RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread

RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Later boys! The fish have moved off and the grass is died back so I'm loading up the pack and getting serious about deer hunting this weekend! We need to put something on the board! (Although I am kind of partial to the last rack I posted!!!)
|
RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Rob, if you shoot a buck with a rack like in your last post it is sure to goat least 150. :D

RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Sorry about not poating a lot lately, guys. School started and I was working 10-hour shifts at work, so I've just been slammed as heck for time. I've just switched to part-time so I'll have four days off a week. I'll try to get one a bit more frequently.
The early season was a bust, but I look forward to the late season more than the early anyway. |
RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Well shooting light starts inb about 4-5 hours. Wish me luck. Hope I put team 23 on the board

RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Hey guys,
Well I got home last night from NM, unfortunately empty handed (at least i was). As far as i was concerned it was a great 2 weeks; no work, lots of fresh air, great scenery and we could hear and see elk everyday. Just not so lucky with the deer. But any way here are the highlights of the trip.... In the 8 days I was out there I saw 1 deer and my brother-in-law saw 1. Although he did have an elk tag. And thats what was walkin around. The night before the elk hunt started he took a pic of a 7x7, then for the next 3 days took 4 shots(misses) ...2 shots at 6x6's, 1 shot at a 5x and 2 shots at cows. All the bull shots were long shots; the first cow shot should have been a kill but my Bro-in-law said he looked away from the vitals and at the head and shot over her back at about 15 yds. On Friday night one of the 6X6s came out to feed, he was set up in a blind and stood to take the shot. The elk was sucking down acorns from a scrub oak. Mark lined up took the shot and put it right between his legs and into the oak. Well that spooked the bull and he went back into the thick stuff and out of site, Mark went to look but he was gone. He then went over to the oak to get his arrow. The broad head was stuck in the tree so he just unscrewed it and stuck the arrow back in the quiver. Mark tried to get me on the radio to let me know he had another opportunity, while doing this a group of cows just walked out into this small meadow. As he watched 2 cows started to walk by as he stood on top of this knoll. He pulled out another arrow and at about 20yds let it fly and hit the first cow. She took off running but the other elk didn't notice. Mark said he could hear his cow go down and was breathing heavy. He stood there for a while without spooking the other elk and then walked back to camp after dark. he said he was pretty sure it was a good shot but he didn't want to push her. So we decided just to eat dinner, get to bed early and get up early and go track her. Well we got up the next morning and while getting ready Mark went to his case to replace an arrow and the broad head on the arrow in his quiver. Next thing I know he is in the tent saying when he looked at the arrows in his quiver they all had broadheads...yep he shot the elk with a broadhead-less arrow. Well we went out and started from the spot he shot from he took one side of the meadow and i took the other and within 15 seconds we found her. I guessed she probably weighed about somewhere between 350-400 lbs. While we were butchering her, we found where the arrow had hit, through the rib cage, breaking a rib puncturing both lungs and then hitting a rib on the other side. We found the arrow and measured through the rib cage as to where the blood mark was on the arrow. Anyway i got to bring home a few steaks and some stew meat. But now after a few days to get caught up around home and work i will try and get out to try and help out the team. When i get the pics of the elk i will post all i have is a little video. Jack |
RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Well, I got out a little this weekend. I overnighted on the mountain Saturday night and woke with a light layer of ice on my bivy. Spotted lots of does and a little fork buck but nothing worth spending my tag on this early in the season. There was lots of sign from bigger bucks tearing up the alders. Come the first week of Nov. there ought to be rut crazed bruisers running all over up there just like last year.
Sorry that you didn't connect on a mulie Stealth. I hope the whitetails cooperate a little better. |
RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Saturday opens our season here in Virginia. I am still at school, but heading home thursday afternoon...I couldnt even sleep last night!!!! I am practically counting down time to the second...its driving me crazy! The weather looks like lows in the upper 50's and a high reaching 80, fortunately, this food plot that was just planted this year wiht clover has been pulling deer out into it at all times of the day. I CANT WAIT!!!!

RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread

RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Well I'm pretty excited for the weekend, I'll be heading home Thursday night and hunting through Sunday. It's gonna be nice to get out in the woods, especially when its gonna be nice and cool out. Hopefully I can at least get a shot at a doe, gotta break in the new bow. GL this weekend guys.

RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
I shot a doe on saturday, our opening day here in VA. the whole story is in the bowhunting forum. it was my first bow kill, so now I am ready to take a buck! double lung and heart shot, doe went 40 yards and dropped!
|
RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Congrats on the doe Bass!! I've had company in town that's been keeping me out of the mountains. We got our first snow on Saturday and I've been scraping frost every morning since; Global Warming my ass! This is the earliest I've ever seen snow here and that's coming off a particularly harsh winter last year.
|
RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Congrats Bass...i remember my first bow kill. It was a double..a small 4 pointer came by shot him and then 2 does walked by while i was giving him some time and i shot one of them. Both double lung shots. Neither ran more than 20 yds.
|
RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Bass congrats on your first bow kill. It feels good to get that first one under your belt doesn't it?
Paul |
RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Thanks everyone, it was exciting. I still get excited when I look at the pictures. But now its down to business...we need to get some big deer on the board!
|
RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Well I hope others are doing better than I am 3 days in the woods and I have yet to see a deer. Public land [:@]and the weather sure is not helping.Worst part is a co-worker sending text messages about what he is seeing. Private land :Dnext to a farm. Going to PA next weekend hope it cools off.

RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
It's been pretty slow here in MN. Although I did see a nice 8 pointer on Wed. night chasing some Does and Fawns, and my son saw a ten pointer on Sat. morning, he was chasing a pair of Does. So it won't be long. I am on vacatoin after this Tues. So I'll be out for 9 straight days, so hopefully things will pick up.
Congrats on your first Bow kill Bass. Good luck everyone. |
RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Wouldn't you know that this is the one weekend I have to hunt hard during Oct. and I come down sick on Friday night?![X(][:@] Instead of going on a two day pack in hunt I went out behind the house in some thick timber for Sat. afternoon and hitched a flight up north of here in my housemates bush plane to hike around for a couple hours in the clear cuts on Sunday. I think the only 4 legged critters we saw on the ground were 2 red squirrels. We couldn't find the elk herd we went looking for but we did scope out some goats on the way home. Man, the snow is piling up already up in the mountains! At least I'm getting this cold out of the way now and I'll be 100% when bow season for deer and goats arrives Nov. 1!!!!!!
|
RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
I've been out a few times, but the weather's been so hot nothing is moving around. I can't wait for fall... um, winter? Hell, anything but this summer weather! Rob, I'd kill for some snow! Good luck this weekend everyone, muzzleloader starts in MD this weekend I believe, maybe it'll shake some stuff loose.

RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Man, I hope you guys have been quiet because you're out hitting the woods. Bear season opened Monday and I'm itching to get out but I've got a non-hunting girlfriend showing up tonight for the next 10 days. I'm not going to be able to get out until after the 30th[&:] Maybe I'll make up for it by taking the first week of November off and trying for a Kodiak Road System Slam; Brown Bear, Mountain Goat and Blacktail all in one week! Ahhh.... just the thought of it gets me pumped up!
Where the Hell are you guys?! What's going on? |
RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
welp...i hunted friday afternoon and didnt see are darn thing. saturday morn i had a 4 pt. and 6 pt. under my stand, but both were real young and wouldnt have given us any points. That saturday afternoon i got skunked as well. and go figure, i wake up this morning and get a call...a friend hunted the stand i was in on friday afternoon, he got in it saturday morning and shot a whopper! 140 in 8 point. Good for him though. I need the rut to start kicking in!
|
RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Hey, we're your friends too Bass! When do we get to come shoot a 140" buck out of your stand?;):D:D:D

RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Haha, i wish i had enough to go around! We might be able to work something out...when can i make it up to alaska?
|
RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Actually Kodiak...I was curious abuot Alaska. Are there large tracts of land to buy up there for cheap, or is it expensive? How much are tag prices? Lots of public land i think you said, is it quality? Are there lots of hunters up there? Tell me about it all!!!
|
RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
hey fellas hows the seasons going? Its been real windy and warm in IL but it has finally cooled down. I had a 150-155 class 10-point at 25 yards but behind him was a brute. He was at 65 yards. I counted roughly 14-points but he never came in close enough. I was unsure about the shot becuause of the wind. He'll be down by the end of the season. Best of luck to all!
|
RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Can't wait to see your hands wrapped around his rack Bighunter!
Bass, There's not much available to buy but the majority of the state is public land. I can't even remember what a "posted" sign looks like. The number of hunters depends on the season and area; some hunts are overcrowded and others you wouldn't have another human within hundreds of miles. The real challenge (and cost) is access; bush planes aren't cheap! Here's a link to the ADF&G website. The Regulations section has got all the area/season/tag info. If there's a specific species you're interested in let me know and I can dial you in or at least point you in the right direction. Just be aware that goats, sheep and brown bears require a non-resident to hire a guide on top of the tag and license fee. http://adfg.state.ak.us/ And here's a link to an AK specific forum: http://forums.outdoorsdirectory.com/...splay.php?f=22 |
RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Well fellas, I am heading home once again from school, and the word is the deer here in VA are moving a ton. It just got cold and the rut it kicking in. I am looking forward to an exciting two days of hunting, we will see how things turn out!
I did have one question for you all to help me out with. There are plenty of stands I could hunt, but I was thinking about humping up this mountain to a little saddle I know of, a good mile or two hike back. I would like to hunt it in the afternoon, silently hike back there around 1 or 2pm and get comfy against a tree. I saw a great 10 pointer there last year, and there are other big ones that roam back there, especially since theres not much pressure back there at all. I was curious if you guys think hunting with a bow for a big buck is a wise idea, I know they are smart, but if I build a good blind I recon I could draw my bow then raise up and thwack the biggun'...let me know what you all think, where to hunt this part of the rut? |
RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Sounds like your scenario is what I do every time I go deer hunting. Just be aware that if you do get one back in there you're going to have to know how to bone it out and you'll need a pack that can handle a whole deer. Oh yeah, and the legs that can carry that 60-90# pack. My preferred method is to bring along a big non-hunting friend and let them carry the pack!;)Any scent control you do on a hunt like that (hiking 2 miles into the mountains) is going to be worthless so you better pay close attention to the wind. Shoot us a big'un!!!

RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Well I just got back from PA, had to meet with a builder of our potential new house. Figured to hunt Monday after the meeting andthis morning before I left. I arrived Sunday and did a quick scout, picked a spot between 2 fields about 100yds wide seemed like a good travel route with good sign. Set up about 3pm and within half and hour had a doe and fawn go by then it got quiet till about 5:30pm then3 more doe and a fork horn came by. Practiced drawing on 2 of them (successfully) never got busted. I couldmake outanother deer moving but it was to far to see what it was. All in all a good night. It was nice to see a buck for a change I was begining to think I had a curse on me.:D The morning hunt was abust, now its back to work.
Hope the rest of you are seeing some deer. Paul |
RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread
Our archery only season starts tomorrow for mountain goat and deer. I also just picked up my brown bear tag just in case. If the weather cooperates we're going to take a little scouting flight tomorrow evening and depending on what we see I may come down ill at work on Friday...
![]() Time to break out the deer hat, decoy and calls!! This'll be me on Saturday: ![]() |
RE: 23-Official Team 23 Thread

That hat is awesome, had much luck with it? Its finally starting to cool off around here, I'm hoping this weeked will be good. Good luck everyone. Ken |
