260 remington ackley improved?
a friend of mine suggested i do a reamer job on my 260 remington and turn it into a 260 ackley improved. sounds like a good idea to me. they do a reamer job on the chamber and refit the barrel. i would have to fireform the new cases from normal 260 cases and reload for the 260 AI. they have a 40 degree shoulder then and are basicaly straight cases. the 260 AI should get me about 100-150 fps more. anyone have reloading date for a 260 ackley improved? what are your thoughts on this?

My thoughts on it are, if it ain't broke don't fix it. If it is shooting good now and you like the rifle, why whould you chance changing it? If you want 100-150 fps more, get a 6.5-06. I just fail to see the advantage for a 260 AI. Just more hassle to load.

interesting
i did a search on the internet but unfortunatly i was unable to find any data on the 260 AI. i'd like to see a comparison between handloaded 260 remington 120, 130 and 140gr bullets vs handloaded 260 AI in the same weights. i'm curious as to how much faster it actually is.
cheers

how does the 260rem shoot? what size bullets? how much is a box? i would take the 260rem over the 7mm-08rem but unfortunatly browning does not chamber that round.

RE: 260 remington ackley improved?
hey quilly,
i so far have only tried 2 factory loads. the 140gr remington corlokts and the 140gr federal gamekings. they both shoot 1/2 inch at 100m if i let the barrel cool for a couple mins between shots. a box of shells is 27 bux canadian (bout the same as for my 7mm rem mag). i want to eventually get into reloading (hope santas listening) and use 120 and 130gr barnes x bullets in my 260. i've been hunting hard for 5 days since season started but i havn't had a good shot at a nice buck yet. when i bag a buck i'll let you know how the 140gr corlokts or the gamekings (whatever i have in my pocket at the time) worked on a deer.
does your gun have to be a browning? take a good look at the 700 mountain rifle and play with one for a bit in a gun shop . it's a light compact gun with a stock that feels awesome and it shoots good to boot.
cheers

In P. O. Ackley's manuals he does not recommend going over 5% more than the max load for a non-improved cartridge.
I have two, 25-06 imp. and 30-30 imp.
They are not any harder to load if you buy the dies for the improved cartridge.
In my experiance you need to keep the chamber on the tight side of spec.
If you want to have fun, go for it. It's no differant than people hot rodding cars. But in reality there are other cartridges that will do the same thing as a 260 imp.

I've got quite a bit of experience with 6.5mm's, and the Ackley Improved just won't give you much in terms of a performance gain on game animals vs. the .260 Rem.
For shooting deer, antelope and the like, the .260 Rem is as close to perfect as a cartridge can be.
Now the 6.5/06, and especially the 6.5/.284 are real improvements, and there is plenty of loading data available for both.
Just as an aside, the 6.5mm/.284 is one of the most accurate cartridges around. And it absolutely hammers game up to and including elk at ridiculous ranges. I would lean this way in a short-action, 6.5mm wildcat.

Prairie Boy
A friend of mine AI'ed his 7mm-08 a couple of years back,he loves it,he recons he's getting near 7mm rem mag performance with the 130 grain & 140 grain projectiles with his handloades without as much recoil.I find that a bit difficult to believe without seeing his velocities on a chrono but he is extremly happy with it.
I dont think there would be too many 260 ackley improved rifles around but I think it would be a good way to improve performance for you if your going to reload, would be a waste if your just going to use factory ammo.
If you decide to get it done, make sure the person doing the job knows what he is doing & has done it many times before.
Good luck whatever you do

prairie boy...
well i have enough bolt actions right now. i want a gun that i can use with iron sights. for stalking up in maine. as for brownings. i love mine and i would have to say i might not ever turn back that way of cheap white metal trigger assemblies and those pesky trigger locks they have on them.
i did look at the 700 mountain in 280rem one year but i have heard about the barrel heating too quickly.maybe if i got one i would change out the barrel like you where thinking but just get it fluted. and have iron sights put on it.
but for now i am going for a browning BLR in the big brother of the 260rem, the 7mm-08rem.i did see a box of ammo. those rounds look like pencils. i did miss a used browning stainless stalker in 260rem. should of bought it but i did not have the money or the room in my gun safe.
but let me know how she does on deer. i might actually hold off till i find another used browning in 260rem.
