Hello guys! I am in Minnesota and our season starts Sept. 16. Got a blind and a stand set up yesterday. I can hardly wait. Hopefully the rest of the group will show this week yet!

Good to hear from you MDManiac! Hope no one minds, but I sent PMs to the team members who haven't checked in yet so we'll hopefully know what kind of shape we're in by this weekend in terms of needing alternates.

Checking in now. I thought we had a couple more weeks before the teams were chosen.:)

I have some public areas with good 120+ class bucks but they are tough to hunt. Also have some private land with a nice 9, an 8 and a wide 6 that were on the trail cam. Hopefully will have some nice ones come by this year.

If we select a team name...we have to have Blackjack in there.

September 2nd is our opener and I've got some big boys roaming around. I'm too ready to get up in the tree.

I see a few familiar names on the team:)
Chuck--Thanks for the kind words.
If you are all deciding on a team captain I say Chuck is the man.He was on my team last year and this man knows his stuff. He is definately a great addition to the team.
Kcison has proven himself time and again.I know your team will be high on the point system.
Good luck to team 21:)

Greetings-I received an e-mail saying to go to 21 to check in. Well, I am checking in. I have not taken a Buck in the last 2 years (by choice) but have passed on a few very good ones. I will do my best to help the team along this year. I am celebrating my 50th year as a Bowhunter-I have never purchased any biggame gun tag (but have no problems with those that choose that as their sport). I have my eye on a couple big Iowa Bucks, but then, I have been watching them pass out of bow range for several years too. Good Luck to all thisseason.

RE: 21- Team Offical Thread

Thanks Jason (extreme1). If we need an alternate, let's lobby for extreme1 but it looks like Robb has indicated we may need to pony up some cash if we are allowed to choose! :D

As for the team captain situation, not sure I'd want to be considered for that role or that you would even consider me given my experience.I am a second year bowhunter - a doe slayer twice last year but no bucks as I passed on a few forkies. I am having a blast at it, though, and plan to bowhunt exclusively this year. This is the year for a big boy. I can feel it.:)

Kcison, that looks line a nice buck in your avatar! When did you get him?

Welcome ahunter55. What part of the border are you from? I grew up in Dubuque along the Illinois/Iowa border and last year my teammate Antler Eater was from Iowa.

Like you chucker this is going to be 4th year hunting and still looking for that buck. Seen a few last year, and hoping to get one this year. As for a team captain, I'd say who everis up for the job, not sure what the team captain is expected to do. I'm pretty new here on this site.

RE: 21- Team Offical Thread

Thankschuck..got the buck in 2003. 180 5/8ths. He's a once in a lifetime buck. Actually won the huntingnet.com big buck contest with that one in 03. Had second place year before that. I think we started the team contest in 2004. The key is for everyone to score a buck regardless of the size, whatever is a trophy to you or your area. Nothing is too small and every inch is a big value to the team. It's all about having fun and sharing our experiences, not to mention ribbing the other teams. I for one am looking forward to everyone's year, successes and stories of the big ones.

I think someone who is internet savy and can check in with the site on a daily basis should be captain, so anyone is a candidate regardless ofactual hunting experience. If Chuck is game for that responsibility, I'm for him.

Kelly

RE: 21- Team Offical Thread

It's tough to get anything huge in my neck of the woods. The past 2 years I was good for 80-90 pts. Small 8pt 2 years ago, tall 6pt w/ broken tine last year. This will probably be the last year I get to hunt the property I've been on. It's under contract for development.

chucker34 08-23-2006 06:34 AM

RE: 21- Team Offical Thread

Again, nice deer Kelly. And congrats! Would be interesting to hear the story behind him when you get a chance. Is there an old HNI post out there that tells it? Or could you rehash when you are able?

And good points about this being for fun. So sure, I'll be team captain if you guys want me to. It would be an honor. I think the role is more about being able to check in every day and keep people talking, reminding everyone of the rules (i.e., make sure to have all the necessaries in your buck pic), and cheering everyone on. Though I won't wear a cheerleader outfit like Antler Eater and TJF. Those guys scare me.:DBut then again, they did both take massive bucks last year. Hmmm. Maybe they're on to something.

Welcome T in PA3! Whereabouts in Indiana are you from? I'm in the same boat as you, haven't been seeing a lot of big bucks on my trail cam pics, but 3 yearlings with nice racks that could be very big in a few years and a few phantom bucks that are probably pushing just over 100 that have been showing up late at night.

Like Kelly said, if everyone were to get a buck, any buck, we'd have a good chance at winning. But don't let that dictate your personal goals because this is for fun.

Good luck on getting that first buck this year Amhrdwd and everyone!

Chuck

RE: 21- Team Offical Thread

Like Kelly said, every inch counts. I passed on a really nice, wide 6 pointer in velvet last year because I knew there were bigger bucks there and wanted one for the contest. As you can guess, I never got a shot at the big boys. That was probably the best looking 6 I have ever seen and would have him on my wall because he was in full velvet. Would have given my team at least 80 points, maybe more.

With that being said, you guys can count on me for some points this year. My area typically doesn't have huge bucks but I have averaged 100-105 the last few years. If I get lucky with some of the big bucks I know are around, maybe more.

We're missing just two people: rile1564 and ddlyrfl3006. I PMed them yesterday but haven't heard back. Not everyone checks their e-mail or is online so often. How long should we give them before asking for alternates? A week? So until next Tuesday? I'm open to suggestions.

