buck in the woods on public land in northern Mississippi might get you a 125" buck. Both trophies mind you, but the scores aint going to be the same |

RE: 27- Official Team 27 thread
Well I laidmy Hoyt toresttonight. I went to the bowshop which was my first mistake. Picked up a Bowtech Tribute and decided to run a few arrows through it. Ended up swithing everything over from my Hoyt to it before it was over. Now just have to explain to my wife why I spent so much $$$.$$ on a new bow when I just picked up the Hoyt last year.I will let everyone know how it shoots after this weekend when I wax a 160 inch velvet buck in KY. If it goes a couple weeks and you guys don't hear from me its because I trained my wife to well with the new 223 I bought her and she didnt agree with tonights purchase.
|
RE: 27- Official Team 27 thread
Congrats on the new purchase ray. Sorry to see that we lost another Hoyt shooter. I am sure that you will be back though!!!
Good luck with your KY hunt. Get us on the board with a monster. 2 teams have posted so far with a 120 & 119. |
RE: 27- Official Team 27 thread
What model hoyt? Trade it in or for sale?
|
RE: 27- Official Team 27 thread
It won't make a difference. If you don't have the shooting skills the bow won't make a difference!!! LOL Maybe I will send you my bow!!! I will give you a good price. I will only mark it up 25% over what I paid!

RE: 27- Official Team 27 thread
Do we have any mathews shooters on our team. I still shoot the MQ1. I've been using it for years and it works great so I dont see any need for a change.
|
RE: 27- Official Team 27 thread
Not sure if we have any other Mathews shooters.
I am a Hoyt Vectrix shooter with my backup being a PSE. |
RE: 27- Official Team 27 thread
It was a Hoyt Ultra Sport. It was only a year old and I sold it to my Brother-In-Law for $200. He got a good deal!
ORIGINAL: FRALEY What model hoyt? Trade it in or for sale? |
RE: 27- Official Team 27 thread
Must be nice to have a brother-in-law that you like. If mine wanted it I would have sold it for a profit!!!
|
RE: 27- Official Team 27 thread
Im shooting a good ol' fred bear and works great and I will not sell it in til I need a high pound bow.
|
RE: 27- Official Team 27 thread
Just touchin base. Very nice Avatar for sure. I am busy editing Hog Bowhunting footage for a DVD I have been in the process of making over the past 3 years. Couple other bowhunting Video jobs as well.
Anyway, I'm all set for the in city Doe only Bowhunting starting Sept. 15th for me. Regular season is Oct. 1st. I killed a hog in June in Oklahoma & qualified for the in cityBowhuntso I know my tackle is operating just fine. It's the NUT behind thebowI worry about. I'll be using my Darton (Dartons since the 70s) & Easton Aluminums tipped with Rocky Mountain Ironheads-been using the Rocky Mountains since they came on the market in the 70s also. Good stuff, no need to change though I do experiment on occassion. Guess thats it fellas. I will try to keep checked in to see what's going on. Who has the earliest season opener on our team?Iowa is Oct. 1st.. |
RE: 27- Official Team 27 thread
I was all set for an October 1st opener but it now looks like I will be able to take advantage of the Sept 15 opener for Wisconsin!

RE: 27- Official Team 27 thread
Big Horn mountains season starts the Saturday and South Dakotas archery season starts September 22nd. I drove to an area where I've seen some big bucks and as soon as I got there, in this creek bottom, there was another HUGE whitetail buck. I'm working on trying to get permission to hunt there but so far no luck.
|
RE: 27- Official Team 27 thread
Good luck. That would be awsome to land a huge buck your first season on a new spot!
