24/7 I'm shooting an 06 Mathews Switchback XT, 28" 66lbs, 410 grain Beman Black Max MFX 400s

However, After conversing with DaveC here a bit, I might have to order a half dozen Easton Axis 340s.

It sounds like 340 might be a better spine for me to shoot fixed heads with and I was alway more confident in my old Axis shafts than I am with the Bemans.

Trembow check out the aluminum target arrows that Easton puts out. You could go with a 26/12. That will give you the edgeincase your shot placementisjust outside the vitals!:D

Good luck 24/7, we'll be joining you in a tree soon.

A team captain?
I don't think I've ever seen it discussed in thisthread.
So what does the team captain do & who wants it?

Alright guys sorry I've been absent for a while, work is kickin' my arse. As for Team captain I vote DaveC. As for the arrow spice talk, I'm shooting Axis 340's at 70lbs on both my razortec and my Trykon. Both arrows are 28" long and this spine has been super effective. 2 weeks ago I bare shaft tuned my razortec and at 20 yards the results were awesome. I shot a bare shaft, a field point, and a slick trick. All 3 heads were within an inch of eachother. My buddy is shooting 27" 400axis and they are also working very well.

RE: 31-Team Drop Tine Bombers

Thanks DWD2001.I hope you get that work taken care of by the time your season starts. Gotta love bare shaft results like that.
I might just try those Axis next time around. I like how you have both of your bows set up near the same, oddly enough my Tribute has a Drop zone & Patriot a shakey hunter.
You are shooting 28" arrows, what is your draw length?

24/7, I've heard a lot of good results from the Hammerheads and two guys that I have a lot of respect for in my states archery circles use them. Have you had a chance to see how well they work?
I always thought the stricknine would be one mean head for someone shooting 125's.

OkieA, your set up sure will getter done. Have you purchased the heads yet or still tossing as coin on which to hunt with? Those new Mx-4's from Muzzy would be my choice. I almost grabbed a pack at the shop a couple of weeks ago, but I have too many unused heads already. I hope our exploding pig population takes care of that some. Nothing wrong with the G-5's, I just prefer the hole a 4 blade head opens up.

I looked a round a little and didn't see a definition of what is expected or required of the team Captain.
I don't want to step on any toes, but seeing how time is running out (season ishere in some places) I guess I will go ahead and place my name in the slot for it. If anyone else wants it, let me know.

RE: 31-Team Drop Tine Bombers

Hey guys a little update on my seaso. hunted behind my house this morning. took about 15 minutes to walk 300 yards so i didnt spook any deer. i hunted in a ground blind i made last night.it was just getting to where i could see my sight pins and i was finishing setting up. IUt was a nice calm morning. I reach to grab an arrow and i hear a deer snort about 20 yards behind me. I look around and see a doe running away. Had i been in a tree or been setup a little earlier, i might have got her. Oh well, its only opening day.

DaveC - I have seen how the hammerheads work. my dad has used them for a long time and has killed lots of deer with them. His buddy also used them last year. they swear by them. The deer he shoots with that 2" dia. have easy to follow blood trails, thats for sure.

Well, i saw 12 deer around home last night and i would hunt there but the weather is supposed to be bad here so we are going up north to my dad's friend's cabin and 200 acres. Hopefully ill have some action up there. we usually do. its probably the last time we'll be going there since he is selling it to buy some other land. good luck guys.

Thanks for the support guys!

Trying to make me older sooner? I was born on the23rd of December[8D].

I work 4 on 4 off 12 hr shifts and spend a lot of the 4-on checking in around my daily task.

I'm not avatar savy:(.

Trembow, if you don't have the time or feel like messing with the 340's this close to seasonI can tell you from experience the 400's will work IF you switch to stingers. (assuming the 400's shoot a field point just fine)

My neighbor ran into this same scenario last year when his phantoms were shooting off center due to a weak spine of his 400's. When he shot his stingers they were on,the phantoms are an overall larger head and grab more wind requiring a more perfect spine (no side to side on the way down range).
I have nothing against the phantoms and have used them in the past; in fact my avatar buck was phantomized. BUT they are touchier to tune. The stingers on the other hand are very forgiving.
Just thought I'd throw a cheaper option your way.

