RE: 43- Official Team Chaos Thread

Sorry to jump on your thread guys but I just wanted to tell Jeff not to worry about what happened. Like many have said, you did nothing wrong. I'm pretty sure I would have done the same thing. Jeff, you found your deer...you found it. I have had deer on the ground for 10 hours before recovering them. The only difference in our stories was the temperature.

If it had been cooler your story would have been one of persistence and good tracking decisions (grid search etc...) ending with a recovery of a perfectly palatable deer.

You have nothing to hang your head about...nothing.

RE: 43- Official Team Chaos Thread

Hey GMMAT...Everyones said it..and I agree. You Did good. You made a lethal shot on a deer and recovered her.

Was there an option?? And I'm not condemming..I'm thinking out loud...We discuss ethics multiple times daily. At some point do we say the temperature is going to be high 80's or higher, consequently I'm not going to hunt?

In the north we probably do that at times..but it's more for self comfort, than some grand, high road, for the deer we may shoot. In the South it would be much much tougher. Especially on opening day!

As you say "Fair Question"?

AGAIN I will state that I'm not condemming or saying I would have done anything different than you!! But perhaps it is worthy of debate.(?)

GMMAT 09-10-2007 07:21 AM

RE: 43- Official Team Chaos Thread

GR8:

"Fair"...absolutely!

In hindsight...."maybe" I don't take a 30 yd shot at a feeding deer (she was feeding under a persimmon tree)? You know, though.....I've practiced hard to become proficient enough to think I could make that shot. It's debateable. YES. I'm living with that.

Temps? Again...YES. Debateable. Had I hit 3" lower, though.....we woudn't be having such a conversation. I didn't. So I screwed the pooch (or the doe, in this instance).

Will it affect my shot selection (temps...general shot slection...etc..)? Most definitely. Will it need to be a slam-dunk from this point forward in those temps? Yes.

Idon't take your constructive "discussion" as anything other than that. respect your views. Thanks for sharing.

RE: 43- Official Team Chaos Thread

Back in the saddle, guys.

I'll be back in one of my good "outskirt" spots this afternoon. If I can handle my doe pop. thinning without going into my prime spots....I will (from now on). I know I stunk up a great spot searching for that doe on Saturday.....so I'll probably let that one cool off for a week.

My sightings might be down for a while.....but I think I'm doing the right thing. I hung a stand yesterday on the outskirts.....and I'll try to utilize it while the temps are so hot. I'll sweat less getting in there if I'm not climbing. I guess you never know in deer hunting.....I might have the one I'm after come by just as easily.

I'm going back in. Wish me luck.

I didn't get to shoot any deer this morning but I did draw back on one for practice. It was a small doe with twin fawns. Before she got to my shooting zone I had already decided to pass on her. Since I had never even drawn on a live deer I thought this would at least be a good chance for some practice. Everything went well.Waited for her to walk behind a small cedar and drew back undetected. No deer shot but a great morning all around. Thinking a spot is good for your climber is one thing but finding out it actually is,is fantastic ! Good luck everyone. Hope you're feeling better Gary.

Hey Captain...sorry I didnt catch the flu thing yesterday..Hope ya are feeling better.. I know your chomping at the bit to get to to KY..

I'm taking my sons to a ground blind this evening. I've been hunting 9 out of the last 10 days straight and my oldest told me last night before bed he wished he could spend some more time with me..so we made a plan last night to build aground blind at aspot that the elk and deer are using to get to my neighbors oats.. We'll see what happens..either way I am gonna have a great time getting the boys all ready this evening..probably paint thier faces for them..I told them they are helping build the blind too...My wife has a hair appointement..so its either she take them with her or I take them hunting..

Hey Germ, was that the Michigan Blue Flu you had?:D

Your boys aren't doin so good.

Troy, how neat would it be if you shot a good buck with your boys along with you? That would be a lifelong memory for everyone. I took my daughter with mea few times in our subdivision. We saw a couple of does, but no shots. She is not the hunting type. She is all girl. Was really intocompetetive gymnastics until this year. She decided she didn't want to do it in college and wanted to enjoy her Senior year at High School.

Rob I sure hope you get to draw on one for real pretty soon. You never forget your first one, no matter what it is.

Thanks Troy and John. I'm still grinning ear to ear (it helps that my Bengals won too):) Since I only started this last year, it feels good that things you guys have helped me with and other things I've read on this forum are really paying off. Don't know if I'll be able to contain myself when I do get one. I feel like I'm 10 again (wife says more like eight) !

Hope your account gets fixed soon Will.

Will, my email is [email protected]let me know if I can help out with the account..

Gary, hope your feeling better today!

