RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
Im gonna Go ahead and throw this out there.
The Central Part of PA were i hunt, your lucky to see 2 deer a season. Thats just how it is. I personally hunted From early Archery Season to the Late Flintlock season and saw 5 deer. Thats doing Drives, Sitting on stand for hours on end, and All of that. I diddnt have a good year?? but i cant remember one that was much better ither so. The number of deer killed that were brought into our Butcher shop dropped 45% Im hoping to have a better season. Maybe i can score a bigger buck this year, or maybe just see more deer. Id be happy going out and even seeing a deer or two a day, Dont think i was staying at the same spot everyday ither, I hunted, Diamond Valley, Blandburg, Greenwood, Houtzdale, i accully hunted 7 or 8 different places local and diddnt see much there ither. Haha Hunting everywhere i have hunted last year, is a JOKE. Im gonna try harder this year. Ryan. |

Wow Ryan you do need an out of state hunt bad brother, You can come to Michigan and see double what you saw all last year in 1 night. But you most likely wont see any monsters either, Ifme and my cameraman tag out in Illinois early you are more than welcome to come up here and I will put you on some deer. Walt

Hi Hatchet Jack
Just wanted to wish you and your team good luck this season , it's funny you were placed on team 12 last year and again this year , maybe 12 is your lucky number. You got some good team mates with GregH and siikbow26 , there pretty good hunters and I'm sure you guys will have agood chance at the title. |
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
Thanks RD same to you, maybe #12 is my lucky# . That could maybe mean a 12point buck might walk under my treestand this year:DMan My7 thats a bleak picture in Central PA. Here in the Southeast of our state we have herd's of deer. I can see 10 to 30 deer sometimes out here. Lots of Doe's, to many in fact. There are some nice Bucks though. I have a camp up in Pike county in the Delaware State Forest. You can go days without seeing a deer up there in the Northeast part of the state. The rifle Hunters put a big hurt on the herd where I hunt in Pike. If you want to drive out ,I live in Bucks county just out side Philadelphia. Come on out we can do some hunting. Buy a couple of Doe tags for 5d and 5c and maybe even a Buck for the team!

[/quote] Sounds like you could use a trip to Alberta. Within one month of just rifle hunting i will see at least 300 deer. For me to hear that you are only seeing 5 a year is just mind bogling for me.But hopefully you do have a better year so your freezer will be nice and full. Just curious but did you manage to bag a deer last year?? Walt I appreciate the offer i really do BUT I failed to mention that i am only 17, and last deer season i was 16. So basically im stuck going where my friends go and unfortunately i dont live around any die hards... I wish i had better friends to hunt with me locally Rob Pa/Bowyer (sorry for spelling) was letting me talk to this guy who lives right up the road from me and i never knew it.... maybe he will let me go hunting with him. As for did i get any deer last year, the answer is yes. I tagged out. I shot "My7pointmonster" with a bow(first bowkill and First ever buck), and i happen to be a terrific shot with a rifle and a doe jumped up infront of me started running i did the MMamp thign and she diddnt stop so i put the crosshairs up waited till the ass went down saw the ears pop up pulled the trigger and thats all she wrote, she went ass over tin cup and their she layed. Big mature Doe. I dont know im gonna hunt hard everyday i can Ryan. |

Congrats on your buck and doe last year too got any pics of your 7 pointer? I only managed to bag a cow elk last year due to my rifle being all screwed up and i was workin on the rigs during bow season so only got out twice last year with the bow. But not this year:D |
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
Yeah, im hoping for a better time this year, maybe i wont have to depend on others quite so much :) I do have pictures.... but their pictures of pictures haha sucks being broke.... Just to tell yall a little bit about my 7 point monster..... He was no monster. hahaha i saw a buck and shot... 30 yards slow walk smoked him double lung put the smack down on him. ran maybe 80 yards and Boom. Dead. hahahaha i dont care that hes no 130 class or anything like that hes my first buck and i am DAMN proud of him. :)
Well yall have any more questions let me know Nice talking to yall. Ryan. |
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
As fred bear put it best "Any animal you shoot with a bow is a trophy" and well your doin better then iam. I have yet to bag a deer with my bow, i had a good shot on a nice 5x5 last year but rain washed away all the blood trail so i wasnt able to find him. But i want to make up for that this year.
|
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
Shoot my first deer with a bow was a 5pt and I will always remember that deer, They don't have to be monsters to be your monster!! Everybody looks at that question differently and only the man or girl behind the bow can make that decission!!! Walt
|
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
Well said Walt. The shooter is the ultimate judge on the quality of the animal.
|
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
Check this monster out!!! Seen him on some land just by where i hunt. Im goin to see if i can get permission to hunt there so i can try and get a poke at him.
![]() ![]() i know this has nothing to do with the contest but i figured a little eye candy never hurt any boyd. Few nice elk i seen while out scouting ![]() |
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
I dont thinkhe likesyou taking pics of him.

RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
Wow Buddy that must be nice to be able to see elk like that. Ive never seen one, the times i tried to go up to elk county i never saw nothin so *shrug* i happens. gotta move on ;)
So Anyhow i agree any deer with a bow IS trophy weather everyone says it is or not. Killing an animal with your bow is an accomplishment. Ryan. |
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
WOW what a deer. I think that deer alone would win the contest for our team. When does your season start. I can catch a Red Eye from Philly airport the day before and we can hunt that deer the first day of archery:DNice Elk too. Always wanted to hunt Alberta!!! You have some MONSTERS up North!!!!

Hatchet Jack As for hunting Alberta and us having some monsters. Yes we do have LOTS of monster's due to the amount of land and the lack of hunting pressure in lots of areas so there is lots of trophys. I hunt in three different places and only one of them do i see maybe a few other hunters, but between the other two places i have over 20 sections of land to hunt all to myself so lots of big boys runnin around:D:D |
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread

RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
Good news guys!!!
Since i havent been able to get out many evenings, and scout or mornings, i went for a walk around 130 today and i found a bunch of scrapes by one of the places i was thinking about hunting... What do you guys think, should i hang a stand and see how it goes or go to the sorta close to a "foot plot" area i have set up??? let me know what you guys think your opinion matters the most to me, And GREAT pictures buddy. Ryan. |
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
I would definately hunt the food source in the early season. Scrapes this time of the don't mean a whole lot. Try not to set up right on top of your food plot. Set up back in the woods a catch them before they come to the plot. The Bucks will hang back in the woods alot longer than the Doe's will before they hit the food plot. It don't take long for the Bucks to know its that time of the year again. Don't over hunt your stand either. You will burn the spot out. Also a mature Doe is as smart or smarter than a buck. Don't let them figure you out. I hope this helps and don't stop asking questions. You have some verygood hunters on our team and fourm. Be Safe

RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
Yep exactly what hachetjack said!!!! You will be surprisedhow much those big boys hang back early in the season!!!! Walt
|
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
problem with that is my "food plot" diddnt grow :( so its got a little clover down on the ground not more than an inch long and someone shot a ground hog up there today that was eating i guess, and my food plot is maybe 5 yards wide 60 yards long... ive never accully figured out how long it was, Anyhow, im gonna give it a shot, the only way to hunt by the food plot is to use a climber cant leave stands in the woods where i hunt people are ........ well their not good people lets leave it at that, so they would get stolen.... Gimmie some feed back on the new Info. Thanks
Ryan. |
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
If you have a nice set of hardwoods to hunt take a walk with a good set of binoculars and find some acorn trees. Glass the top of the trees to see if they have acorns growing. Red oaks are good White oaks are GOLD. If you find White oak trees you will find Whitetails. When the acorns start falling the deer will be there sucking them up;)The deer will eat the red oak acorns when all the whites are gone. The reds are sour bitter taste the white are sweet. Take a bite out of each you will see what I mean. The reds[:'(]the whites:)Concentrate on OAK trees and you will find deer!!! Dem Hogs you have out there in Central Pa will be sucking up them acorns too. They can be a problem[:@]Eradicate DEM HOGS!!!!!!!!!!
Hatchet Jack |
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
Ive never seen any hogs, there are a ton of White Oaks in the hardwoods i hunt, problem being in these hardwoods there are A holes who ride their 4-wheelers all the time, tried everything i know so i'm gonna try this spot with the scrapes, there are oak trees, gotta look see what type they are (red or white oaks)
Ryan. :) |
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
Wow thats some neat info hatchet, never knew that. Then again there arent many oaks where i hunt, mostly poplars and pines and spruces where i am but still good to know. Im glad that the hog plague hasnt really reached up here. There are a few hogs in some areas but not that many, our biggest problem still is yotes.
|
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
our biggest problem still is yotes. Ryan. |
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
Sorry coyotes. Big pest around here yet they still wont let us bait them or use electronic calls for them.[:@]

RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
So, yall was saying hunt by the White oaks White Oaks White Oaks!!!! i went up into the woods today to look for these ever illusive White-tails and to look around for some Of the Ever illusive White-Oaks.... heres what i found.
White oak, Red Oak, White Oak, Red Oak, White Red White White White red red White White Red Red Red Red Red White Red White Red White white white..... (get my drift) anyhow, I diddnt see any deer but one made that blowing noise at me, i diddnt even see it if it ran, it was in the REALLY REALLY thick stuff, anyhow, how do i choose a white oak or a red oak to hunt under??? please help me out its getting down to Crunch Time. My AIM is thedrunknirish69 if you have aim let me know its a lot faster than posting notes. Thanks. Ryan. |
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
My7 you can tell which Oaks the deer are hitting by the Deer dung on the ground near the trees. You don't want to hunt right on top of the food source. Try to find out where the deer are beding and set a stand in-between the food source and beding area. Just because you have alot of Oak trees does not mean they have fruit/acorns on them. Most white oaks don't produce acorns every year, the red oaks will. If your woods have alot of oaks thats a good thing!! It will hold deer. Find out were the deer in your area are bedding!!!!! BUT stay away from that area. Look for the thickest/nasty part, that should be the beds (STAY OUT) The next good storm/highwinds you should see a good bit of acorns on the ground. Don't get frustrated, this is half the fun trying to figure out the Crafty Whitetail. Keep working at it and it will payoff!!! GoodLuck and Be Safe!!!

RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
Ok guys i need a lil help with a HUGE dilemma i got right now involving a monster whitey. So the past couple years ive been seeing this monster of buck. Last year he was 6x6 with two identical drop tines on either side got at least a 20" spread tip-tip and his G1's must be pushing 14" like he's a real monster and i just got word from the rancher who's land this monster is on, just spotted him again and hes lookin massive. But here has been my problem the past few years. He is a genius. Everytime i spot him it is no longer legal shooting time(to early or to late in the day) or he is just not giving me a shot due to thick brush or other deer in the way. I have only noticed one time that he gives me a good shot but i cant due to lack of light and its about a 50yard clearing between brush. Ive tried setting up on the trail he takes to get to his bedding area and where he feeds but some how he knows im there and he will stay just out of range or behind just enough brush. Ive called, rattled, mock scrape everything, and nothin is bringin him in closer, and yes im in full camo, and cover scent on. Im just wondering if there is anything else i can try to get this big boy or anything different i should do.
|
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
Maybe just wait and don't hunt him till you know the Rut is in full swing. Then hunt the area that most of the Does hang out in. Maybe you could spot him feeding early and know where he's feeding at night and sneek into his bedroom well before first light ( you might sleep in the woods for this one) This might be a one time deal because if he busts you in his bedroom the jig is up. The wind must be %100 right and you must be as sent free as possible. It might be worth it for a Buck like this one. Goodluck your going to need it;)
Hatchet Jack |
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
You might also want to think about decoying him, Stay away till just before the rut these big boys hate other guys on there terf!! I killed mine last year with a decoy and you can watch the video and see how pissed he was. He was walking straight for the decoy ready to fight!! Walt
|
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
Thats a good idea stikbow26 with the decoy. I started hunting with a decoy 2 years ago. I wish I been hunting with them sooner. I had some cool times hunting with them. Dem deer will do some crazy things to a decoy, sometimes its a real laugh at their reaction. They are fun to hunt with!!!!
Hatchet Jack |
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
I just might have to try a decoy then, and i dont plan on goin in there untill pre-rut starts up which is mid oct, cause i know this buck way to well and the rancher seen him right where i always see him so i really dont think he has moved areas and i dont think there are any bucks in that area that are big enough to run him out yet.
|
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
lethal,I totally agree with stickbow and hatchet. Try the decoy, I had a nice 8 point come into my decoy last year and and give me a perfect shot, which I totally screwed up and made one of the worst shots that I have ever taken in 28 years of bowhunting [:@][:@], but trust me guys I will redeem myself this year. The point is decoys work great especially during the rut.
|
RE: 12- Official Team 12 Thread
Bummer on the miss!!! But just think he will be even bigger for this year!!!! Walt