Hey guys, congrats DaveC on your newly acquired position. I've been working a tiny bit on the avatar, I'm trying to incorporate the mushroom cloud that one of you guys proposed at the beginning. Had a buddy get married this weekend and I'm trying to get all my construction projects "ahead" before deer season gets here. I'll try to have one knocked out by the end of the week. These are the worst to weeks of my life.... AHhhhhhhh

DWD2001, I like the looks of it and saved it.
Not trying to be picky but just want to ask if it would be feasible to make the names large enough to read once it is in the avatar?

Looking at your avatar there looks to be enough space in the white to fill in with the names in a larger font.

Irealize you're a busy man, so don't take the above as a begger being chooser thing, just wondering if it's doable.

24/7 hunter, sorryI didn't post about your hunt before. Almost sounds to me like she heard you come in and crept up to see what the comotion was about[8D], pesky does!! good luck on your next hunts!

RE: 31-Team Drop Tine Bombers

Well, I saw one doe up north but couldnt get a shot. I hunted last night. at about 5 o clock a doe and fawn came into the field about 20 yards from me. i drew back and figured she was at 25 yards. my sight is at 20 so i aim a little high and what happens? she ducks the arrow! i would have probably hit a littlke high anyway though. She ran off a little ways, looks back at me and snorts which i actually think was laughing at me for missing her. im going after one again tonight.

I like the avatar DWD2001. Works for me if everyone else likes it.

RE: 31-Team Drop Tine Bombers

Well keep at it 24/7, you'll get one. Aim for the heart, that way if they duck you still get both lungs, if they don't you get heart.

DaveC, I'm planning on changing the names and some other minor things as well. I didn't realize how small the avatar had to be or I would have done it differently... oh well. It'll be cooler tonight since I've got the program pretty well figured out. That all comes after some arrow slingin' tonight of course.

Well I finnialy got a couple tree stands hung, but I took the ladders out with me. I am so sceard they will get stolen! the stand I can lock and no one can get at it unless they go through a lot of greif putting up a ladder or screw in steps then they have to cut the lock. So this way I feel pretty confident that when I go back they will be there. I put a bunch of corn out we cant bait in Ma so I figured if I get them comming in for the whole corn now and keep it up till about a week before the season they may keep comming back ollking for it. Man I had to do a bunch of cutting for the first one I worked on that first stand for 3 hours. The second one mabey 1/2 hour not a lot of cutting to do. I still have 10 more stands and will try to get another one up before work tommorow. (I work 3-11 PM)
24/7 now you got your jitters out of the way its time to put some meat in the freezer. Good luck

RE: 31-Team Drop Tine Bombers

So is anyone holding out for a true monster or maybe a personal best?

Myself it would depend on which lease I'm hunting on.
On the piney woods lease a 3 1/2 yo buck would be a true trophy for the area (not many see it pass their 2nd b-day). So a decent rack from this lease would mean a lot to me. this will be our tenth year on the place and so farI have taken 2-9's & 1-8 (not high scorers). I've passed plenty and let one 10 slip through my fingers a few years back:(.
The Southwest Texas lease- I'm going to try to hold out for a personal best on this place. The area is known for pencil horned deer, so a high score isn't real easy to come by. There appears to be plenty of pigs to keep my arrows occupied though.
We have lax managementrules, but they prefer to let younger deer walk. If he tops my high rackbuck he'll probably be taking a dirt nap- if the Good Lord iswilling.

I know this is a big buck contest, but I'd rahter seepictures of happy hunters. If what they shot makes them smile- more power to them.
We're only here for a little while, you never know what tomorrow may bring.

Anyone set a personal goals on their buck harvest?

RE: 31-Team Drop Tine Bombers

10 stands to hang Mike? We only have a few weeks before the season!![8D]

The unofficial word that I have heard is that in MA you need to clear out any "bait" 2 weeks before the season. I have never seen that in writing but the NBEF course instructors backed up that info.

I have two stands set so far with one more site picked out and two more to go. The main property Im hunting is new to me and has about 4 or 5 other hunters on it but they all "seem" to be setting up right on the field edges while I like to be back in the timber more.

