RE: Team 30 Check-In
Hey guys, I am heading back to PA tonight to hunt down there. They NY opener is next weekend and I will be splitting my weekends at that point between PA on Saturdays and NY on Sundays.
APAJaws and I headed to my property in PA and hunted Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday (no sunday hunting in PA). Opening morning brought a couple fawns under my stand. In the evening APAJaws and I sat in a ground blind together with me as camera man, and him as the shooter. We had seen several good bucks coming out into this field all summer long. Below is a picture that shows where the deer are coming out, and where the blind is setup. Anyhow about 6:30 came around and 3 mature does and 3 fawns came out along with a bruiser of a 7 point. Unfortunately I was having a heck of a time getting the camera to focus through the blind mesh in the window, and when I tried to shift to get into an open window one of the does and fawns busted me....... The good news is that the buck didn't see anything and he came out again Sunday night and was within 15 yards of the blind (we glassed him from the other end of the field), and Monday night too when APAJaws was in there alone but the buck didn't come any closer than about 60 yards that night. Hopefully tomorrow evening I will get a crack at him. I will be alone so there won't be any video footage, but hopefully I can get some video footage of a doe being taken later this season. ![]() |
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Cool looking setup. Good luck with that video. I have never been able to get anything on tape. Seems when we try nothing is ever around.
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Looks like we lost a little bit of our chatter. Not sure what all was said. I site does seem a little faster but I think it still dogs at some times. Still a lot of people hitting it this time of year.
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
well i scored my first this morning but alas it was only a doe , so no score for the team YET!!! have seen several nice bucks but nothing closer than 50-60 yards. so this morning after 45 minutes in the stand i took my first of the year ,she went about 50 yards and dropped . autopsy showed a hole in the heart. shot her at 6:45 waited 15 to get down had her in the truck at 7:15 and was home by 7:30 . now thats mykindof morning in the stand. only wish it had been a buck
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Wow, is the site loading faster. I have not been out to hunt in a few days. I am planning on getting out tommorrow morning and evening. I think that Justin and I are going to film.
Rick, cool looking set-up, keep the photos going, it is cool to see everyones set-ups. |
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Nothing to report for me either, just lots of raccoons and hawks. Saw a bg buck this morning at the entrance to the field I was hunting, unfortunately he was in the headlights. Looks like this coming week is gong to be better as far as weather goes. Good luck!
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Talked to my bro, and he saw nothing but bears again tonight. Damn things!!!
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
So where are the others on this team? I will be getting back out hunting in about 10 days. Just wanna wait for the rut to get closer. Seems like we are missing several guys on here.
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Hey guys. The area I'm hunting is covered with scrapes and rubs. All within an area 75yds in diameter. I hunted this stand several times w/o seeing the buck/bucks that were making all the sign, only seeing does. So one evening last week I invited my father-in-law to huntthe area with me thinking he would get a shot on a doe(considering it is his property, and he's not been seeing deer where he's hunting) Wouldn't you know it. This 10 or 12 pt. 200+lb monster steps out only 15yds from his stand which is 55yds from my stand and the deer makes him out and bolts before he can even draw. To make matters worse, this monster was on a b-line to the scrapes I'm hunting over.Needless to say, I probably won't see this deer again until the rut, if I'm lucky. My father-in-law has permanantly moved his stand to an area only 125yds from where I am. [&:]I'm gonna be a little perturbed ifhe kills this deer, considering I found his primary scrape area.
I'll keep you guys posted. I'd love to take this deer for myself and the team. |
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Hey guys, I went out tonight and did not see a thing. I did go and hand another stand today. I think it will be a producer. I am going to hand a few more stands in the morning and take advantage of this rain were having. A few more tweaks and I will be ready for primetime.
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
I had planed to get out tonight and hunt as well, but work did not permit it unfortunately. It was a gorgeous night, the wind layed right down and would have been perfect for my favorite stand. This weekend should be good though, a little change in weather finally.
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Hey Mike did you get to that new Cabelas last weekend?? Looks like I will be heading that way this Saturday. Gonna be the last NON-hunting weekend for me until end of November. Bummer you couldn't get out last night. Sounds like the weather would have been great.
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Oh yeah I went to the Cabelas. It is an awesome store. It was so damn busy though that it was hard to get any real shopping done. The mounts are unrivaled though in my opinion. The only thing I was alittle disappointed on was the treestand area. The whole store has huge vaulted 50' ceilings, and then the treestands are stuck in a corner with low ceilings so tehre are no ladders or anything setup. Otherwise, very cool store!
