Stick a bore light in the chamber and look down the barrel. MicroGrove (it's trademarked) or multigroove rifleing will have a bunch of grooves and lands (I think 12, but not sure), rather than the usual four or five for cut or button rilfeing..

No, this will not hurt the barrel, but I would not do it if the barrel is heavily leaded! One trick I use with plain-base cast bullets loaded to 2200 FPS in my .45/70 is to place an INVERTED gas-check over the powder to protect the bullet base. This works in a Ruger No. 1 in .45/70 caliber.