I dont know if Ill be holding out for a true PB, but I think Ive decided to try to let anything smaller than a "good" six walk and focus on taking a fat doe or two (which the landowner would really appreciate anyhow). As it is, if the does are there, the bucks will be soon too!

I just got me an itchy trigger finger though. I don't know what will happen if a forky or a little basket six shows up. Im getting the shakes already!

Dubbya 09-20-2006 04:36 PM

RE: 31-Team Drop Tine Bombers

Well, I've got 11 tags to fill (Texas and Oklahoma)in all 5 or 6 of which can be bucks. Like Dave it depends on where I'm hunting. If I'm in NW Oklahoma, I'm holding out for a monster, if I'm in SE Oklahoma my standards decrease a little bit. If I'm at my buddy's place in East Texas, it's pretty much game on, but I won't shoot a little guy on his place. If I'm in West Texas, it's whatever my friend who own's the ranch wants me to shoot. Oh man, talking about this is getting me all worked out.

DaveC 09-20-2006 04:37 PM

RE: 31-Team Drop Tine Bombers

A six is something I've never shot. Passed a few, but a BIG&WIDEsix is something I've always wanted to get a shot at. They aren't common, but they are out there. Either what would be an 8 with no brows or a true six lacking G'3 & beyond.

Hmm, if he's a true 6 with brow tines, do the mian beams become his G3's?

well I think I'll hold out for the big-un we got running around our place,,If my buddy gets him I'll go for a eight pointer he's around 120. The big-un we are guessing at 140 to 150in. other than that I'll be looking too take a doe or two,,

Figure I'll post pics of my food plot for you guys...one is from 3 weeks ago...the other is from last weekend.

RE: 31-Team Drop Tine Bombers

Fromman, sweet plot, what did you plant?
Where is the water supply coming from?

DWD2001, we posted at the same time yesterday and since we now have the same avatarI didn't even catch it or read your post.
Sounds like you will have plenty of places to hunt this year- all with great potential.
Where at in East Texas & where at in West Texas are you hunting?

East Texas can produce nice bucksif they get some age to them.
West Texas all depends on what part of West Texas (the phrase covers anything west of San Antonio for the most part:D that's half of the state!)

My new west Texas lease isbetween Del Rio & Rocksprings (Carta valley)- 45 minute drive to either (no gas stations or any type of store any closer)

Okie, although the 120 would make me smile a 140-150 would probably make me drop my bow ! Good luck on which ever you ventilate.

Okie, I'd definitely love for you to score on the big boy, that would be sweetness.

Fro, it looks as if the food plot fro will turn out alright after all. Also where is the water that gonna go through that hose coming from? I like the looks of your setup.

Dave, the place that I hunt in East Texas is near Gilmer sort of by Paris. I've never seen an monsters out there but a couple 100" deer, lots of yotes though. On the Western front my really good friend has a place on the Brazos River near Graham, TX. It's one of the sweetest 640 acres I have ever seen. The property is a Peninsula that is bordered on 3 sides by the river. In the middle they have a couple hundred acres planted in crop fields. The fields are bordered by about 75-100 yards of Mesquite Flats, and that is bordered by 100+ yards of Tall tall trees to the river bottom. Let me see if I can find a few pictures, I'll try to post them.

I'm truly having trouble sleep at night. I'm going to the lake this weekend where my buddy has a bunch of land that is surrounded by Corp land. Some great deer, but I'm out for backstraps next weekend.

Here is a sunset from the upper part of the property

Here is the river this summer when the sandies were running

The water supply is actually running through half inch pvc pipe off of the back of my house...we have about 350 feet of it running through our woods...lol.

We have winter wheat and oats planted...also some Imperial Sample pack stuff. Hopefully it'll pick back up and turn out good.

DaveC 09-21-2006 11:07 PM

RE: 31-Team Drop Tine Bombers

Dwd2001, that sure is some sweet looking/sounding land!

I bought my boat near Paris Tx and the land there looked deery as well. Looks like you have some great memories in the making this year.

Froman, a walk from back door to deer stand- every bow hunters dream.

I have some good deer (dareI say big bucks) that live ~200 yards behind my house (another street over & then woods) but the land is posted, so I drive across the state to hunt smaller deer:D.

Now let me see what I can do with that avatar.