Tonight I'mhittin' the outdoors, gonna be chilly, but Ican't wait!!! |
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Im going Fri. morning. taking a nap then playing some football.
but an update on my last resort land in Natchez, MS...I just checked a trail camera we put out in aug. I have a nice 8 pointer(maybe 9)in a few pics. here is one. |
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Well, I got a doe last night finally!!I hit the woods at about 4:30 and the wind was howling out of the southwest which is a perfect wind for the stand I was planning on hunting. Ihad no activity for about an hour and then some deer made their way out into the field. At the far end I could see a monster 8,around 140" but the closest he got was maybe 75 yards and then he milled around and disappeared back into the timber. I had been concentrating on him, and I looked down and there was a big mature doe about 30yards away. Thebig buck was gone, so I decided to get some meat! She fed into the perfect spot and I let her have it! Perfect double lunger, just like our name implies! She only made it 30 yards and piled up. I saw her the whole way as she never left the field. Lumenok lit up, complete pass through. The pressure is off now, and I can hunt racks!!! We have seen 3 different big ones now, so hopefully I can connect on one of them for our team. I'l work on getting some pics up when I get home from work today.
P.S. People pay more for a ride at the carnival that isn't as good as the one I got up in the tree last night with the wind blowing 25 mph!!! |
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Great job Mike. I know what you mean about the pressure being off. Be sure to connect with one of those big boys and that will offset the little one I got. I am still very happy that I got that velvet buck as it is still in GREAT shape. I am freezing it which I was told was the best way to perserve it. Gonna have to leave it in there for a long time. Anyway congrats on the doe and keep at it. There are many more out there.
Phall that is a nice looking buck. Good luck tomorrow. |
RE: Team 30 Check-In
congrats mike. nice deer phall. i too just got a new buck on the cam
![]() |
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Cnapes - how is that camera working for you? It is a Wildview right? You may have read my experience with cuddeback on the gear review forum. Cuddeback's customer service SUCKS. I will be looking at new cameras for next year and the Wildview is one I am thinking about. Thanks for any help. Oh and that is a nice buck there. Hope you see him in the daylight sometime.
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
I hope you can get that one as well, would be a huge one for the team!!
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
yeah i hope i see him maybe during the rut. that camera is actually a moultrie and it has been working real good for me
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Hey guys,
Things are starting to heat up I have seen 7 bucks in the last 3 days, nothing of any real size though. That is a nice buck on the trail cam above! Lets hope we get him for our team. Well I will keep you informed, I have a few more stands to hang and I will be ready for prime time. |
RE: Team 30 Check-In
well went once this weekend...killed a hog. sawone doe. its too deadgum hot...plus i brought my girlfriend and she was cutting up and laughing the whole time. So i wasnt really hunting, just out there having a good time...but there is nothing wrong with that.
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
phall you are right. Have a GREAT time. Congrats on the hog. Now you will have some pork to mix with the venison you are going to get and make up some sausage.
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Well, tonight I let go a real nice 8 pointer about 125 -130 inches, I am trying to hold out for something larger this year. I am heading for WI for a few days. I will everyone up-to-date with my progress.
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
You the man Todd, I'm praying for a 130"er right now..lol
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Coming back to old WI during the IL season there eh? Good for you Todd. I don't think I could pass up something like that but it would be because I have never had something like that come by. Until this little 3 (Velvet buck) this year I have let EVERYTHING walk justPRAYING that something would make it to the next season and be bigger. This one was actually the first BUCK I have shot with a bow in about 15 years. Most season I just take a doe and that is all. Anyway GOOD LUCK.
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
You are a better man than me Todd!! HE would have been dead if it were me,and my biggest by bow at that! I'm going to head out tonight and hopefully smoke one of the two big ones I have seen. The wind is going to be favorable at least. I will be sure to report if I have any success!
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
I hit the outdoors tonight and it was a great night to sit. It had been misting all day and it continued into the evening so things were super quiet. Just after I got situated in my stand I had a 7-point come by. If I had been home in the UP, I'd be cleaning him up right now, but he wasn't big enough for an IL buck. Still alot of fun to get one in that close. I later saw a doe and fawn that came by real close and walked over my boot tracks without knowing anything was unusual, so I guess Scent-Killer worked tonight. Two coyotes trotted past right at last light but no shot presented itself. Overall, great night in the woods, as are all of them, but no harvest for the team.
