RE: 34-Team "Heavy Horned" Official Thread
Well guys I blew it again[:@]. I got to the woods about 5:45 and got set-up on the side of a hill over loooking the swamp where I had seen several bucks before. About 8am I hadn't seen anything and was feeling like I chose the wrong spot with the high winds we had yesterday 18-25mph. So I got up and walked to the top of the ridge looked around and the walked back down and was about 80yds west of where I had been sitting.
I see something coming across the swamp and its a very nice 8pt he stops at a bush that I had ranged earlier at 23yds looks around and proceeds to run rightup the trail 10ft. fromwhere I had been sitting. Unbelievable!! I've got to start trusting my gut instinct! If I would trust my instinct I would already have both buck tags filled!! I guess thats hunting. I think I should be in good shape for the rut with all the deer I've been seeing. Sorry I blew it again! |

Sorry?? Hammerman you got nothing to be sorry for. That's why they call it hunting and not getting. Sounds like your pretty well on track with sightings and the like so stick with it and we may get some points on the board yet.
Sorry is my missing a 25 yard dunk shot on a big boy. Now that's sorry. If he had been paper or a 3D target I would have whacked him good instead of wounding and never finding him. Still hanging my head in shameover that one... |

Well no points but I got some meat in the freezer!!
I set up on the hill where I had seen the 2 small bucks 2 weeks ago. I had sat there about 1.5hrs when I saw movement across the swamp. I look throught the binos and see that its a doe so I just watch her for a few minutes. She then started into the swamp but walking away from me so I decided to try my stalking skills. The wind was perfect so I started across the swamp making my way to a downed tree about 30 yards away from her. Then she walked down into the creek that makes its way through the swamp, it's about 4ft deep. When she went into it I started walking closer to the creek but now I'm out in the open about 20yds from the creek. I see her head come up and I came to full draw, she takes about three steps out of the creek stopped and looked right at me, unfortunately she turned quartering to me. I pick my spot and released the arrow I see the hit a little high but when she ran I saw blood pouring out of the exit hole. I heard her fall about 60 yds away. When I got to her I realized she must have been quartering more than I thought because the arrow exited the rear quarter but hit the main artery but it also caught the top of one lung. The bad part of the story is when I rolled her over it wasn't a doe but a button buck!! I looked at that deer for 10min through the binos and thought for sure it was a doe! Oh well!! It was a great experience and I put some meat in the freezer. |

I'm back from another weekend, but the weather was atrocious! I could barely stand up in the stand due to the wind. We had rain, snow, and hail, all of it moving sideways because of the wind.
The weather forced me to try some stalking, at one point I turned a corner on the 4 wheeler trail and was 20' from a doe facing me with her head down, I backed up and waited for her to walk out broadside in front of me but she didn't. After 20 min I thought she was gone so I took another look around the corner and we made eye contact, she took off with no shot. On the bright side I got some work done and am ready for the next batch of bad weather. I took yesterday afternoon and built myself a ground blind, its closer to the trail than I would like, but downwind and has lots of cover (the wind always blows from the NW here). I've got a week of work than I'm off to rifle camp for a week, but depending on how that goes I may cut it short to get back to where I bowhunt, rifle camp is really more about the socializing and evenings, when it comes to serious deer hunting I'd rather have my bow. |

Great work buckeye, fantastic deer and story!!! Way to put us on the board. Congrats. By the way, I don't see him on the score card thread, don't forget that little detail ;) I will get him posted up there soon as I get a good tape on him. I was pretty tired last night. I had slightly over a mile drag last night in the steep ridges of SE Ohio. It was to wet for the 4 wheeler to pull him up the hills, all it would do is spin and throw mud and debris. So we had to do it the good ole fashion way. Thank god every hill had a down side as well :D BTW the drag out took nearly 3 hours (including field dressing and a few pics) with the help of my buddy Frank. |

Sorry man, I just couldn't resist!! |

Well, tomorrow is an important day for me, its my only chance to bow hunt early/pre rut. After tomorrow I'm off to gun camp, followed by a caribou hunt. I really hope I can taga bucktomorrow, if not my next real chance won't be till December. I'll post some pics next weekend, hopefully they aren't all of rifle deer.
Wish me luck. |
