phall2 - I can understand that. I have seen more 4 and 6 pointers this year then I have in the 5 years that we have hunted this.

AK - I do wish you could have gotten checked in. That would have helped out alot. Congrats on a beautiful looking buck.

YEAH! Congrats Rick. So what about the "he isn't huge". Man you got a nice buck there. And you even did it with a Mathews.:D Just having fun. Is that you shot placement by the sight? If so then I think all 3 of us so far have made some great shots. Get that guy scored and get him on the score thread. This is the best a team I have been on has ever done and this is my 3rd year.
Actuall that isn't the shot I put on him there. I actually put a high and back shot on him quartering away and managed to thread it high behind the last rib on the close side, and out the armpit of the far side. I got diaphragm, liver, both lungs, and even clipped the heart. He went about 10 feet. I also shot a doe last Sat but they don't count here......

Thanks again guys, he isn't huge but he put on a great show for me. He scraped and thrashed a tree within 30 yards of me, and was actually walking with the hair on his back standing up with his ears laid back doing that stiff legged PO'd walk in response to my grunts from when I initally saw him. He was one of the most memorable hunts I have ever had and because of this he is a trophy to me. He went 75 3/8".

Hey guys,

I am sorry that I have not checked in I have been hunting everyday since October 27th.

I cant tell a lie so here goes....

I stalked up on a real nice 3 year old buck waited 30 minutes for him to stand up and did not make the best shot of my life. We spent alot of time trailing him but we came up with nothing. I'm not happy with the story but it is the truth.

I ended up catching up with this buck, in WI.

I am still hunting IL pretty hard, I have a few days left until the shotgun season starts. Then it is back up to WI for Rifle.

Nice buck Todd. Looks like good old WI paid off for you eh? You know what we say up here. WI is Illinois largest park. Those are some great brow tines. Have you scored him yet? Congrats.

Way to go TODD!!! That should definitely help our score! I'm heading up to the UP tonight for gun season starting tomorrow. We have seena couple decent deer on trail cameras so hopefully we can get one of them on the ground. Good luck to everyone else. I will be off of here for about 6 days, butI will definetely report when I get back!

Best of luck to you Mike. Our gun season opens this Saturday and goes for 23 days in my area.[:'(][:@]:( I will go out with my Dad and since he bought me the rifle years ago I still sit with it. I was going to use the bow but with it being just my Father and I, I figure I should use the gun that he bought me for gun season. Should be a great time but we never do shoot any.

Well,

IL Shotgun season is next and then I go back to WI for Rifle season. Good luck everyone this is the time of year we live for.

wihunter402 11-17-2006 06:26 AM

RE: Team 30 Check-In

Yes good luck everyone. Did you get yours scored yet Todd? I think the time of year that I live for ends today. Tomorrow the WI does open the rifle season. In my area it is 23 days of hell. I go out with my Dad this weekend to spend some time with him but as for seeing deer not much goes on. The people south of us shoot EVERYTHING that moves. Really sucks. Doesn't matter if it is buck or doe and since we are in the 4 tags a day and NOT earn a buck all the little ones are sure to be doomed this year. So I pretty much hunt opener to gun opener and then I am done.[:'(]

GOOD HUNT THIS MORN!

I got in the stand this morning and right as i got situated a doe ran right under my stand and trotted off. I couldnt of gotten a shot on her anyway it was still pretty dark and she didnt stop moving. About a half an hour later another doe walked out about 200 yards away from me with two bucks following her. One an 8 for sure, the other was prob an 8 too. About 5 min later the two bucks began to fight. They fought for about 15 min. Then one of them started making a scrape on a low branch. Most buck activity I have seen this season. I had my rifle and my bow in the stand but decided not to shoot the doe with my rifle because I wanted to watch the two bucks. It was an amazing hunt even though nothing went down.

I didnt shoot one ofthe bucks with my rifle because I thought it was right under what I was allowed to shoot.

