This AM I went out to my lease to check out a spot I've been thinking about trying. I sat down at dawn behind a large oak with a trunk about 4' wide. This tree is about 10yds. off of a game trail leading to a pasture. At the base of the tree on one side is a tangle of brambles, vines, and an old barbed wire fence. On the other side is a nice clear shooting lane to the trail. I sat there for about an hour and a half when a nice 8pt. came strolling out of the pasture headed for the woods. If it was Oct. 1st he was mine. I don't think he ever knew I was there. He walked past in no hurry and I stayed put for another 1/2 hour before I got up and left. I plan on hunting that spot on the opener if the wind is right. What should I do to stop him to get a shot? Should I try a grunt or a scent bomb across the trail from the tree? I'm not used to getting this close and I don't want to blow it if I get a chance. Help me help us!

Well keep in mind that any attempts at stopping him for a shot could possibly cause him to bolt. But it is better to risk him bolting than to shoot at a moving deer and make a poor hit. If it were me I might try a light oral urp as my first option. But if he is only ten yards out it is a bit risky. Make sure your at full draw before urping and he is where you can shoot. Now scent bomb could cause him to alter his course after smelling it down wind and make hime circle around or such. If you could place it in a place that put him down wind as he steps into the shooting land that would be ideal. Are you planning on putting a stand up or a ground blind? By the way how is that new bow shooting? dabow

txrookie I second everything dabowhunter said in his post. Although at 10 yards if the deer was walking I myself would not even try to stop him. I would just aim a few inches ahead of where I want to hit him. Basically just do what ever you think you need to do to get a good shot off. Just make sure you can get the bow pulled back without him seeing you. I usally pull mine back when they are behind a tree, head turned away, and if you are in a tree stand while there head is down feeding. My season starts in minnesota this Saturday Sept. 17th. Going to be a long week of waiting for me. Hopefully it cools down here before then. Talk to you guys later.
