welcome stealth buck! I think arrowing a mule deer would count for this contest, but I am not positive.

My first trip out was scheduled shortly after 9/11. My brother-in-law is stationed at Kirtland AFB in Albuqueque and lives with his family in Tijeras. Even he lost out on his elk hunt that year. I ended up going out in 2002. We saw elk every day. No opportunity for any shots. Didn't know what i was getting into, i wasn't prepared physically and or equipment wise. I went back out again in 2005 with a cow tag and all we saw were bulls. 3 definate shooters if we had a tag. I was in much better shape and brought a GPS with me. This time we have a Muley tag and and an either sex elk tag.
And I have been walking 2-3 miles four or five times a week. Shooting almost everyday. And I don't care if i don't get anything this time either, just being out there in that wilderness is just amazing.

Welcome to the team StealthBuck. Good luck on your Muley and Elk hunt. One of my brothers was recently married in Colorado. And darn my luck, but my new sister in laws father and brother told me and my son we can come out Elk hunting whenever we want. We already are lining up a trip for next year. Good luck to everyone this season.

I got out for a couple hours last evening out behind town. I got eaten alive by blackflies and had way more bear sign around than I was comfortable with. The biggest buck I've seen so far this year has been walking through my backyard two weeks before the season opener. Maybe I'll just stay home and hunt from the back deck...

Good luck to you guys getting out this weekend. Use the 3 day weekend to your advantage and shoot us some big ones!!

Kodiak, I hear you have some big bears in AK. My boss got back last week from a salmon trip, in a place called Naknek. Not that far from you as far as things go in Alaska. They had a couple encounters with some of the big furry brownies wanting to steal their fish :D. The trip started out bad and the guide was fired by the third day, they managed to hook up with someone else and end up having a great time and loads of fish. He did say the bugs where a HUGE pita. I guess you get used to them.Right?

I don't do much stand hunting so I doubt it's going to work to carry around with me everywhere. Besides, I've heard they're good for mosquitos but I haven't heard anything about blackflies and no-see-ums.

What does evryone do besides work to pass the time till the season starts? I keep the yard in order and do a little surf fishing, early Oct it's a tuff choice between the super fishing we have and the early bow season (too many ticks in the early season).

Surf,
I have been coaching youth basketball since i was senior in high school. Our season runs from Oct to March. This year marks my 27th year. I have coached ages 6 thru 18, but all 27 of my years have been in the 9/10 yr old boys league. For spring and summer i will fish or play golf. I try to keep the house looking good, i luck out with the lawn, i have a teenage daughter who likes to put on her bathing suit and get a sun tan while riding the mower around.

I keep busy in the off season by golfing with my son. Plus he was on two baseball teams,
and played in a summer hockey league, so with all the games and work I keep fairly busy to say the least.

Well, I went out last night.

I didn't see a whole lot of anything, really. I had a small[ish] 4x4 walk by at 10 yards. They sure look a lot bigger from a ground blind. He probably would have scored 110, give or take.

Not really what I'm looking for this season, but we'll see what Thursday/Friday brings.

About 55*F.

Remember Wash, "Don't pass a buck on the first day that you'd shoot on the last day." I hope a real bruiser gives you the same shot soon. [8D]

It got hit by a williwaw last Monday and flipped while parked on a beach, nobody was in it at the time. Good luck to you guys that are hunting. "See" y'all in a couple weeks!

Just curious if anybodys season started and if you seen anything with potential ? I've still got a week to wait and the weather is actually cooling down nicely, which is really giving me the itch to get out and smack one. Good luck everyone.

Well guys, i just saw a nice buck on my way home frmm my brothers hockey game. He was very symetrical at least 6pts. There is a piece of the Merritt Parkway here is CT that is bow only. I started hunting there last yr on a whim when my brother couldn't make it out. I ended up shooting a nice 6 or 8 at about 30 yds. after standing just standing around for about 45 minutes, no stand or blind. Just leaning against a tree. Long story short, 3 days later and a very small blood trail we could not find him. Myself, my brother and another friend spent hours looking. So now to tonight i see this buck about 100 yds from where i shot last year. Guess where i will be when i get back from New Mexico. Any way i don't now how much computer time i will ge this week before i leave. Hopefully the next time you hear from me it will be with a Muley score card.
I leave friday night and will hopefully be hunting Sat afternoon. I know a few of you guys have already started and here in CT we start on Sat anyway. Well good luck to all.

Good luck Kodiak, hope you bag a big one. My season opens up this Saturday (Finally!), but unless a big boy walks by this weekend, I won't be getting on the score board until at least the second week in October. I've got to go to Germany (and by a totalcoincidence I'll be in Munich for Oktoberfest!) and then I'll be in Maine visiting the family.

I'm gone for a week and you guys can't manage to put us on the board?!!! Guess your deer hunting is going like our moose hunt went. we covered over 150 miles of moose country in the Beaver and didn't see a single moose, not even a cow! We saw a lot of bears so I guess I know where the moose ended up. There were 4 guide camps in the area and we flew around them too without seeing anything. Glad I wasn't paying thousands of dollars to be there! Now I can concentrate on killing a few P&Y deer![8D]

Yeah, they're around but getting fewer every week (we don't have a seperate bow season so the rifle hunters are laying the smack down on them right now). One of my pilots crashed his plane and another gave up flying charters in favor of a gov't. contract for ADF&G. I need to put together something for a late Oct. trip for some pre-rut action before the remaining flight services are booked.

Sorry I haven't had a chance to get on here, I've been packing up to drive to Maine. Kodiak, sorry to hear you got blanked.

So I went out on Saturday, it was colder than it's been in a while and a bit rainy. Come about 9 I saw two doe come in, one still had faint spots on its butt, the other was skinny as a rail from the drought we've had all summer. They came in straight on to my stand, and I didn't even bother trying to get my bow. I saw a fawn prancing around solo in the afternoon, but that was it.

Now for a gear review. Thermacell works great... until you shut it off, then you get torn up by the chiggers... climbing up your bibs... when you're only wearing underwear underneath... buy stock in hydrocortizone.

I'll be gone for about two weeks or so, I'll try to check in periodically, good luck everyone!

Season doest open till Oct. 6. I am heading home from college on the 5th and will do a quick afternoon scouting trip, although I already have the morning and evening stands picked out, assuming the wind is correct. I am looking for a doe at first, but surely if a buck walks by, he will be having an arrow thrown at him. Cant wait!!! Hows everybody else doing?

Yeah, where the Hell is that young punk team captain of ours anyway? I hope he hasn't gotten himself tangled up with a girlfriend or anything of the sort that's going to cut into hunting time!!:D:D:D

I was going to pack my blind into a spot in the mountains where I had a lot of staging activity last fall but we're getting hit with a pretty good storm right now so I'm doing house chores and watching it rain and blow instead. Why does this crap always hit on a weekend?!
