Double Lung.

A head shot is just about the worse possible shot. Don' t ever aim for the head. Don' t make a rookie mistake. :)

ok its your call but i still go for the head[:-]:D:)[8D]

the head is a good kill shot. but i like the lung heart shot. i never take a head shot on a buck though

Lung/Heart shot is the best kill shot to me!!

RE: best kill shot

I also go for the lung/heart. If the deer is facing me I wait until it turns to one side before I take a shot. I don' t like shooting them in the chest because it usually doesn' t exit the body.

Head shots?! I don' t think so. It' s a smaller target to hit, and I have no desire to be anywhere near a deer that I' ve just blown the head off of.

Red Hawk 06-15-2003 11:11 AM

RE: best kill shot

Heart and lung shot. First deer i shot i was aiming for the chest area but the buck moved at the last second and shot it in the head.. but as i said, i' d say heart/lung would be best. As other people mention a headshot is harder and the chance of messed up the antlers and such is greater. On my hunting game (Cabelas Big Game Hunter for the PS2) you can make head shot because it doesn' t ruin it lol. (I use bows, my dad uses 300. Mag.)

heart/lung- headshot is just irresponsible

Head shot makes a little too much of a mess but it knocks them dead![X(] I would rather go for a heart/lung shot.

RE: best kill shot

Heart/lung shot. Ill take a head shot on a turkey, but even then its questionable. I really wouldnt recomend taking a head shot. But, im talking about bow shots. Rifle is different, but bow i take only chest shots. Does with a rifle ill shoot in the head though if there close enough and everything is right.

RE: best kill shot

The way it was explained to me when I was first starting out (6 years ago) was, behind the front shoulder you have a paper plate sized area where all the Vital Organs for a deer are. If you aim just behind the shoulder you are apt to get a double lung, a heart shot, or both in the same shot. Every deer Ive taken Ive shot behind the shoulder and each and every deer has dropped on the spot, Ive never had to track a single deer. If you try to shoot a buck in the head, your liable to mess up the " Rack" or ruin any chance of mounting the Trophy. So, personally I aim just behind the front shoulder :D

little gobbler 07-07-2003 08:50 AM

RE: best kill shot

If you hit in the right spot you can hit both lungs and the aorta the biggest artery coming out of the heart this is the best shot. Being a bow hunter a shot to the head is irresponsible and just stupid unless you got a high poundage hard shooting bow you will just wound the deer. a guy that hunts with a buddy of mine took a shot that hit a twig and diflected into the head after trailing the deer for about 200 yards with little blood he found it still alive wandering around blind it was hit in the eye and some how went blind in the other luckly he was able to put another arrow into the lungs and put it out of its suffering.

Never once did he mention whether or not he was hunting with a Bow, Shotgun, or Rifle. You all assumed because you hunt with a bow, that he does too. Im assuming here that he doesnt because everyone knows that taking a head shot with a bow would more than likely wound the deer. So please, lets not call names huh? :D

To me a head shot isn' t the best.I would have to go with a double lung
shot.It does the job and puts it down.

RE: best kill shot

with a bow u have to go for the heart/lungs but with a gun it all depends on what youre shooting at if its a buck never shoot it in the head cuz you can mess up the rack or mess up a mount if ur gettin it mounted. Now Does one the other hand id rather put one in the head with a gun so that way no meat is ruined and if u miss its not that big of a deal because Does are soo plentiful

RE: best kill shot

I would say the lungs or the heart. I would use the head shot to finish off the animal. With a bow the only shot is in the lungs.

bigbulls 08-20-2003 10:55 PM

RE: best kill shot

I' m not trying to be rude here but the head is the worst possible place to TRY to kill a deer. Have you ever watched a deer for any length of time? How often does it move it' s head up and down and side to side? I' ll tell you. A LOT.

Have you ever seen a deer with the end of it' s nose or bottom jaw blown off because someone was trying to shoot it in the head and it looked the other way just as the person squeezed the trigger. Not very pretty to say the least.

In a hunting situation a " hunter" should never try to shoot a deer in the head. There is way too much that can go wrong. The deer will eventually die if you hit it in the face. But, it will be a slow and agonizing death from starvation or infection. An animal that is shot through the lungs will die within seconds. A deer that is shot in the face will die over days or weeks.

The target size is also much bigger for a lung shot. On a deer the lung area is about 9 to 11 inches and relatively still. The brain is about the size of a baseball and is constantly moving. Could you hit a baseball every time as it was bouncing around on a bungee cord? I highly doubt it.

We get enough of a bad name as it is with all of the anti hunters out there. We don' t need to make it worse for ourselves by trying to take a very risky shot and wounding an animnal. You can bet that it will die so an anti hunter will see it, or worse, someone that wasn' t anti hunting until they saw the deer with it' s jaw blown off and that' s another one that we turned against us.

