You need to find out from your local agricultural office what the date of the last frost is. If you're a gambler you plant just after because corn doesn't like cold soil. It's safer to plant a few weeks after if you're soil moisture is adequite. If you have heavy clay you try to find a time after the last frost that you don't bury the tractor.

The high performance hybrids farmers normally use have tall spindley stalks that won't stay standing late into hunting season like what you're looking for.