RE: 21- Team Offical Thread

I think RobPA had people wait a few weeks last year. Plus the teams have been picked before they were supposed to be. I thought it was going to happen Sept. 1st or something like that. They may not check in until then.

chucker34 08-23-2006 08:53 AM

RE: 21- Team Offical Thread

G2 Shooter, that's a good point. We should probably wait until at least a little while after that. I just got a little jumpy because some alternates were starting to get placed already. But I'd agree with you on this one!

Also, Rob keeps posting the importance of this rule, so here is a reminder. It is probably the most important one to remember:

.RULE NUMBER 7 STATES>>>>

7. You must have a pictured posted on the contest page within the Official Score Card thread to enter a deer. The bow must be in the picture and the entire deer must be in the picture, no skull pictures, no rack pictures...the buck, the bow, and yourself must be in the picture.....call me skeptical. This rule will be enforced this year, no exceptions with no apologies.

My bad. Typing too fast. Meant to address that to Trex! But where in PA are you from? I am outside of Willmar, which is in the west central part of MN - farm and lake country versus the northwoods.

RE: 21- Team Offical Thread

We may want to check with RobPA about alternates, I believe he's thinking about creating a team 37. If thats the case we should find out when he's planning on doing this and go from there. Otherwise I'd say wait until the original (9/1) deadline or a day later to let the others check in. Who knows why they haven't checked in yet, but I'd say give them a chance unless we are under the gun to choose alternates.

RE: 21- Team Offical Thread

Alright, we got Kentucky here, Indiana, Maine, New York, Iowa/IL (nice border by the way), Maryland?, Minnesota, PA, is that about it?

Two members to still check in. I'm going to download the cams on Saturday, hope to have a couple of dandy pics to share. Our season opens one week from Saturday and I've got the deer visiting a feeder in the center of the farm and bedding nearby. So, as early season scouting goes, they are about as predictable as I could hope for.

I'll post some pics if we have a big boy on the cam. If all goes well, we'll score early and put the fear into the other teams.

A little about me, I've been on here since I first started hunting in 1999. I moved onto my wife's family farm in 2000. Deer were everywhere, so I thought hunting might be fun to try. Since we had horses on the farm, a bow was a great choice, not to mention a great challenge. I practiced and practiced until I felt comfortable and on the second day of the season downed a 127" perfect little ten point. Since, I've become an addict. I've taken a pope and young deer every year with the exception of the last. Needless to say, I'm in deer paradise with great genetics and not much hunting pressure. I now expand my season to Kansas in oct/nov, which is a huge treat. I love this sport, love to hunt and spend the entire year either scouting, hunting, planning or scoring deer. Somewhere in there I work enough to afford to make it all happen.

Nice to be on the team and looking forward to getting to know each of you.

Harrisburg area. TMI & Gettysburg are in the area. Figure you out of staters might of have heard of either of those. ;)

RE: 21- Team Offical Thread

At Rob's suggestion in a post he made, I also tried to e-mail the two team members who haven't checked in yet. rile1564 didn't have one but ddlyrfl3006 did so I e-mailed him. I'd agree we should wait until at least the Sept. 1 date and then maybe try PMing and e-mailing again. Wouldn't want to leave someone out cause they can't get to the computer as often.

T in PA3, I have heard of all those places. Never been though: )

Sounds like you have some great motivation to hunt Kelly. We don't have nearly the population/genetics around here as yearling bucks usually don't survive gun season. Still, there are some dandy's out there. You just have to keep trying.

I checked my game cam yesterday and I have gotten a few nice bucks on it - all 8 pts or less - this year but nothing too huge yesterday. Some yearling bucks, yearling does, and a few mature does. But no fawns. This surprises me as usually, even the yearling does are with fawns the past few years.

Here is kind of a comical pic. Looks like they are dancing around at a square dance or something.:D

I live and hunt in central Maryland. Mostly in Howard, Carroll and Anne Arundel Counties. I hunt both public and private land. I was chasing some big deer on public land last year. I would guess between 120-130. Never got close enough for a shot. [&:]

In 03 and 04 I got two nice bucks. Here is a link to that thread.
http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1631004&mpage=1&key=

Here are some pics of deer on the private land.
OK, I see I can only add one pic per post so the other one will follow.
Hopefully I will get a chance at one this season.
This one is an 8 pointer.

Chuckar,
What type of land is that pic taken? There's absolutly no vegetation on the ground!! Not used to seeing a wooded area like that.

Downloaded the camera a couple days early...enjoy!!

Been watching these two guys come in and out for two months. 9 days til opener and they are moving right under my stand just before or at daybreak. I just hope they are a little late Sept 2nd.

RE: 21- Team Offical Thread

Good Lord Kelly, those are some nice bucks. And great looking bucks/mounts G2. I would be happy to get a shot at one like those this year!

T in PA3, my core hunting area is where we live actually. We have about 3 acres of woods and several neighbors to each side with about the same amount of woods (a few sloughs and clearing here and there).

I think there is a lack of vegetation in this area because the leaves cover the forest floor in most places and the sunlight is minimal under the canopy. I also have crushed up seveal mineral and salt blocks into the dirt in the middle and the deer seem to hang around for awhile when they visit and tear up the soil.

RE: 21- Team Offical Thread

Last year we had a team name - mailmen - and a slogan - we always deliver.

How about something like "Team BlackJack - Buck or Bust! No Surrender!"

- ala the BJ term bust meaning to lose, or going over 21, and the BJ term surrender, meaning to fold before playing the full hand and losing half your bet. So, we never quit, we'll end up with a buck or tag soup. What do you think? Corny, but its the start of what I hope will be many more ideas from you guys!