RE: Team 30 Check-In

Greetings from the North Country gentleman! This rifle has been decent so far. I took a decent 8 point yesterday morning, but that has been the only buck worth shooting we have seen so far. We have seen 7 different spikes and two forks, so there are definitely some young bucks around. I saw two wolves today, which I haven't seen before, so that was pretty neat. I have to head back to IL tomorow, but back up here on Weds, so perhaps I can tag one bigger one! Weather has been great, little dusting of snow. Good luck to all you guys that are still out!

wihunter402 11-20-2006 08:21 AM

RE: Team 30 Check-In

Cool guys. I got an 8 with the gun as well. I have not shot a deer with rifle in years and was out with my Dad. I spotted him in the woods (I was in the field) about 275 yards away from one point to the other. Well I have a Rem 700 .30-06 with a 3x9 scope and I have made that shot before so I touched one off. I broke his heart (instead of taking the breath away with an arrow) and he STILL went just over 100 yards. I have a laser range finder to get all the distance. Anyway he rough scored in at 108 but I will do a better job when I get him back from the taxidermy guy. I had to do it as I never know how many more hunts I will be on with my Dad. This was just him and I and will had a great time together.

Todd you get that one of yours scored yet??

RE: Team 30 Check-In

Hey guys,
I hope all is well with you. I may have screwed up my chances to score for the team. While hunting a couple of weeks ago, I had two does running by my stand and I voice grunted to stop them. I shot the one that presented the best shot and she piled up 35yds from where I shot her. Well, by the time I climbed down and walked over to her, she had grown a set of balls...turned out I had shot a button buck. Does this count as my first buck kill?
If that wasn't bad enough, myfather-in-law shot the buck I've been hunting all season. The buck has an18 1/2 in. inside spread, 8 1/2 g2s, 6 1/2 in. g3s & brow tines. I don't know what he scores, but hes definitely one worth mounting. My father-in-law knew I was hunting a nicebuck and he cutme off byrifle hunting the trail coming in to where my stand was. Over 300 acres to hunt and he pulls that crap. Talk about being p.o.ed. It is his property, so what can I do...other than knife his tire.:D

wihunter402 11-21-2006 07:51 PM

RE: Team 30 Check-In

Thanks for the update. As for the button buck I do not think they count. IF they do then I have seen a couple of other teams that have guys that shot buttons and would have to count them. I am pretty sure that it has to be a LEGAL buck for your state. In WI that is 3 inches on one side or more. Here I would have to register that deer of yours as a doe so that is what it should count as.

As for the big buck keep on trying. Maybe a bigger one is in the area right now and you can get that one. I know how is is but until you put an arrow in it it belongs to anyone. I do feel bad for you but get out and keep at it. Good luck to you.

Greetings gentleman! I'm back from the north country and back to the computer. Lots of deer, just does though. Weather sure was messed up too, we had a high of like 13 one day, then 51 the next. I think I am going to get out a couple more times with the bow though down here in IL to see if I can't get a late season monster or another doe. I'm getting a little burned out though. I haven't hunted this much, ever, I don't think. This coming weekend my brother and I are going steelhead fishing, so that will be a fun change of pace. I also booked my first Canadian whitetail hunt!!!! I'm already excited, not sure how I am going to make until next November. Hope everyone had a good thanksgiving. Take care and good luck!

Hey guys, I got one with a rifle as well. Probably would have gone 110+ as well as an 8, however he only had one side!! I didn't realize it when I shot (he was 200 yards away), but he was a nice 3.5 year old mature animal. It has been a good year this year so far.

wihunter402 11-29-2006 03:53 PM

RE: Team 30 Check-In

Congrats Rick. I really like that brow tine AND the way he is crossing his legs.;) Not much new here. Looks like the bow season is over for me. I am starting to play with the Trykon already to get set for next season. I got cams to switch it from 80% 28.5 inch to 65% 29 inch. Also going to try a few things that are supposed to get a couple of extra feet per second out of it. I know it helped some just getting Gibblet strings on it before the season started.:D

ToddGraf 11-29-2006 07:00 PM

RE: Team 30 Check-In

Congrats Rick. Well IL shotgun season was good for me, photo below.... Wisconsin rifle season was not as good, I let a lot of deer go and ended up missing a nice one. Dont even ask, I have no idea what I did wrong. Just some hair, no blood. Second Season in IL opens in the morning so I am going to give it another shot, one more tag left. Justin and I are going to give it our best to try to get a harvest on video. I will keep you posted on what happens.

Other good news.... The buck that I lost in Wisconsin with my bow, we ended up getting during the rifle season.