Be responsible, take the beast shot possible. 99.99999% of the time it is the lung area.

Highcountry13, I don' t know how old you are, I assume 13 years, but if you are old enough to be out there hunting and taking an animals life to feed yourself then you should have a much better respect for the animals that you hunt. Mentality and comments like that have no place in the deer woods. Doe or not, it makes no differance. A good clean kill should be the only thing on your mind when you have the cross hairs on the animal.

Sorry about the lecture guys, but it needed to be done.

OlMossyHorns 08-21-2003 12:42 PM

RE: best kill shot

I agree with bigbulls 100%. A head shot gives terrible odds, not to mention being an unethical shot. If you miss the tiniest bit you could blow off a bottom jaw or any number of things. How can a deer survive like that, it can' t. No matter if you are shooting with a bow or a gun, never aim for the head, it is too risky. Young hunters, listen to bigbulls and not highcountry, that is not the right way to hunt.....that is shooting or killing, not hunting.

RE: best kill shot

When I hunt I don' t want a DECENT kill, I want to make a shot where I know the deer will be going down quickly and painlessly. A head shot it very irresponsible, no matter what weapon you are using. If you think the head is a good place to aim then somebody needs to teach you a lesson.
The very first deer I shot at was a doe. First day of shotgun season. She came running right in front of me and at about 10 yards my dad stopped her with a grunt. I don' t know what happened, if I rushed the shot or pulled it or what but I was aiming for the heart and lungs and hit the doe in the nose. Believe me it was the worst thing I have ever seen. To see that doe suffer in the way that it those few seconds before I got another shot in her was enough to devaste me. Even as I type this it brings a tear to my eyes because of the pain that was going through that doe. Oh but it doesn' t matter because it was just a doe and their are plenty of them <- saying that very sarcastically.
You boys can aim for the head all you want but I will aim for the heart and lungs.

RE: best kill shot

lungs and heart are great shots if broadside. ummm last fall shot an elk with my 7mm butsted both shoulders and put him down fast. shot a moose 3 years ago in the hump on top of the shoulder and that put him down like a bag of dirt heard of numerous people having that same success. my favorite shot though is when a deer is looking right at me facing my and you pick that little white patch on their neck and put a bullet through it seems to work well but you have to be a good shot. when its all said and done though heart and lungs are the easiest to hit and will always do the job.

personaly i dont know why you would shoot a deer in the head, it is the smallest part. for me its right in the bread basket(dubble lung area/heart). Head shots make us hunters look like savages to because the deer looks like crap. those are just my personal beliefs though

Heart lungs all the way quick, easy, painless, not gross, no chance of miss and running off, bigger target, not chance of messing up possible mount skin, no chance of messing up antlers. Now if were talking about hogs or pigs .22 right in the eye seems to work for me, snake samuria sword(lol) or a machete, bobcat or mountainlion same as deer lungs heart

RE: best kill shot

Good post bigbulls. NEVER aim for the head. If you want the deer to fall right there, shoot it in the shoulder (for the gun hunters out there) and right behind the shoulder (if you dont wana mess up meat or if you' re bowhunting) A deer won' t run far if shot in the lungs. I havent seen a deer run past 75 yards from being shot in the lungs, with a bullet or an arrow. Keep this in mind, and never aim for the head.

When you took your hunter safety course didn' t they teach you where to aim for a quick humane kill? It wasn' t the head you can be sure of that. The lungs and heart should be where everyone aims. If not your doing it wrong and thats not up to debate.[:@] Where do you fit in?

Timba!! You should never suggest that anyone shoot a deer in the shoulder! Even if they dont care about the meat you should always aim right behind the shoulder.

Not sure if replied to this one or not just in case i' ll respond anyway. Regardless of with bow or gun, I wouldnt aim for the head on a big game animal because say if you miss slightly and shoot it in the mouth for example. It just suffer and eventually die a slow death. As for heart/lung shots is a definetly something i would aim for literally.

You' re still very, very wrong. You can not shoot for a deer' s head and ' respect the game.'

RE: best kill shot

To be exact (w/ gun) i shoot at about 6 inches below the back. i call the the shock zone. it seems to hit them and they are dead and just keep on truckin
expect a 25-50 yd trail.

kenneyhunt 10-31-2003 09:17 PM

RE: best kill shot

i dont see why not FL/GA HUNTER if i can hit it in the head and bring it down strait away then i belive i would be respecting the game. think about it if i shot you in the head with a 308 you would be gone much faster than if i shot you in the heart, and you wouldnt feel much if i shot you in the head, quite simply because you wouldnt have a head.lets see if you feel that you would miss a deers head then that is quite simply your shooting. and i diddnt ask wether or not i was making a bad mistake where i shoot them i was asking where you shoot them so shut up until you have read it properly. OK SIR [>:][X(]
