No, this will not hurt the barrel, but I would
not do it if the barrel is heavily leaded! One trick I use with plain-base cast bullets loaded to 2200 FPS in my .45/70 is to place an INVERTED gas-check over the powder to protect the bullet base. This works in a Ruger No. 1 in .45/70 caliber.
