What caliber rifle do you all think is the best
What caliber rifle do you all think is the best? How about the worse? I think a 7mm is the best all around rifle. The ballistics are great. For elk it is good but it wouldnt hurt to use a 300wby. I totally hate the 30-06. Nothing against those who shoot it. Ballistics are bad.

How can you say that the ballistics on the 30-06 are bad? It pushes 150 grain hunting bullets at nearly 3,000 fps. How could that be bad? If you think that the 30-06 is bad, you must hate the 308. The 308 is ballistically worse than the 06, but it has taken thousands and thousands of game animals every year since its invention. I think you could get away with saying that the 30-30 had bad ballistics, but the 30-06 is one of the MOST successful rifle cartridges of all time.

I don't think there's one caliber that's best for everything, not even one that's best for certain type of animal. The perfect deer rifle where I hunt is a totally different gun that what someone else living out west would call "perfect". The first rifle I bought was a .30-06 because it's a decent all-around cartridge, although I admit it might not be "perfect" for anything.

For me the best rifle is something along the lines of a .22-250 or .204 ruger. The only thing I can shoot here with a rifle is coyotes. So until I'm older out of college and have a job that lets me go on bigger hunts for things like elk that the biggest rifle I need.

I would say for best all around U.S.A. gun, considering the different types of game animals out there, my vote goes for the 30-06. Its perfect for any deer, yet big enough for elk and moose(even though people mostly use bigger guns for them). Ballistics are great, plenty of knock down within a decent range for the bigger of the species that roam around here.

I shoot a 30-06 and i have to say that im very pleased with it. That gun has taken deer cleanly out to 200yards. I've also heard that you can load it up with smaller grain cartidges and go for fox or racoons, or load it higher and go for moose, elk, etc... So i'd have to say the 30-06.

I shoot a Remington 700 ADL .308, with a Leupold V2 3x9x50 and its my favorite gun for eveything. ITs great for dear it is ballistically almost exactly the same as a 30-06 out to 300 yards. in my opinion you cant go wrong with an 06 or a .308.

I figure this is going to turn into a big argument, but I love my handy .243, gets the job done on the smaller Texas deer we got, as most dont go over 100 or 120 dressed