The boys and I went out below the house here and had a good evening..we crawled up in some thick brush and made a nice blind.. Had a doe come by at 6 yards..the boys loved it..nothing else for the evening.. my neighbor got a new harely today and right before dark when we expected the elk to come up...his brother drove up to his house and they proceded to rev the hell out of the newharley for about 5 minutes...didnt hear or see a thing after that.. [:'(]lol

THIS IS A REAL CRAPPY PICTURE ....but its the best I got out of my cheapy camera ..the other day of Stretch.. hope you can make him out..

Allright Team,

I'm back! Looks like they got my account fixed. I can see that I was sorely missed. ;)

Belated condolences Jeff for the lost deer. I've lost 2 deer - one due to heavy rain and
the other the biggest deer I've seen in the wild (a big 9-10 point) when I was young (also rain). It sucks.

Rob, I think you are going to get one. Being aggressive in changing set up may pay off there.

Germ, bag one in Kentucky.

Troy, thanks for the help and good luck with Stretch.

John, put us on the board.

HuntingLady and HuntmUp, give us an update.

I am not only hunting this weekend, I am killing!;)

I can almost guarentee I will kill a doe this weekend in my subdivision. And with some luck maybe even a buck. I just don't know if I want to mess up an area by killing a doe. I will have to wait and see how things work out.

The temps are supposed to be perfect. High 40's low 50'sat night and 60's and 70's during the day. AHHHHHH yes!

Gary, thanks, I am going to Walmart this afternoon after work to see what my options are. I cant hunt today guys. I have "open house" at school until 7:30 pm. I'll be back after them tomorrow. Does anyone use or know of how well the digital camera binocs work???

John..best of luck to you buddy..I'm happy to hear more guys on the team are gonna be hunting.

Will, Glad to see you got your account fixed..U still have a while don't you before the opener?

Rob, Hope one walks by that makes you happy bud..best of luck the rest of this week.. U hunting today???

Hunt, Tand Lady.. hope to hear from you all soon..

Jeff, thanks.. he's a hoss for this country... big old mountain buck. Its bucks like him... the few around.. that keep me from shooting the up and coming bucks... I've got a southern wind tree stand site located that I can hunt him out ofnow.. I am gonna put that stand in possibly tomorrow right after work..I willmethodically move in on where he feels comfortable during daylight hours.. I have the right wind to go hunt the other county tomorrow as well..where the big 4x5 lives..thats where I am headed most likely.. The 4x5 is the same caliber of buck as Stetch..both solid forsure 150+ bucks..maybe better..

Good lucktoday if your huntingJeff..

RE: 43- Official Team Chaos Thread

Shed..The camera/ binos I've seen are nothing more than a cheap pair of binoculars and a digital camera. The zoom on the Binos in no way had any bearing on the zoom of the camera. They are basically 2 seperate entities in one housing.

There may be better ones now-a-days ...if so let me know.

I've been looking into some spotting scopes that incorporate a digital camera and from the price tag I assume they work quite well.

shed33 09-11-2007 03:42 PM

RE: 43- Official Team Chaos Thread

Gr8, thank you very much. Those digital/binocs always seem to be on clearance..:)That spotting scope looks very nice, I am going to look at my options.

Gary, what kind of range does your camera have? Zoom clarity..etc.. 100 yards, 200 yards? 300 yards..

No hunting today. Had some stuff to do around the house. If I can get out of work at a decent hour tonight I hope to be back out tomorrow. We've got a north wind blowing in the next couple of days so I'm going to a different stand. Haven't been in this one yet so maybe the first time will be the charm.

With this cold front coming get in the woods is all I can say!!!!

When you these fronts coming plan to get on the woods. I am more than willing to skip a hunt for a "honey do" in early season with hot weather.

Here is example

3 of the 10 bucks in MI last year fell on Oct 14th. Looking through my notes it was night right before the cold front. I had the buck I shot 30 yds from me. I had 4 other bucks I could have shot.

One thing I know is deer move before fronts, get in those woods!!!!.

Troy, I have a Nikon Coolpix S4 digital camera. I really like this model, 10x zoom and very compact. It is 6 megapixel and has a 2.5 in screen. The pics of the beanfield bucks were taken with it. Some are blurry because I couldn't hold the camera still.:DThey still shake me up even if I am not hunting them.:D

I got this pic of an owl a while back with a steady rest, and he was a good ways off.

1st time into the honey hole, yesterday evening.

Who would have thunk it? Zilch. Not even a sighting. it's pretty thick in there.....so they obviously could've skirted me, too.

Not sure about today. Just not sure if I'm gonna make it out or not. I'm a bit whooped.

Jeff, if you get out good luck.. Many a time in my neck of the woods, I either see the deer I am after or nothing at all. Most of the older bucks I hunt live alone and in there own little area...

Rob, best of luck in the new stand... Often the first time into a stand results in good movement..

I've got a Northern wind today guys.. Heading back in after Stretch..this afternoon ;)