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Mike sounds like a great night. Too bad that buck wasn't big enough. Get back out there and find one of those that you are looking for. I will be heading back out this weekend and every weekend now for a while. Not sure what is out there this season as that cuddeback camera was down all year. My property is about 80 miles away so I don't get to swing by it every night to see what is around. If nothing else I will try to get another doe. So far we have 2 bucks and 4 doe off of 80 acres and AFTER all of that I saw 16 deer walk into a corn field and ALL were doe and fawns. Just too many of the dang things.
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
My camera didn't work as I wanted it to either. I think I had it tilted skyward a little bit as all I got were 126 pictures of rain. That property where it was is about 70 miles away, so I also don't get over there too much, although on Friday I'm heading there!
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Did you ever read all that happened to me with my Cuddeback? Here is a link to the writeup:
http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1722488 Still have not gotten it back. Really not sure what to expect when I do. I will be posting what happens as I do want everyone to know what there customer service is like. I figure if only a fraction of the people considering getting one don't because of me the the money they made off of me will be lost that way. I feel that is the only way to get these companies to listen to the little guys. They need to treat EVERY customer as if they were their ONLY customer. |
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Oh and good luck this weekend Mike and everyone else heading out. Rut time is coming on quickly.
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
I did read about your cuddeback, and that sucks. I have always thought about getting one and never pulled the trigger because of the price. I just think of the things I could get with that much money being put elsewhere, like camo and stuff. I'm sure one day I will break down though, unless of course your story becomes the norm with the company. This weekend does look for weather-wise so hopefully I can get a buck for our team.
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
When you do decide to get a camera spend less on a cheaper one. Then if it fails after a couple of years you are not out so much. I posted that same thing on Archerytalk and several others posted that they were having the same problem. Some even posted that on here but when they lost all the posts from the end of sept and early oct they were lost.
Well good luck this weekend. I think we are going to get rained on but I hope it is just a light rain. That is always when I see more deer anyway. |
RE: Team 30 Check-In
I am thinking the same thing as far as money for cameras goes. I just have a hard time spending that much with the potential for theft/malfunction/weatherwear and tear. I bought a Moultrie this year for $100 and it works good, more operator than anything else! My brother has a Moultrie as well and his also works flawlessly. I'm really not sure what Cuddeback does that makes them so expensive, when the pics from my camera look just as good, so clarity is not the price raiser. Who knows.
I think I am going to get wet on Saturday as well, but as of yet, I haven't melted, so I'll still be out! Gotta get my wife a deer. I wish she had been with last night because that doe would have been in for a rude awakening! It will be her first with the bow when she gets one, so hopefully it is soon! If a monster walks in though and we are together, its going to be tough deciding who shoots! |
RE: Team 30 Check-In
That Moultrie is one that I am thinking about. The other would be the wildview. Tell your wife I wish her all the best getting that first one. It would be a tough call if a monster comes by. Might be in your best interest to let HER shoot. Maybe just leave your bow behind and film her hunt. Don't know what I would do.
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Filming her is definitely in teh cards as well. I have heard good things about the Wildview cameras, though I can't speak from experience. There are so damn many now, its tough to choose. The Wildlife Eye is the neatest thing out there, but again, the price. I just need to make more money and not work at all so that I can get all these toys and have time to play with them. Thanks for the regards for my wife by the way. I'll keep you posted!
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Camera's are nuts. Like you said there are so many out there. That is why these companies need to take care of the customers that they have. Oh well. Then you have things like the '07 bows. WOW is all I can say. I don't see any way I will be replacing my Trykon as it took about 8 months to get all tricked out the way I like it. I will be going out and shooting the new Hoyt's and that new one from Bowtech. Gotta at least try all that is out there.
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Pretty good news from me...Im will be going to Rifle Point, the private trophy hunting place next weekend. I am leaving friday night after my football game, driving to Natchez, MS and will be hunting sat morn/evening and sun morn. hopefully I will have something for yall when I get back. I will pass on pretty much anything I see this weekend, except for a doe.
|
RE: Team 30 Check-In
Go get'em there phall. Don't pass on something just because of this team. If you see something that YOU would be proud taking then go for it.
I am heading out tonight for the weekend. We have a mini 4 day gun season going on so I am not planning on seeing a whole lot. We can (Thank God) use bows during the gun hunt where I am at so at least I will get out. |
