Yep, its the lube- it smokes a lot, it splatters, it gets all over, but it doesn't hurt anything. In fact, if your lube is working correctly, you should have a star shaped lube splatter on the muzzle.

I just shoot the barrel full of foaming bore cleaner, walk away for a 1/2 hour, then run a few patches through. The stuff usually removes or at least loosens the gunk...

I agree. If you need something better than a Lee to do more volume, get a Gracey or Giraud trimmer set up. These are both better than the Lee, the rest of them, not so much.