Wow, busy day around here! Congrats Rick and Todd! I wish we could bowhunt during gun season here in IL!! I would sure be out there with this weather coming in tonight. Should be a good weekend for the gun season though. I'm going steelhead fishing instead. My brother finally scored on a buck back home in the UP on Monday, he had been in a 5 year drought, and I had taken an 8-point every year of his drought, so I was kinda feeling a little bit bad about shooting nice bucks...but not bad enough to not shoot!.. Good luck this weekend everyone!

Saw some nice 6 points and a beautiful 8 point too. Nothing but spikes, does, and a 5 pointin range though. Where I was hunting you have to kill a 6 point or better. I saw 23 deer sat. morning

Keep at it Pike. Hey by the way my son just finished up Navy Boot Camp. He told me that Navy stood for Never Again Volunteer Yourself. He didn't know about Army and he said the Air Force is just weird. Marines however he did know. Muscles Are Required Intelligence Not Essential Sir. We all found those funny.

Good Luck to you the rest of the season and THANK YOU for joining the Marines and serving our country. May God keep you and all our troops safe.

Keep at it Pike! I'm looking forward to getting back into the deer woods again here in IL. I was fishing last weekend and caught some great brown trout out of Milwaukee, but it still isn't deer hunting! I think on Saturday we're going to do a little pheasant/deer combo. The weather looks good, so it would be fun. I've nothad the opportunity to bowhunt in the snow too much,so I'm looking forward to it. Good luck to the rest of you guys with tags!

thanks. Army stands for Aint Readytobea Marine Yet. haha. I actually met with my recruiter today. Right now Im trying to decide if I want to do college first, Reserves and do college full time, or do active duty and take college classes whenever I can.

I will be hunting sat.

RE: Team 30 Check-In

Tough call Pike. Matt got in on the GI Bill so when he is done (IF he decides to stop after 4 years) then he has that for college. Just do what I told him, do what YOU want to do. Don't let others tell you what you should be doing.

Good luck Saturday. Knock down a big one.

Drew back on 2 deer this morning. Spike and a doe. Decided to not shoot the spike even though I havnt shot anything all year. I was very close to letting the arrow fly. Then i drew back on a doe and a branch was in the way and after that she never gave me another shot.

wihunter402 12-13-2006 07:07 AM

RE: Team 30 Check-In

Looks like we are still waiting on Todd's score yet. I pm'd some of the others but I have heard nothing back. I know you pm'd some Mike. Did you ever hear back from any? Maybe we have some scores we don't even know about.:D

YooperMike 12-15-2006 08:22 AM

RE: Team 30 Check-In

I actually heard back from everyone that I sent messages to, unfortunately no one had any monsters to report. I think I may hit the outdoors on Sunday. I wanted to go tomorrow but the wind is going to be howling like 30 mph and I think we are going to try and get a pheasant first. I hope to get out one more time with teh bow and maybe smoke a doe. Then we'll switch to turkey preparation. I've been practicing my slate and mouth calls, and getting more turkey-sounding everyday, so hopefully I can get a big boss gobbler to agree with me! Good luck to those of you that are still out there.

phall2 12-15-2006 08:52 AM

RE: Team 30 Check-In

I started turkey hunting 2 years ago...shot my first gobbler last yead inch and a quarter spurs and a 9 and a half inch beard. I love it. I didnt call in that bird but I did call in two more birds, friend spooked one, and one got hung up at about 50 yards.

YooperMike 12-15-2006 10:22 AM

RE: Team 30 Check-In

I'm pumped to turkey hunt, never done it before so hopefully I can get on one. I will be happy if I can get one to respond, let alone shoot one!

wihunter402 12-18-2006 08:04 AM

RE: Team 30 Check-In

Where I hunt we have LOTS of turkeys. My biggest problem is that there are so many hens that it is very difficult to get a Tom to answer and come in. Several times I have been working a Tom only to have a hen come walking past me heading right at the Tom I am talking too.[:@]

phall2 12-20-2006 09:55 AM

RE: Team 30 Check-In

I still need to get a few deer before I worry about turkey season. haha. Im going out this evening. Theres a pretty good bit of rain and its supposed to get worse in the evening so Im prob just gonna bring the 7 Mag out there so I dont have to worry about long blood trails.

phall2 12-22-2006 08:36 PM

Rattled in an 8 point today. I killed him with a rifle though. He was 220 lbs with an 18 inch spread. I will post pics soon.
