Dave,
Great job on the doe. :) Good luck on getting that smasher buck. Take care, Brian |
RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
Not much going on in my last outing Monday morning, but tonight was "interesting". I set up early afternoon in a deep woods oak flat - whiteoaks are just starting to drop around here. Around sunset, I heard deer approaching in dense understory and could barelymake outa racked buck scavenging acorns in the thicket about thirty yds away. I could hear another deer walking in the vicinity, but could not make him out. I wasn't too excited about the first buck until he fed away into a small opening and I could see good mass and a rack beyond the ears, holy cow! Unfortunately he left the area, but definitely an adult buck -- his companion got within ~25 yds, but stayed in the dense thicket and left to join his buddy - I could see thathe was branched, but could not tell if it was the other buck's grandson or granddad... that adrenaline rush iswhy we keep coming back for more, lol.

Hey guys,
Just wondering how everyone season is going. Our season opener is on Saturday and I have plans for a morning hunt, not real sure about the afternoon yet. Can't wait, I'm ready to go. Take care, Brian |
RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
I've been out almost every day in spite of the heat. Deer for the most part are hitting white oak acorns - nice becausenot all white oaks areproducing this fall. I'veseen two more mature bucks show up in acorn flats, but neither was a shooter - and I never had a shot opportunity anyway. I huntedEAB TDM property for the first time yesterday, just 2 does and 2 fawns passed~100 yds away.
Good luck on your opener Brian, let us know how it went. At least the cold front will have done its job.;) fsh |
RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
The season here in SD started last weekend. Temps have been pretty warm and extremely windy. Im not a big fan of being 20 plus feet up a tree with 35mph winds and super warm temps. So I havent been able to go out yet. I did see a really nice buck about 400yds from the trees my stand is in feeding in a picked corn field. Im still waiting for the cornfield next to my stand to be combined. Good luck everyone!!

RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
Well guys sorry to say no blood was drawn by me, but on saturday afternoon my buddy I was hunting with shot a good sized doe so with the weather rather warm I decided to help him with the gutting and dragging out process.
I also checked my game cameras over the weekend and here are a few pictures I got. I was pleasantly suprised with the bucks we filmed especially for heavily pressured areas I hunt. Hopefully I can score on one soon.[8D] Enjoy, stay safe and good luck. Brian ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
Brian
good luck on the buck, he looks nice. I am still out there most days... got busted sitting down on the stand Tues morning after an early morning stretch by an unseen deer, oh well. I hope it wasn't "him". I have been after two absolute monster deer when the wind is right - I'll be after one of them tomorrow am if the forecast holds... -fsh |
RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
Hey guys how is everyone doing? I havent been able to post much, I have been working/hunting hard. Haven't came across any monsters yet but just put a stand up in a new property and there are deer EVERYWHERE so we will see how it works out.

RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
I went 1 time and seen 2 does and a fawn. Not a good excuse but it is hot. I got up Sat. morning and went for a ride and seen a good 8-10 pointer cross the road. Looked in the 130"-140" range depends on if he is an 8 or 10. I also got this pic of a weird deer is it a buck or doe? Good luck everyone. Waldo

RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
Went out this morning and dropped my first doe of the year at 8am. She ran about 50 yards. It felt good to let that arrow fly!

RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
Hey guys, I got a doe (fawn) this afternoon.Ixx-lunged heron a 17 yd shot, and shewent only 30yds before Iwatched her pile up. More importantly, I shot her on the Navy Base, so my "earn-a-buck" doe is now out of the way there - I'veseen a fewvery nice bucks in the past few weeks. We had a cold front go through last night, and deer were moving well...

RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
I went this morning and it was a bad morning!!! I got to my tree, get ready to go up and nothing is there. Someone stole steps andstand. Thisis on public landand I am tired of going to a tree and everything is gone. It was a cheap stand but it still pisses me off.I just sat back on a pit dump and seen a doe and fawn. It was a cool morningand it still felt good to be out there. Waldo

RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
Tough break Waldo, too many lowlife's out there...
My hunting partner and I have been using decoys, here are a few pics from yesterday's hunt. The bad part was the three racked bucks that came into the field and stared at us while we were setting up. It wasn't all that bad as two of the 8'ers (non-shooters) did come back into the far part of the field after sunset - they just wouldn't approach our position. A 3 ptr did comeup to the decoy pair from the woods, stomped a few times and departed. A lone doe also didn't care for the early breeding going on... lol. My partner sat over the pair: ![]() I sat about 60 yds away from my partner with a bobble head buck (22 yds away from me, I am up ~20 ft)looking at the pair (very windy, that bobble head was doing its trick): ![]() (If you notice the cages andbit of fluorescent orange -- two of the threeEdward Fort trophy pears I planted on the field edge last Feb; this is going to be a great setup). The Experiment continues... -fsh |
RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
Neat pics and good luck. I finally got another good buck on camera. No monster put a good mature deer. Waldo
|
RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
We finally had a mature buck come intoour mating decoy pair this afternoon, it was kind of neat to watchthebuck'sreaction. He approached the pair with ears laid back and hair bristled, but bolted out of there when he likely picked up some of ourresidual human odor (or possibly failed to detect the odor he was expecting). I already had the 18+" buck (3 1/2or 4 &1/2 yrs) at 10 yds from me while he was facing the decoys - an easychip shot, but I decided to let him go. He had pretty good mass and tine length, but one tine was broken off leaving him as a 7 ptr - he might havegrossed 120 and change.
So the potential is there, but at this stage of the rut, I think a buck decoy alone would do the trick...it would be alot less hassle too. Up to today, we had 5 rejections from bucks (4 dinks, one 11 ptr) who showedjust no interest in sorting things out. The does are not happy with the setup at all. The Experiment will continue... -fsh |
RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
Hey Fsh, sounds like you had a pretty good day too! I went out for an afternoon hunt today at that new property I mentioned in a earlier post. Well at around 5:40 I had 5 does and 2 yearlings under my standing eating. I couldn't move much because more deer kept coming into the area so im looking to my left and watching the deer browse and I can hear the deer to my right but can't move due to the fact that the deer are all around me so I get the chance to turn my head and I see this BIG mature 9 or 10 point, looked to be around 125-130 class buck! He was 30 yards out but cruising to fast for me to get a shot off! If the wind is still right tomorrow I will be out there again looking to drop him!:D

RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
I went hunting this morning and could of had us on the board!!! I had a 135"ish 10 pointer at 10-12 yds for about 3 minutes. I tighten the string twice but he had a weak G-4 on the left side. I also saw 2 8 pointers a 100" and a 115". It was a great morning and hopefully I wont regret it. This was on public land and I think I made a good decision even if I dont kill a buck this year. Good luck to all. Waldo
|
RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
I got another pic of a nice buck. He looks like a mature deer with a huge neck!!! I am guessing 135"-140". He is in a food plot we just planted. Good luck to everyone. Waldo
|
RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
Waldo - he looks like he's posturing to another buck, with his ears laid back like that. Good luck with him.
-fsh |
RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
I had an 8 ptr at 14 yds last week, and a 9 ptr at 17 yds this evening... passed on both of the 3 1/2 yr olds... I am hoping a nice nontyp will cross my path... still trying.

RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
Fsh,
Sounds like your in the right spot, just need a little lady luck to be on your side and your in the money. Was out last weekend and passed on two does, saw 2 different buck, a small 6 or 8 point (not a shooter) and one very respectable (shooter)8 pointer that never made it to me before dark. I've got a vacation day on this Friday and next Thursday and Friday so I'm hoping with the weather change and the increase buck sign that I can score on one of those days. It's getting to be that special time of year and anything can happen. Good luck, Brian |
RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
Went last night and seen 12 deer. 6 bucks with the biggest being a 120" 11 pointer. Nice just short tined. Got them all on video. They are really checking scrapes now in SE KS. Good luck to all. Waldo

RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
I hunted a spot for the first time this year this afternoon, having "fixed" it up last January for a pre-rut adventure. It's in a nice travel corridor/funnel. Close... a shooter 10 ptr came thru the thicket following a doe in the early afternoon - not a monster, but a respectable 4 1/2 (??) -maybe 130-ish, but he met my criteria. Just no legitimate shot, he never got closer than 35 yds in heavy cover and ignored my grunting then rattling. If you guys can max out your hours in the stand next week, I think we're in for an early rut...
Then a scary moment tonight when a dead ~8" tree crashed down just 20 yds ahead of me across my intendedpathas I was walking out of the woods - we had 6+" of rain the past three days. It would have done some serious damage, when your time is up, its up! My time is not yet up, lol. -fsh |
RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
Hey guys, still hunting??
I took a break from the bow to (shotgun) hunt fall turks yesterday with a friend of mine, something of a tradition -we've been doing since the 80's. I called in about 20 turks off the roost, and soon had one at 8 yds in front of me. But I wanted my friend to get off the first shot (we're sitting on opposite sides of the same tree), and when he did, my turk was out of range. Still, if I had my wits about me, I could have nailed one... regardless, it's alwaysa fun hunt whether we get a bird or two or not... I saw a slew of deer on a marathon sit in the tree stand Tues. One nice 3 1/2 8 ptr followed a doe < 10 yds past my tree stand, the rest were dinks. I passed on him - there are two bigger bucks still (?) around that area. Three friends have nailed mature bucks in the past week+, two of them were ~160 class (gross). The big guys are vulnerable now... -fsh |
RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
On the board teammates. I just posted a 10 ptr I took this afternoon, 126 4/8. Not one of the monsters I've been hoping for, but a nice one. I was on the stand just 15 minutes this afternoon when a doe came running up and stopped. She kept looking back, and next thing I know, the 10'er was standing just 8 yds away. He met my criteria, and I aimed for the heart, center-punching it. He only went ~40 yds before piling up.

Fsh,
Way to go congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![:-]Super buck I was out today as well, saw only a small fork horn and 6 does. Hitting it hard in the morning. Again, awesome job, you deserve it. Take care, Brian |

Fsh...Way to go buddy. Another great buck. Awesome looking tine length. I was gonna start a "who's next" thread for the weekend and you were gonna be my pick! [:o]... Glad ya got it done early though!

RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
Congrats fsh, great buck. No hunting yet still for me, stuck away in college. I am going home this coming weekend to hunt. Leave here friday after i am done school but won't get home (5hours) until dark. Can't hunt sundays so that leaves me 1 day to fill my 3 tags. Will rifle hunt the morning for a buck then walk through a few bluffs and fill my doe tags. And then rifle or bow hunt the evening for a buck again. Not worried about filling my tags, will shoot 3 does if i have to but am worried about finding a big buck in 1 day. The pressure will be on. I am entered in both contests on here but with only 1 day i need to up my odds and go to the rifle at least for 2 of the tags. I will also get you guys some pics of the buck i pouched while i am home.Talking to my friends at home the bucks are not rutting yet. Still pretty slow as usual i will time it a little early but last year i saw my big boy on Nov 12 chasing does on a sunday so that is around the time i wanted to be home. Will take some video tape also and see if i can post it up here for you guys. Heck i have some of my archery hutning this fall i will see if i can posttoday. Started playing around with moivie maker and that last fewdays so still learning.Still figuring out this digital camera thing also. Good luck to all of you.......... Dan

RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
FSH- congrats very nice deer
well team mates i have probably finished my deer hunting for the season . between my caribou hunt and driving to Colorado and WIS. i have probably logged 10,000 miles in my truck this season. diesel was $5.00 a gallon in parts of Canada. So i have let the team down and have not got a critter....should have but did not work out. hunted 1 week in Colorado had repeated veiws of alot of very nice bucks esp the big 5 x 5 and one that was at least a 6 x7 but they were only at rifle range. then hunted 8-9 days in WI and saw some nice bucks there chasing does my opportunties in Alberta never worked out that i could hunt. ( could have hunted 1-1/2 days on trip home but since i can only hunt there every 3 years there, without guide, did not want use that up with short hunt.) not likely that i will get out to hunt for blacktail sitka's here in Alaska requires flying or trip in ocean boat looking foreward to seeing some more deer posted by team 24 |
RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
Thanks for trying AK! Sounds like you put in the effort.
Say, I am still out in the woods and shotanotherbuck this morning... I didn't score him, but I think he'ddone better than my first. I had a good quartering-away shot at 20 yds that took out the lung & heart. He went only 60 yds. Inside spread is 19 1/8 inches,a 9 ptr w/a split browtine. -fsh ![]() |
RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
Fsh, another dandy buck

RE: 24-Official Team 24 Thread
Congrats on another fsh man you are schoolin'. Here is the one i lost over thanksgiving. I will not enter him in the contest as i did not recover him until 2 days later. 5 point as i thought. Good buck but man i wish i would have got a better hit on him.
